Universal Soldier: Regeneration

Foresight Unlimited/Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 2010

Directed by John Hyams

Based upon characters created by Richard Rothstein, Christopher Leitch and Dean Devlin (Independence Day, Stargate).

Running Time: 97 minutes

Rated R for graphic violence and profanity.

Cast

Jean-Claude Van Damme (go look for the film Monaco Forever for his breakthrough role) as Luc Deveraux

Dolph Lundgren (Jack Cain in I Come in Peace, He-Man in Masters of the Universe) as Andrew Scott

Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski (MMA fighter) as NGU

Mike Pyle (another MMA fighter) as Capt. Kevin Burke

Synopsis

Terrorists in Russia have kidnapped the prime minister's children and taken over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. They demand the release of their comrades within 72 hours, or they kill the children and blow up Chernobyl. Among their ranks is a Next-Generation UniSol, which was smuggled in by a rogue scientist.

Meanwhile, former UniSol Luc Deveraux is undergoing rehabilitation to return to society. With very little time left, the U.S. military drags Luc back in their hands and sends him to combat the terrorists, rescue the children and stop the bomb from detonating. Little does he know that waiting for him is a clone of his former nemesis Andrew Scott.

Lowdown

When will people learn that sequels never work for most movies? Take Universal Soldier, for example. The first film was an underrated masterpiece, but everything else made after that was crap. There were two direct-to-video sequels that didn't even have Van Damme. And then, there was the disastrous 1999 theatrical follow-up Universal Soldier: The Return.

Universal Soldier: Regeneration is no different. There is absolutely no cohesive storyline in this film. The action is flat with nothing spectacular. And perhaps the biggest waste of time is Dolph Lundgren's appearance. He does absolutely nothing in this film but fight for about five minutes before

Van Damme blows his brains out

.

Andre Arlovski's role as a new UniSol does nothing for the film, either. Sure, he has some decent fights with Van Damme and fellow MMA fighter Mike Pyle, but other than that, he sucks on film. Unfortunately, it looks like this won't be the end of the franchise, given the film's ending.

If you love action and sci-fi films and are a fan of the original Universal Soldier, do yourself a favor and skip this one. You will be utterly disappointed.

Sounds like he got the better deal out of this.

Err............I guess the director or script writer doesn't realise that the remaining reactors of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant were all shut down and abandoned in 1986 after the disaster at reactor No.4 and there's a 17 mile exclusion zone around the area.

I saw it.

I gotta say, I wanted this thing to be awesome... I prayed to CROM that this thing would be awesome... But it really wasn't so great. Jesus, JCVD IS a decent actor when he is actually put in a studio with a real script, but who the hell picks his scripts?

He actually rejected STARING in Sly's new "Expendables" in favor of this.

This is so depressing.

Hikaru protected himself from the vacuum of space with a scarf... Lots of people don't know lots of things.

Ah, no. The remaining reactors (No's 1,2, and 3) were allowed to keep operating as long as possible after 1986. The last operating reactor on the site (Number 3) was shut down in December, 2000.

From Wikipedia....

Chernobyl after the disaster

Following the accident, questions arose about the future of the plant and its eventual fate. All work on the unfinished reactors 5 and 6 was halted three years later. However, the trouble at the Chernobyl plant did not end with the disaster in reactor 4. The damaged reactor was sealed off and 200 metres (660 ft) of concrete was placed between the disaster site and the operational buildings. The Ukrainian government continued to let the three remaining reactors operate because of an energy shortage in the country. A fire broke out in the turbine building of reactor 2 in 1991;[83] the authorities subsequently declared the reactor damaged beyond repair and had it taken offline. Reactor 1 was decommissioned in November 1996 as part of a deal between the Ukrainian government and international organizations such as the IAEA to end operations at the plant. On 15 December 2000, then-President Leonid Kuchma personally turned off Reactor 3 in an official ceremony, shutting down the entire site[84].

Just being a nerd, but there was a huge controversy when the remaining reactors were allowed to keep operating after the accident, but Ukraine had a power shortage...

At the end you don't even know if Van Damme lives or dies

He lives.

There's just no resolution to his character in the end, as he simply runs away. So we don't know whether he's placed back in storage or sent back to rehabilitation.

And since Capt. Burke (Mike Pyle) is converted into a UniSol and cloned, he'll either be the hero or villain of the next sequel (if there will be a next sequel).

I thought since they juiced him up again there was no going back, like because he had the chemicals reintroduced, he would for sure die? I dunno, it wasn't clear.
