PetarB Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 (edited) Arnold just had such a presence back then it's hard to separate him from Conan in my mind. People come to these things for different reasons. For me, as a fan of the original literature, Arnold is NOT 'the' Conan... but I still think Milius's movie is one of the best fantasy movies ever, and I love it to death, and I can see why people are scratching their heads. So far, this looks a bit schizophrenic, but I will go and see it. Edited July 20, 2011 by PetarB Quote

Plus, I planned on giving the new Conan a chance. I guess it's kind of like James Bond. The movies gave most people a different idea of the character than the books, so when the movies return to the source it upsets some of us a bit. Quote

Well, I'm not sure folks are getting bent out of shape because the movie is returing to the source (books). It's just that nobody really envisioned Conan as a mascara wearing, metrosexual surfer with manicured facial hair. I haven't read the books, but did read some of the comics and this fruit-cake does not look like : It's true, Arnie wasn't a 100% accurate depiction of Conan either (too clean and not the right hair), but at least he had the bulk and a face that was sort of the right shape Edited July 21, 2011 by peter Quote

I'm not a big fan of the movie, but (as I've said before) I really like the original Robert E. Howard stories (not so much the Lin Carter, L. Sprague DeCamp, and others who came later), and I don't see any connection between this new movie and the stories. Quote
Remko Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Funny... I've read an interview with Jason Momoa a few weeks back about the new Conan movie, and am just rewatching Atlantis season two. Hadn't made the link though.... Probably because he looks a whole lot different as Conan compared to his character Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis. This is how he looks now: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/jason-momoa-shows-the-bulk-of-conan.php If you ask me, pretty close to more than a few of the drawings shown above. Still, I look forward to this movie. And, well, face it. The first movie was pretty good mainly because of James Earl Jones, Max von Sydow and Sandahl Bergman. The second movie just sucked. BTW, anyone would make a guess as to which actress will play Red Sonja in the remake? This Is still a rumour, but I'm pretty sure that will recieve a remake as well. Brigitte Nielsen was, well, okay... But as I'm know reading the new Red Sonja graphic novels, they could do better. Just hope they don't cast Halle Berry or something... They already screwed that up casting her as Ororo Munroe (Storm) in the X-Men trilogy.... Talking about degrading a character.... Quote

I didn't see any 'manicured facial hair' on Conan in either of the trailers. It doesn't look like he has any facial hair at all in the trailers. Or mascara for that matter. Momoa's not perfect, but neither was Arnie. Like any literary figure though, everyone will have their own interpretations. I'm just happy that we are getting a new Conan movie with a little money behind it. Quote

But Got Dayum, she is one beautiful woman. Positively MILF-tastic... Meh, all this pre-movie hype serves to do is make me wanna go out and rent Beastmaster, and bask in its superiority to this big-budget garbage. LOL, now that would make a funny a$$ .gif: Marc Singer and Arnie, bitch-slapping this new barbarian-wannabe with some fur pelts Quote

PetarB Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Erin Free, who is a local reviewer I usually trust, has put in a review: http://www.filmink.com.au/review/conan-the-barbarian-3d-film/ Extract: "Conan The Barbarian is what a good sword-and-sorcery flick should be: violent, fast-paced, and half-mad." I just hope I get to see a NON-3D version. Really sick of 3D. Anyway I'll post my thoughts in a couple of days time, when I get to see it! Quote
areaseven Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 52% - Obviously, not enough critics saw it. Maybe by next week, it will go down further. Quote

jenius Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 I don't know if it's been mentioned here (probably) but that actor made an awesome Khol Drogo in the Game of Thrones. Quote

Duke Togo Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Most reviews are now up, and it certainly looks like a stinker. Something like 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. Ironically, the choice for Conan is one of the few things I've seen praised. Quote

Hehe, I want a t-shirt with that printed on it: "Crom laughs at your Four-Winds." Original Conan aired on AMC(?) last night. Just reminded me of why I won't be spending my $$$ on seeing that new garbage in the theaters. Quote
sabretooth Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 it was pretty good. the opening is indefinably eye opening. Quote
Negotiator Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 My only complaints...it could have used a bit more magic and he needs to settle on a voice. Overall I think its a decent start. Quote

Really, the plot is tacky. No going around it. But the way it presents itself, alongside the badass musical score, just made it gel together. At least for me. Quote

I read an article in the Houston Comical (Chronicle) that it was his artwork that inspired Conan's actor for this role.I haven't read of any of Howard's works, but isn't Conan a disciple of Sun Tsu (tactically speaking, that is; I know he worships Crom)? the white drew carey Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Huh? The law should be written so that kind of obvious money-grubbing is highly punished. SLM had all of the time in the world to bring attention to this but, of course, waited until after the film is released. I call shenanigans! Quote

The fact that someone can claim the character at all is beyond me. Next thing you know, someone will claim exclusive rights to King Arthur or Jesus. Quote

Agent ONE Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 Saw this movie.. If it had been called "Steve the Barbarian" I would think it was just a crummy movie, with porn level acting, but as I feared and expressed earlier in this thread, this tarnishes the name of Conan. Total crap movie. Now we will never have Arnold in the franchise again. So pissed. Quote
eugimon Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 saw it. It is hilariously bad. Rose mcgowan is particularly hilarious in her role as the incestuous valley girl sorceress. Quote

If you walked into a theatre and actually paid money to see this, I will have lost what little respect I had left of you. Crom and Arnold cry for you Agent One - the fallen warrior. Well, we can always hope for an enitirely CG Conan to be made one day, with Arnold's likeness. Edited August 29, 2011 by peter Quote
