EXO Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2010/...ses-hellcyon-1/ I won't say who, and maybe I'll get killed for doing this, but... Quote
Phyrox Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) It's like a game, spot the "homage" Is it like Appleseed meets Megazone23? Visually that's what I'm getting (with maybe some Syd Mead in there too) Edited April 6, 2010 by Phyrox Quote
EXO Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 what about the obvious Macross(World) reference? But I thought it was an obvious Shirow Homage... Quote
the white drew carey Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 New Jersey REPRESENT!!! (under the left shoulder intake) Quote
eugimon Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Is it like Appleseed meets Megazone23? Visually that's what I'm getting (with maybe some Syd Mead in there too) look at the left hand side of the panel, the poster on the building and then there's the graphic on the building in the middle. Quote
Ignacio Ocamica Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Minmay Guard hexagon pattern on the building and NJ marking on the chest of the exosuit (macross references) Quote
anime52k8 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 look at the left hand side of the panel, the poster on the building and then there's the graphic on the building in the middle. Is that some New Macross class colonies gonging on in this here comic? Quote
Ghadrack Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 I think I'm missing some sort of inside joke, but is this a new comic by a member of the forums? If so i'll reserve a copy at my comic shop and give it a chance. out here in Podunk TN, not much chance that they are just goign to stock a bunch of copies so i can stumble upon it. Quote
RavenHawk Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Nice! Congrats Lucas! So, I can assume the bike transforms, right? Quote
Lonely Soldier Boy Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Hey all. Just pimpin' my new book here. Issue #1 just hit the shelves in the US yesterday and there's already a nice review up at Comic Attack. This guy really nailed it. Anyway, I hope you like it and post some comments about it. Quote
505thAirborne Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 That looks really awesome my friend, impressive!! I will have to pick up a copy of this one. The mecha in the background has a touch of Appleseed to it!! Quote
RDClip Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 the bike looks like a green version of Cloud's bike in Final Fantasy 7: AC Quote
Wanzerfan Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 The artwork kinda reminds me of the stuff in my Mekton Zeta books. Quote
electric indigo Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I really like the artwork. And some good designs in there. I'll snatch the trade paperback when it comes out. Quote
Lonely Soldier Boy Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Hey all, sorry I started a new thread about this, I didn't know about this one (been too busy to visit MW lately), but thank you all for the kind words. Well, you all guessed most of my influences, but what can I say, we all come from the same place here, don't we? Hugh: Of course the bike transforms, what's the point of having a bike in a robot story if it doesn't transform into one? BTW, the cover >EXO< posted is the old version that made it into the internet somehow. The mecha design in the background ended up with a few differences in design (Still very Shirow-esque, of course). Quote
EXO Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 I'm glad someone did a book like this. This type of book has been sorely missing from the shelves for a while now. Here's hoping for more! Quote
Ghadrack Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I'll see if I can get a copy and add you to my box list at the comic shop. Congrats on getting it published! Quote
the white drew carey Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Congrats, Lonely Soldier Boy! Now I just gotta get my arse in gear on getting my idea ready for submission. Any suggestions? Quote
Lonely Soldier Boy Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Thanks, Ghadrack. TWDC: Have you published before? If not, you should try the smaller companies, it's more likely for them to publish author stuff from a newcomer. Bigger companies like Dark Horse usually require that you had worked for them on licensed books before you pitch them your own. Quote

Bigger companies like Dark Horse usually require that you had worked for them on licensed books before you pitch them your own. Nothing big at all. I had a strip for two years in an independent student newspaper in Madison, WI (daily circulation varied between 16,000 and 20,000), but it was more for the fun of it and quality definitely wasn't the most important thing! Yeah, I am going to be doing the whole creator/writer/artist package with this idea. I've been reading up on the submission guidelines for a lot of the publishers out there but, since this project is going to more of a labor of love than with a direct intent to publish, I am probably going to make a full first issue before I put together submission packages based on the individual publisher's criteria. Thanks for advice! Quote

Lonely Soldier Boy Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Hahaha, it took a Chilean to figure that one out. Yes, I'm a big fan of Salvador Allende. One of his nephews is a friend of mine. I even paraphrased one of his most memorable speeches in the book as a homage. Quote
the white drew carey Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Hellcyon- not just a crackling good story, but chock full of cultural references from around the world! Quote
Vepariga Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Wow ,LonelySoldierBoy thats mad! Excellent work, love it! Quote
Dangaioh Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 (edited) Great work indeed. I like the Macross/Megazone/Shirow homages... and for some odd reason, I get the feeling there's going to be a MW Forum reference (in future issues) in there somewhere. Edited April 17, 2010 by Dangaioh Quote

sidearmsalpha Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Picked up the book yesterday. Haven't had a chance to read it yet. Looks fantastic though. Quote
Twoducks Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 ... I may get spanked for saying this, but absolutely nothing good has come out of Marxism. Thanks for sharing your breathtakingly deep historical insights here on MW. Suck knowledge gathered no doubt from reading the first sentence of a wiki article about Allende shows how much respect you have for the HIGHLY complicated and tragic social-political past (and present) of a foreign country… Awesome looking mecha’s and backdrop there Lucas! I’ll try to hunt it. Being Dark Horse, at least I’m sure to see a translated TPB sooner or later here. Quote
eugimon Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 (edited) cool, congrats on the book, art looks great. Edited April 17, 2010 by eugimon Quote
Lonely Soldier Boy Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 (edited) Thanks for the kind words, guys. I really hope you enjoy the book beyond the many obvious visual influences (of which I'm very proud, BTW). The support form this community in particular means a lot to me. Twoducks: Yeah, I'm sure there'll be a Spanish edition eventually. I hope they let me do the translation myself when the time comes. Edited April 17, 2010 by Lonely Soldier Boy Quote
