Vepariga
Found this bit of news extremely exciting, well for me it was lol. Love Appleseed and seeing a 13 part series come later this year will be great. 'Jinni's Animation Studios and Production I.G's upcoming Appleseed XIII future paramilitary anime series on Tuesday at Tokyo's TIFFCOM industry event,This latest adaptation of Masamune Shirow's Appleseed manga will be composed of 13 22-minute direct-to-video anime episodes, plus two feature-length compilation films of the episodes. taksraven
Ugh. The character design in that poster is *ugly* though. Looks more like a bad comic book or computer game.
valkyriechild
Actually that design looks similar to the original manga, compared to the CG design from the 2 previous movies. Not expecting much, but still looking forward to it.

Knight26
Interesting, if it is of the same calibur as Stand Alone Complex it should be fun to watch. WIll like to see how close they stick to the manga too.

aerocombatpilot
Ugh. The character design in that poster is *ugly* though. Looks more like a bad comic book or computer game. I thought that Haruhiko Mikimoto was going to do the character designs for this series?
EXO
I thought that Haruhiko Mikimoto was going to do the character designs for this series? that project fell apart a while back... that was a heartbreak. But yeah the suit design looks like OG manga. The character design... hopefully it's just the angle but it looks like bad deviant art material. BUT sticking close to the manga is awesome news so I'm looking forward to hearing more.
EXO
Conspiracy, terrorism, deadly military weapons technology, greedy corporations, and power-hungry politicians — these are just some of the threats that Deunan and Briareos must contend with as they fight to protect Olympus and save mankind from plunging into another war. I hope it's really that, like the manga and less pondering of man's existence in a world where technology may be the world's only hope for Utopia... or some GITS movie or Eva BS. At least Oshii or John Woo are not involved so far. I still think the Black Magic short film is the best Shirow animated adaptation to date. Clean, simple and exciting as derived it may be. the white drew carey
I am reservedly optimistic. While I enjoyed the first CG film for what it was, I am hoping that they ain't lying when they say it hews closely to the manga. I like Appleseed a lot more than GITS... I just wish Shirow would get back to it.

jenius
That looks like a cool video game or a crappy cartoon.
Beltane70
I'm rather disappointed with how that looks. It's a shame that the version of Appleseed that Mikimoto was supposed to work never got to see the light of day.
sketchley
Hopefully those are just pre-release, unpolished animation, and that the finished product is going to be slightly better rendered. Other than that, it looks pretty cool, appears to capture the energy of the manga, and has character and mechanical designs that are consistent with the CG movie animation. EXO
Yeah the CG looks horrendous. But the mechanical and the cityscape are taken right out of the manga. I wish they would have gone with traditional animation with the characters. Hopefully it gets better.
PetarB
It does look a bit rough, but I will still try and see it. Big Appleseed fan here!
macrossnake
Overall the CG is weak (especailly the character face modelling and animation)... hope the story is good.
Robelwell202
Hmmm... As far as the animation goes, that looks to be on par with the POS Dominion - Tank Police CGI show that was produced a while back. And by that comparison, I mean to say, it isn't at all what I'd expect it to be. The trailer leaves a lot to be desired.
Nightdare
Hmm, if I wanted a good story I'd wait till Shirow returns from his porncalenders and continues his epic mangas (fat chance) IMO this looks worse than the Dominion CGI
sketchley
Hmm, if I wanted a good story I'd wait till Shirow returns from his porncalenders and continues his epic mangas (fat chance) Interesting that you should say this. The last two times I've gone to the local Animate, he's had a new publication on the shelves. Pieces 4 Hellhound 01; 2010.12.06 Koukaku Kidoutai 2: Man Machine Interface Bilingual Edition: 2011.03.29 (I really don't get this publishing date, especially because there was a sticker on the book saying "new! 2011.02.08"!!!) The former may or may not have had the artwork touched up (stress on the may). So far, the artwork in the later looks like it's the same as that in Koukaku Kidoutai 2: Manmachine Interface; 2001.06.28; albeit with the artwork shrunk 10 to 15% to get more room in the margins for the bilingual text. Nevertheless, it's intriguing that there's a new publication of his work roughly every 3 months. (I can't be bothered to look at the publication dates of the other art collections and whatnot published over the preceding 2 or 3 years. Especially because I missed Pieces 2 & 3. ! Just trust me that I've got a bookshelf with a steadily growing selection of his new publications.) Found the info motherload: http://www.shirowledge.com/index.html#comic (scroll down to 2010/2011 releases. Apparently I completely missed Pieces 5, too! ) Edited March 13, 2011 by sketchley
sketchley
Before I forget, motherload Shirow website has a news article with screen caps to Appleseed XIII: http://shirowledge.sblo.jp/ As well as the production's homepage: http://appleseed13.jp/ Edit: Playing around with the homepage, and the background image of each of the categories changes. There are a quite a number of images that are quite faithful to the manga. I think I'm starting to like the finishing render of the mecha - as it's very manga-esque in some instances. If I'm reading it correctly, it's going to be releasing in 3 mediums (simultaneously?): Blue-ray, Net Distribution, and theatrically. So far it's slated to play only in 3 theatres (Shinjuku Pikaderii (Tokyo), Namba Parks Cinema (Osaka), and Nagoya Midland Square Cinema (Nagoya).) There's also a blog: http://ameblo.jp/appleseed13/ Edited March 13, 2011 by sketchley
electric indigo
The background images and the mechanical designs have a nice old school feeling to them and work well with the images from the manga, but considering the staff lineup, the character renderings are a major disappointment. And I never considered Shirow as someone who could deliver a good, consistent plot, even at his Appleseed times. Reading the comics was always more a kinetic "enjoy the ride" experience. PetarB
I just read the original comics for the pics... the stories were certainly not the stars. Black Magic was barely coherent.
Gui
True, but Black Magic was his very first comic, so... My favorite from Shirow has always been Appleseed, and even if it was very action-oriented it was still an interesting universe with rather well drafted characters and enjoyable plots. As for this adaptation... Well, my expectations aren't high, especially since the latest pair of theatrical movies, but I'll still give a serious try to it, just in case... JELEINEN
I just read the original comics for the pics... the stories were certainly not the stars. Black Magic was barely coherent. Coherency isn't one of Shiro's strong points.
EXO
The Appleseed stories were straight up action and were really good. Dominion, Orion and GITS were your typical pretentious existential BS that the anime industry were starting to lean towards at that time... gave way to Evangelion. Gui
Not so much for GitS actually, at least in the manga version because Oshii's interpretation was an entirely different thing in fact: I have an interview of Shirow in the french edition of Black Magic where he said he was working on GitS and he described it as one of these TV series-like cop stories whose purpose was to entertain the audience; to be the most honnest possible, I seriously think he put far more thoughts into Appleseed than into GitS...
