JB0 Posted October 17 Posted October 17 Man, every time someone puts out a new "Nintendo 64 controller, but better-designed" I am just reminded that what Nintendo 64 fans want is actually just the Saturn 3D Controller. This 8bitdo one is the most obvious yet. Just accept it, guys. Embrace perfection, and quit pretending you actually want what Nintendidn't. Quote

Valkyrie Hunter D Posted November 6 Posted November 6 I always wondered why Phantasy Star IV was so damn expensive compared to other Genesis games upon its release. This podcast with Victor Ireland (Working Designs) gives a reason: Ireland wanted to publish the game, and Sega US did not want to, thinking RPGs are a bad idea. Sega Japan asks Sega US if PSIV is such a bad idea, then why does Working Designs want to publish it so badly? Sega US then releases the game and jacks up the price so high, thinking the price will tank the game, validating its anti-RPG stance. The game proceeds to sell out. A big thank you to Bernie Stolar (head of Sega US at the time) for allowing me to play one of the best 16 bit RPGs (albeit at an outrageous price). Quote

Man, every time I think I've heard the dumbest story out of 90s Sega, someone find a new one. If Sega Japan isn't trying to sabotage Sega America to make Sega Japan look good, Sega America's trying to sabotage Sega America to make Sega Japan look bad. Edited November 7 by JB0 Quote

F-ZeroOne Posted November 21 Posted November 21 The amazing thing about the return of the working class champion of British retro gaming is that its retailing (in the UK at least) for almost the same price as the original product!: Quote

Hikuro Posted November 25 Posted November 25 Question for ya guys. Buddy of mine has been getting into retro collecting, and he recently was on walmart coming across the GBA Pokemon games at 5 bucks a pop so he bought all 5 at $28. Course he didn't realize they're reproduction cartridges. Anyone had any experience with such things and hopefully NOT had back experiences? I'd feel bad for him wasting 28 bucks on games that are gonna be terrible. I've actually been looking at getting the EZ-Flash GBA cartridge and just inputing a bunch of roms onto that since there's no way in hell I'm paying 170 bucks for a pokemon game. Has anyone had experience with the EZ-Flash before? Quote

I never trust certain sellers and rarely buy vintage stuff anymore, so I wouldn’t know exactly what to look out for these days. The best way to avoid it is to get to know a seller. Some you can tell are shady, but most of the time you can actually find cool people that frown upon the fakes. Just keep in mind most of those will definitely charge more, but often offer good tips on what they look out for. Quote

Has anyone had experience with the EZ-Flash before? If your buddy wanted the games because he just wanted to play them, he's probably ok. In my (limited) experience sometimes repros flat out refuse to boot, are loaded with some sort or romhack, but most of the time there was no real software difference than a legit cart. If he wanted them as a collector, though, yeah, they're basically worthless. As for EZ-Flash, I don't remember which one I used, but I had one way back in the day. It was good for most games, but it didn't have the motion sensor for games like WarioWare Twisted or the light sensor for the Boktai games. I think it might have had issues with the clock for some Pokemon games, but I'm getting old and don't recall. I think maybe newer carts have more features. The game selection screen was pretty basic, and it didn't offer any extra features like cheats or save states. As long as the games you want to play work and your main goal is playing on the original hardware it should be fine. FWIW, a similar device like the R4i DS Gold was the way to go for original DS games, but for the 3DS you're better off getting a big SD card, installing custom firmware, then downloading the games you want through the Homebrew store. I still need to buy a 4-player cabinet and modify it, I just can't bring myself to carve up my turtles 4-player cabinet. I keep eyeing the Golden Axe 4-player. Someday. AvP arcade is probably one of my favorites of all time. Needs the HD remaster treatment. Quote

davidwhangchoi Posted November 26 Posted November 26 It was released on Capcom Home Arcade as the first official home release. The long awaited port release was on something that no one really wanted. Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted November 28 Posted November 28 (edited) I saw that video the other day. What got me the most was the beginning, when game boxes came with stuff! (might be a bit different for most of you folks, I know you had your Apple IIs and things but the general impression I get is the NES is kind of the King of Retro for you; in the UK home computers held on for longer as a gaming platform; it was really the Mega Drive - Sega Genesis - that kicked off consoles here [1] whereas "big box" computer titles stuck around for some time). [1] Simplifying, the Sega Master System for example was popular here before that for example. Edited November 28 by F-ZeroOne Quote

Most people just didn't have home video games between the time they liquidated the Ataris, Colecos, and Intellivisions and the time Nintendo rose. Edited November 29 by JB0 Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Yes, thats kind of been my impression; as I say, in the UK at least (and probably a fair bit of Europe) home computers were the dominant gaming platform probably from 1982 until at least 1989. Excepting arcades, of course. Quote

Yeah he’s just buying for the sake of playing, I’m sort of in the fence, I buy for the sake of collecting and playing but I do have a threshold where paying 200+ a cartridge is highway robbery for a used game. i sometimes have a hard enough time justifying 40+ for some old games as well but it really just depends how nostalgic I am for them. i don’t enjoy playing emulators on my computer like I did when I was in my early 20s soooooo long ago. But for a flash cartridge that’ll basically hold all my games, and play it on the preferred console, that’s a compromise I’m willing to make. His repros are supposed to show up today along with MMPR the movie for the sega gen I ordered, so as his Christmas present is making his a pokeball container that’ll hold all those repro units. Quote

The thing with Batocera is that it's an entire operating system with the emulators baked in. It takes some work to setup, but once you have the PC you installed it on basically becomes a console, with gorgeous menus separated by console, with box art for games, all navigable with a controller. It supports a ton of controllers so, with adapters, you can use the original ones, but I'm content with using one of 8bitdo's. Quote
