Ladic
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/47033 Building on recent scuttlebutt that a new TOP GUN movie might possibly/kinda/sorta be in the works, THIS piece in Vulture says that Paramount has "made offers" to Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott to produce and direct (respectively) a sequel to 1986's TOP GUN. The Powers That Be are wanting Christopher McQuarrie (VALKYRIE, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, the upcoming WOLVERINE sequel) to do script work. Seems Cruise has agreed to reprise his Pete Maverick Mitchell role, which is to be considerably smaller than in the first film. Vulture says one condition Cruise put on this abridged appearance was that his character not show-up in an obvious way (i.e. a flight instructor) - Vulture's sources say McQuarrie has found a way to accommodate this stipulation. More as we know more.
David Hingtgen
No Tomcat=not a good movie. Seriously, Top Gun 2 should have been made like 1990 or so, when the F-14B was in service. Quick and easy explanation to the audience--"It's just like the original F-14, but with 40% MORE POWER".
azrael
So they're tired of doing remakes and now on to 20-year-later sequels?
eugimon
as I posted on cinematical back in 2008: http://blog.moviefone.com/2008/07/21/oh-no-top-gun-2 Could be AWESOME! Maverick is a former hero who has fallen from grace for making a variety of insensitive and inflamatory remarks about the government and the president. Now, he's just a shell of the man he was, his wife has left him, even Goose's wife no longer speaks to him (having made questionable moral choices herself and generally let herself go). Maverick now fills his days flying for reality shows on the Discovery network, acting as copilot to young actors who fly around in mock air combat battles but Maverick still longs for the glory days. Longing to feel the loving embrace of an f-14 again, he defects to the only country on earth still flying them... IRAN! Branded a traitor and hunted by Iceman (who has now become a CIA assassin), Maverick learns of a evil plot by the evil Iranians to launch an evil attack against the unsuspecting west! Will maverick remember who his wingman really is? Will maverick make the hard choice to defend truth, justice, and the American way?

Zor Primus
Well if they go with an F-18 or F-22 Raptor I'll be happy. Question here is what air force are they going to set up as the "enemy" when the time comes. Not to pat the USA too much on the back but other then Israel and the Russians who really can fly against us? China? Hmm...doubt anything they have is superior...numbers maybe...holy crap a TIE like swarm, now thats something I'd pay to see.
ATLMYK
It would not be F-22's as those are for the Air Force only. Most likely F-18's with a small chance for F-35 JSF, since all action will probably be cgi... As far as the enemy most people look at China as a economic enemy not as a potential war zone. Kinda like how Japan was viewed in the 80's. If they don't go the random made-up middle easter country or Break-away-soviet-state route and went real world the only two options would be North Korea or Iran. frothymug
Just because they used MiGs in Top Gun, doesn't mean that they were fighting against some part of the Soviet Bloc. They could just make up a plane and call it, say... SV-51 and have them fight against F-14s and... oh wait, that's been done already. taksraven
Nah, this film needs to be about Mavericks + Icemans honeymoon........ AND No Don Simpson = crap film. "We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make a statement. Our obligation is to make money." The ultimate expression of film industry capitalism. He talked the talk and walked the walk, a rare combination, even though it cost him his life. ron5864
Maybe this time, they'll have squadrons of rogue ghost fighters(drones) to deal with being controlled by enemy forces or an AI system. This sequel is not such a good idea, like Ben Stiller making Zoolander 2.

Dynaman
Topgun 2: Independence Day 2. Nuff said. Top Gun 2: Electric Boogaloo... Damn, they should just make a sequel to Stealth. Despite it's legion of flaws, Stealth was a better movie then Top Gun. With Top Gun, the most impressive air stunt was used twice in the film, lame. Not to mention all the characters were cardboard cutouts - at least the Stealth plane in Stealth had some character to it (sadly the human cast did not)
CF18
The best part of Top Gun is that they use real footage from real planes. Now? It will be all CG.
Ghost Train
No, there will be no planes, CG or otherwise. Top Gun II will be about a pilot grounded by injury who decides to become an English teacher and tells inner city kids to stay out of drugs, gangs, etc. A confrontation with said street gangstas ensues. That is the true meaning to be a Top Gun.

The aerial cinematography is among the best that's been shown. And, it hardly need be said, was of REAL planes doing what real planes can actually DO. Stealth? Well, it sucked. David Hingtgen
Actually, a decent chunk of Top Gun was large radio-control F-14's. But again--just like the original Star Destroyer still looks good, the model F-14's still look good--because they were still physically present, and actually existed to be filmed. Nothing looks nor moves more realistically, than real objects. CGI always ages and looks bad later. Flight is the hardest thing to animate IMHO, because no CG model-maker can mentally three-dimensionally figure out EXACTLY how things move---there's a difference between FLYING IN AIR, and simply "moving around in space". But an actual flying model has to obey the laws of physics and move aerodynamically.

The last good Tomcat movie was Speed & Angels....might not count though, since it's a documentary.

The last good Tomcat movie was Speed & Angels....might not count though, since it's a documentary. Super Hornets could fulfill the role just fine I think. The problem would be the Aggressors and MiGs. US Navy Adversary squadrons currently fly F-5E/N's, Hornets, and F-16s. So the first movie's "MiG-28" (the F-5s) or the F-16s would have to play the adversary role because using Hornets would make it confusing to follow. The ubiquitous and well known F-16 shouldn't play the MiG role. Super Hornets vs. Legacy Hornets playing the MiG role? Even with different paint jobs, it could become hard to keep track of who is who.

thegunny
Super Hornets YAWN Take away the music and the movie was a pile of crap. Put 2 after the title and use F-18s of any type and it will be a bigger pile of crap. Reprise Tom Cruise and you won't be able to make enough toilet paper to clean up the mess
areaseven
I thought Tom Cruise was done working with Paramount. But if they can't get Cruise and insist on having someone who looks just like him, there's always the Tom Cruise clone Sean Faris (Kyo in The King of Fighters, Jake in Never Back Down).
