Anthony Appleyard Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 (edited) Does this gun belong in the Macross scenario, or Robotech, or Gundam, or what? What is it? I found it online as a CGI model for Poser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poser). Its readme file called it a "V-Gun". It is about 4 feet 5 inches long; it was texture-mapped with 'U N SPACY' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.N._Spacy) along each side in big uppercase. When I found it I interpreted it as a raygun and named its 3 main parts from back to front "powerpack, reactor, ray generator". Edited August 1, 2010 by Anthony Appleyard Quote
Anthony Appleyard Posted August 1, 2010 Author Posted August 1, 2010 I made this Poser render of it being used :: but out-of-scenario. Here it makes short work of an enemy attempt at highly-armored spacesuits. Quote
Graham Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 The gun is of course the 'GU-11', 55mm gunpod used by the iconic VF-1 Valkyrie variable fighter, of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross fame. It is a 55mm calbre, 3 barreled Gatling/Vulcan type cannon with an ammunition capacity of 200rds, that fires at a cyclic rate of 1,200 rounds per minute. The ammunition is stored in an internal helical type magazine that wraps around the barrels. The GU-11 gunpod is significantly larger than 4 feet 5 inches long, given that it is carried by a 12.68m tall robot. Graham Quote

The VF-1 and GU-11 gunpod were designed by Shoji Kawamori. I'm not sure when the first toys for it were released, but it was definitely after the show started. Actually, a Macross toy was taken and used for Transformers. The Super VF-1S was released as the G1 Autobot Jetfire. Quote

Properly, it was a 55mm gatling gun. You should take a look around this site, you might enjoy some of the background info on the ships, destroids, and variable fighters. http://www.macross2.net/m3/m3.html (SDF Macross and Do You Remember Love? are the two with the VF-1) Quote
