kalvasflam
I like it... I just hope they don’t stray too far from reality, I don’t really need the next gen Fighter in this, Maverick in F-18s would be enough. Ok, may be an F-35. Shadow
We also still don't get any whiff of an opposition fighter in this one. Only sign of a fight seems to be one of the Rhino's dumping flares to avoid a surface-to-air missile it would appear.

I've described Top Gun as "the chick flick guys like", and I stand by this. The thing is 90% romance and drama, and 10% pilots being awesome. They put in just enough jets to keep guys from realizing what they were watching. The Top Gun people think they saw isn't actually a movie that exists. The thing is 90% romance and drama, and 10% pilots being awesome. They put in just enough jets to keep guys from realizing what they were watching. The Top Gun people think they saw isn't actually a movie that exists. Regardless of the whole romance story and the typical Tom Cruise inner turmoil schtick that became a hallmark of many of his movies throughout the 90's, Top Gun was one of the best recruiting vehicles ever made for the Navy. Jets are cool, and the movie did a good job of glamorizing the fighter pilot life. I'm not sure it'll have the same effect on today's generation of young men and women, as they're more interested in the next version of iPhone than jumping into a fast plane. Moreover, I think today's youth are a little more savvy than we were in the 80's, due to social media saturation, Google, and Wiki at their fingertips; I assume more kids are aware that only a small percentage of people ever see the inside of a cockpit, and the vast majority , regardless of branch, end up working on the ground. As a hydraulics specialist in the Air Force, the only time I ever flew was when I went on TDYs , and later in my career, deployments to nowhere noteworthy or glamorous, packed into a KC-135 (with a really crappy environmental system) along with about twenty or so peeps, and several palettes of cargo. It made for a long, uncomfortable ride across the pond. So, if any of you guys reading this are aspiring jet jockies, know that it's a tough career to get into, but if you make it, the fact is, the military accommodates you very well. It's a good life, and it's a powerful, nigh requisite, stepping stone to achieving rank and greater positions of authority in those services that fly. If you can't be a pilot, go medical, finance, or personnel (non-ers, as we in the aircraft world cheekily call them)- avoid CE, aircraft maintenance, and security forces, where long thankless days in any conceivable weather are your destiny. There's a reason you don't see movies about the latter three.

Well, the jet parts that were in the OG Top Gun were very memorable, which is why I guess so many people only remember that part and not Maverick's woman issues, or his trauma around losing his RIO. The early 707/DC-8 engines are very much "fighter jet engines without afterburners". They did not use bleed air and a/c packs "like every airliner after, to this day" to provide for "the fleshlings being hauled along". They had turbocompressers (nose-mounted for the DC-8, pylon-mounted for the 707) which quite "independently, and not all that well compared to 1960's and later stuff" provided air etc. If you flew in a re-engined KC-135, that should have a similar system as the re-engined DC-8, and if it STILL sucked, I don't know why... Seriously, they must have CGI'd the non-skid. you could scrub the deck for years and it would still look like sh*t unless you just applied it. peter
Watched an F-18 pilot review of the trailer.....he mentioned something that I'm not sure is actually true. He said that it was his understanding that all the flying in the movie was supposedly real, then he got to the shot of the F14 and did not confirm whether it was real or not. Was what he said about all the flying being real, true? He seemed unsure about the F14 scene. Or maybe it was real footage, but from before their retirement and just enhanced for the scene? There's no way they got one flying again right? Would be sweet if this movie was just a teaser for F14s coming back, but I know it's just wishful thinking, lol!
