Really happy to see so many solid recommendations on this one.  Was not expecting much, but seems to be a genuine love letter to the original.

Don't know when I'll get to see it, but hopefully not too long.

In any way that counts in regard to military discipline, no Top Gun was not realistic.  Not even close.  So no need to even speculate on "why" in regards to why Maverick is still around.  More so for a guy who had never actually been in combat BEFORE the movie.  (since actually having flown a combat mission cuts you "some" slack - but even there not a lot).

I didn't really care for all the melodrama, I think they laid that on a bit too thick.  But the fighter action in this film is so good, it's worth watching in theaters for the action alone.  The enemy next gen fighters looked badass (SU-57s?).

Loved it and genuinely satisfied with it, how a sequel should be.

Was a bit disappointed Payback didn't get a little bit of redemption between her and Hangman. She was a favorite against the new cast. Miles Teller did a great job of channeling Anthony Edward's Goose.

Yes.

The last scene with Val was pretty great, too. So glad Tom talked him into doing the film; having seen him in his prime, it's a bit heartbreaking to know he's struggled with health problems for many years. Even in his limited capacity, the guy still has his old charm.

Def shades of Star Wars in there. I get the sense that Macross Plus was likely inspired, in part at least, by the original Top Gun, so drawing a comparison at this point is a bit moot. I hope at least one of the Hornet drivers in this film was inspired by the original TG. They did some great flying in this movie, and though I wish they'd brought in the F-35, at least in a supporting role, it was pretty cool to see the old Tomcat strutting her stuff. Still a beautiful plane, she and the Hornet. The actual in-cockpit filming is amazing.

Honestly, having avoided all spoilers except the trailer, I figured Maverick would be flying the Darkstar at the end to save the day. Glad I was wrong. But, watching those Darkstar scenes reminded me of the brave days of experimental flight when guys like Yeager strapped on a new untested machine intended to set some new flight milestone- we owe so much to a small group of extraordinary pilots, then and now, for having the courage, commitment, and savvy to do such a demanding job at the very likely risk of great injury or death. I salute them all.

I'd love to see a roundtable discussion as to how they came up with 'the mission'.  Curious to see what Mover has to say about it, too. The identity of the enemy country is never mentioned, but of course the use of Russian aircraft narrows the playing field a little. There's a scene featuring a piece of ground equipment, and I was trying to see what sort of characters were on the instruments, but the camera never stayed on it long enough to make out, likely on purpose.

The enemy fighters were based on either the Su-57 or the T-50 Pak-Fa, both of which bear striking resemblances to my beloved YF-23. Makes it all the more gulling seeing enemy forces flying a plane that looks like what our Air Force should be flying today.  Nice to see a Hind in there too.

Well, to be fair, it's a sequel to a movie with a lot of melodrama, and this really captured the feel of the original, with lots and lots of nods. IMHO, it was a proper sequel, and I think Tony Scott (RIP) would have loved it.

I couldn't help but notice how much the plot copies from Iron Eagle II of all things.

 

Seriously we got a veteran pilot recalled to train a group of misfits for a suicide mission to blow up a nuclear weapons facility that involves flying down a narrow canyon to avoid antiaircraft fire followed by a vertical climb and firing weapons into an exhaust port for the facility.

 

Speaking of exhaust ports what other movies involve firing into an exhaust port only three meters wide? Something involving A New Hope I think? You know damn well it was intentional when the briefing simulation in Top Gun shows a little triangle dropping a bomb down the exhaust port matching the briefing animation from Star Wars almost shot for shot.  🙂

It met my expectations and lived up to the hype. A worthy sequel, impressive aerial scenes, and some 80s cheese. Dialog at times was corny - but ok. I loved it!!

Seeing them add this to Microsoft Flight Simulator was a rather interesting surprise, and I'm glad they went to the effort to add both that and the F-18 to the new sim.  The FSX F-18 was never insanely accurate, but it was fun to fly, and I expect this SR-72 will be the same.

I'm sad they didn't include any scenery content with that update though.  With all of the amazing mapping tech that went into the sim, it's a crying shame that the auto-gen scenery for FSX grinds the new sim's scenery for places like China Lake and Edwards AFB into the dirt by comparison.  FSX had static F-16s for Edwards, and in the proper markings, and China Lake at least had accurate buildings.  FS2020 just has garbage auto-gen scenery assets thrown all over with no effort expended at all (rows of Cessnas, some parked sticking halfway through hangar walls, even).

I expect it has something to do with them being restricted from using their map-generating tools with military installations, but it looks like they just decided to use that as an excuse to exert no effort at all, and take the Bethesda route, relying on the players to finish their unfinished content.

No, it is much closer to the SR-71 Blackbird.  With a bit of the B2 stealth bomber thrown in.

Just came back from watching this movie at the theater.

It's a prettty good movie. It doesn't have the fun loving music video feel of the original but that's OK. I appreciated that it didn't disrespect the lore of the original movie (unlikes certain sequel movies of other franchises). In fact, I'd say it was very respectful of the original.

I particuarly liked how they handled Maverick's relation with Iceman and Rooster.

The real-life aerial footage cinematography was freaking amazing. I loved it!

There was some fakey CG stuff with the hypersonic aircraft and F-14 but it was done well enough and doesn't detract from the film.

The only negative I can think of is all the unrealistic stuff in relation to how the real US Navy operates. I mean, that was the case with original movie too but it's even more apparent in this movie. It's OK though. I realize it's a Hollywood movie and liberties have to be taken.

 Oh, and yes, the story-plot "mission" is pretty much The Dam Busters / Star Wars / Iron Eagle II.

I actually get the toys he’s talking about. Back in the day I remember a lot of things trying to do a stealth fighter toy and they looked a lot like a wider shorter sr-71 and looked really close to the plane in this movie.

Easy, they passed the controller around while playing Ace Combat's canyon run missions. 😄

I was excited to see the Hind too, that was menacing model of one.

I'm glad I caught this film on the big screen,  nice rumbling sound, spectacular visuals, and seeing a mature Jennifer Connely all added up to a great time at the movies for me.
