Anyhow, can anyone name that tune? The track is "Nostalgia". It's #30 on Disc-1 of the soundtrack CD set Macross the Complete. Quote
Master Dex Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 (edited) That probably isn't the entire OST, which is quite larger than 38 minutes going by what I have in my library (it is a 3 disc set, though at least one disc is entirely DYRL). A lot of songs have repeating motifs in them but that just sounds like the classic Dogfight track to me. Edit: Guess I was wrong, but like said, a lot of recurring musical motifs, heh. Wolf-1 Posted July 28, 2018 Posted July 28, 2018 Was the death of Fokker's childhood love interest in Zero, the underlying factor in him coming back and trying to really court Claudia, the gifts, and eventual late night phone call? If memory serves, Fokker and Claudia met while the war was still raging and Fokker hadn't quite yet started the experimental fighter projects, which is where he first attempts the "Three's a crowd" date. You mean Dr. Aries Turner? She wasn't so much a "childhood love interest" as an old girlfriend from Roy's time as an archaeology major before he joined the UN Forces. The events Claudia describes in her flashback in Super Dimension Fortress Macross Ep.33 occur around February 2007, between the establishment of the training center on South Ataria island in January and the start of flight testing on the VF-X1 the following month. The events of the Macross Zero OVA occur in July 2008, almost a year and a half later. 3 hours ago, Wolf-1 said: If memory serves, Fokker and Claudia met while the war was still raging and Fokker hadn't quite yet started the experimental fighter projects, which is where he first attempts the "Three's a crowd" date. The actual fighting didn't come to an end until almost two years later, after the fallout of the Mayan island incident in Macross Zero caused the Alliance and its organized resistance to UN Gov't control to collapse and left the UN Forces free to mop up the remaining regional conflicts by the end of 2008. That is, I believe, from Macross Graffiti... so it's official art. There have been a couple different dates given for Hikaru and Misa's wedding, IIRC. Two of the four I'm aware of were October 10th (of 2011 or 2012), the others were in June of either 2012 or 2013. Quote

Now if Misa were really vindictive, I could see her requisitioning some giant tin cans for the back of the Megaroad-01 and putting Minmay IN one after telling her she could absolutely take part in the wedding. David Hingtgen Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 Of the zillion box sets out there, what does this one have inside: It’s an old ADV releas, so that’s a good sign IIRC. But if I were to buy it and select Japanese with subs (of course) is it just “Robotech with dubtitles” or is it actually a decent proper release of SDF:M? Quote

That box set contains nothing apart from disappointment and a grainy, washed-out, poor quality transfer of Robotech's "Macross Saga" in English. There is no "Japanese with subtitles" option. To add insult to injury, it's the broadcast cut... so it's censored. It has the R-word on the cover, so you know it's not worth buying. DO NOT pay money for this. Don't accept it for free. Don't steal it. It's like a dybbuk, if you let it into your home it will bring you nothing but grief. Its only practical use is for leveling a table with a particularly short leg, and it's not even very good at that. None of the ADV Films Robotech releases had Japanese audio. They were strictly Robotech. The original shows were released separately under their original titles, and of those only Macross had an English audio option... a gag dub-level nightmare that is downright cringeworthy except for the fact that they got Mari Iijima to to reprise the role of Minmay in English. David Hingtgen Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 That would explain why it’s so cheap. Thought I might have lucked out and found something good for cheap. Quote

Flight testing on the non-transformable VF-X and transformation-capable VF-X1 prototypes in 2007 was carried out at the UN Forces airbase on South Ataria island. I don't recall, offhand, if any source has said where the prototypes were built. Quote

They're on South Ataria island, at the airbase adjacent to the training center the UN Forces set up there to train the crew of the SDF-1 Macross in January 2007. The whole flashback involves Roy and Claudia meeting there after she's assigned to the new training center. The island is only called "Macross island" in that other show we don't talk about here. Bolt Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Ok I've looked in this topic a bit and I can't surf all 119 pages..I've also searched several key words and topics.. Just how were the AI enties from Galaxy fleet able to get so powerful ? And how was it they were even created? After the events of Macross Plus, I would have imagined the "powers that be" would have many measures in place to prevent such a thing.. just point me in the right direction if you don't have the patients to go over this (again?) i went down the Macross compendium worm hole but there didn't seem to be enough info. Or I wasn't looking in the right place.. And maybe it's time to do a rewatch of Frontier. Although that particular plot point doesn't seem to REALLY come to light until much later in the series.. Thanks for any info.. Quote

Thanks for any info.. Well the important point here is, Galaxy's leaders were not AI, they were cybernetically augmented humans that has almost entirely stripped away their humanity. Most of Galaxy's citizens were like this (Sheryl was an exception), to the point where the corporate government has mindslaved all of them because of those implants and augmentations. As for AIs in general, the UNG/NUNG did put severe restrictions on AI after the Sharon Apple incident indeed... though Sharon herself was an illegally augmented AI to begin with using the Ghost's bio-neural chip. They put limiters on all Ghost drones hence forth.... though these limiters apparently could be removed as Luca does in the final battle against Galaxy, at least briefly. Galaxy did also have Ghost fighters but it is likely those AI were as much slaves to the leaders of the fleet as the people were. Quote
Bolt Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Thanks for the clarification. Meanwhile Galaxy Fleet is still out there somewhere supposedly ...running rogue? i recall those disembodied voices plotting while we just see the vastnes of space, it really came across as otherworldly entities. Hence my thoughts turned to AI.. And grace seemed purely robotic in the end and not just an enhanced human.. Quote
Master Dex Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 The line was very blurred, it is likely most of them only have a human brain left and the rest is a biosynthetic form. As for who's left, it depends on show vs movies. In the movies the entire Galaxy leadership is killed but in the show it's just Grace (though she may have had all of Galaxy's leaders in her head too.. it's unclear) but the main island of Galaxy did apparently escape or was never found. In the movies we see most of the Galaxy leadership is literally in these pods keeping what's left of their bodies alive while they operate the ship as a collective entity with their minds, it's possible most of them can't live as normal humans anymore. There is also that business where Manfred Brando is part of the whole thing, or what's left of him but I'm not as versed in that subject. Quote
Sanity is Optional Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Not sure if this is the correct question thread, but anyway. Does anyone know which editions of Frontier and the Frontier movies have English subtitles included? Quote
Master Dex Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Good a thread as any. I know the Blu-rays of the Frontier movies have official English subs, though I don't own them so I couldn't direct you to the correct purchase page, which I don't know if we can do anyway here. The series as far as I know has no official English subs. For English subs of the Frontier series it's all fansubs. Delta was the first series to get a release with official English subtitles. Quote

You may be overstating it a bit. The Galaxy Executives and the Macross Galaxy Corporate Army's cyber-soldiers were cyborgs with almost totally artificial bodies, but the available information points to the adoption level of implant tech being pretty low among the fleet's civilian population (mostly just network-enabling their brains). Curiously, this is hinted to be something of a cruel mercy, due to the Macross Galaxy fleet being a rather unpleasant place to live and that being trapped in an illusory paradise is preferable to its real nature. 2 hours ago, Master Dex said: As for AIs in general, the UNG/NUNG did put severe restrictions on AI after the Sharon Apple incident indeed... though Sharon herself was an illegally augmented AI to begin with using the Ghost's bio-neural chip. Galaxy did also have Ghost fighters but it is likely those AI were as much slaves to the leaders of the fleet as the people were. Sort of. A big part of the problem with the Ghost X-9 was that its AI core was built around technology from Sharon Apple's system, and that technology proved to be pretty unstable even before it was "completed" with a bio-neural processor. It was able to behave like a real human brain because that's what the system was set up to emulate. Later iterations of the design rolled the AI tech back to a more traditional hardware that wasn't capable of fuzzy logic or unpredictable behavior and curtailed the AI's autonomous air combat program. Even though Luca's Ghosts were running the same basic software, they weren't capable of the unpredictable AI behavior of the prototype. Galaxy's AIF-9V Ghosts were almost certainly running under the same conditions. The novelization of Frontier does, IIRC, make mention of true AIs (one of which is implied to be built on the digitized personalty of Manfred Brando), and those AIs do serve the Galaxy Executives. 1 hour ago, Bolt said: Meanwhile Galaxy Fleet is still out there somewhere supposedly ...running rogue? i recall those disembodied voices plotting while we just see the vastnes of space, it really came across as otherworldly entities. As far as we know, yeah... they lost Battle Galaxy and a bunch of escorts but the main fleet is still out there somewhere. Mind you, theres no hard guarantee that all or even most of the Galaxy executives were on Battle Galaxy or Mainland... being the fold network cyborgs they are, they did a lot of their conferring over zero time fold communications links. They could be pretty much anywhere in the galaxy. Galaxy's bigshots have gone full Ghost in the Shell, being brains in artificial bodies. Grace is no exception, and most of what we see of her is apparently bodies that she is operating remotely over a zero time fold communications link. (Cybernetics don't seem to be quite advanced enough to permit straight-up body surfing yet.) Quote
