Vostok 7 Posted January 25, 2010 Author Posted January 25, 2010 (edited) Here's my Feddie and my Orion cap'n from the Klingon side. Gotta love them green skinned girls! Edited January 25, 2010 by Vostok 7 Quote
Mechamaniac Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Anyone know how to cancel a preorder with Atari online? The beta was cool and all but I can't see myself putting tons of time into this game. Quote
eugimon Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 I had the exact opposite reaction. I started off not really liking the game but after the big patch they did I got way more into it (since the away missions went from unplayable to playable). And getting into the nicer ships really opened up the game play. And I like that there's so much to customize and tweak. The ship layouts, the crew skills (both ground and space). there's some stuff I think they dropped the ball on. For instance, I wish the ship customization was more than just cosmetic. It would be nice if the different ships in each class had slightly different stats and mixing and matching parts actually meant something.. but oh well, still fun to customize your own ship. Quote
kung flu Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 I'm really looking forward to getting a defiant ship. Quote
David Hingtgen Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Final day, went on a tour of the galaxy. Klingon space isn't open though. Anyways; The badlands: Hobus supernova remains (I think): Remains of Romulus: Me dying up against a Romulan squadron: Bajoran wormhole was open when I went to DS9 again. It closed after a minute or two: Then I found the most fun mission ever! I saw some Federation ships marked as "enemy contact" just a bit "east" of Bajor, so I had to investigate. The mission said Reman, but they seemed to be renegade Starfleet. Neat stuff here. Saw my first Defiant-class: This is me about to die against a +19 Sovereign-class: This is me dying against 2 Sovereigns, a Luna, a Sol, and probably something else: The Prometheus killed me so fast I couldn't get a pic of it. Did you know they can do over 22,600pts of damage in a single attack? Yeah. I didn't even get a "rear shields failing" warning, I just went straight from 100% to a big flaming ball... This is me taking down a Sovereign class. (with a little help from a Defiant, some Norways, and an Akira) Quote
shiroikaze Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 That's pretty epic. I can see that this game is going have alot staying power. I would love to get in on this game but alas, I'm staying away from subscription fees. For those who have played EVE Online (haven't played that either btw), how does Star Trek compare to it? Or is it apples to oranges? Quote
Ghost Train Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Have to admit that damaged-ship effect looks pretty decent. Quote

Or is it apples to oranges? It's worlds apart from EVE, save the fact it's in space, you have ships and they shoot each other. EVE is incredibly complex, from the economy to the crafting to the combat, hell even knowing every skill that effects your ships weapons can be a task. EVE is also extremely PVP focused. EVE is fun, but it has something akin to a learning cliff instead of a learning curve. STO is more story driven, more PVE based and features both ship based and human combat. Also, for the final hours of beta and/or live anyone of MW members looking for another forum member to fleet with, feel free to send me a message. You can find me at Kastigar@Kastigar in game. one_klump Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 (edited) Final day, finally got Lt Commander, and my new ship. Escort class, USS Arcadea. Way more maneuverable than the Miranda class, and packs a bit of a punch. I really like that if I wanted to, I could kit out my old clunker with the new equipment and be viable. Escort is fun, I may try cruiser in live tho. I wish they would give you a preview of the ship's appearance before you had to commit to one of the 3 though, Edited January 26, 2010 by one_klump Quote
Fit For Natalie Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I kept running into the dreaded "Random Rebooting" problem STO has with a fair number of players, judging by the topics and posts about it on the STO forums. As such, I cannot do a mad grinding rush to get my beloved Defiant class. So, this will be my last beta ship. Quote

Yeah, and honestly, I'm not in a place where making a spread sheet to figure out the best DPS, or the best possible teach tree/gear relationship or the best possible aggro control are anywhere remotely interesting or fun to me. The most fun I ever had in WoW was leveling up while partying with a few friends and just having a good time. It soured pretty damn quickly once I started having to invest an hour or two just waiting for the guild to get together, having to respec and regear my character for the guild, etc, etc. Just stopped being fun. So I really like that STO lets you stop playing in the middle of an episode and you can come back to where you left off and that the game play mechanic is very casual gamer friendly. Quote
Vostok 7 Posted January 26, 2010 Author Posted January 26, 2010 I like how this game totally disregards the prime directive 1) It's a return of the Federation vs. Everyone Else "cold war" due to the meddling of other species and 2) It's not like any of the shows or movies maintained strict adherence to the Prime Directive. Exactly why I like STO so much. Sure it's not strictly an MMO since it doesn't FORCE socializing to get the job done, but let me tell you, when you do team up it's an absolute blast and the rewards are better. I like having the option. I too don't have the time anymore to invest hours in an MMO to get anywhere. STO is perfect in that regard. Quote

Yeah i like how its kind of casual cos i didn't really like spending hours grinding away on RF online and when i got into a guild, there were just so many demands that made the game even more boring and less fun. In star trek i can go anywhere, do anything i like without having to be a certain level. Last night in my Miranda class i engaged a klingon fleet, destroying a few bird of preys, but when a small group of us low levels got together to destroy the bigger ships it was extremely satisfying. Vostok 7 Posted January 26, 2010 Author Posted January 26, 2010 That reminds me... Can you ram another ship? There's a "ramming speed" ability that speeds up your ship significantly and causes significant kinetic and crew damage, but does damage to your ship and crew at the same time. Quote
Fit For Natalie Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Is anybody here going to visit Del Taco to get their Type-8 shuttlecraft code? Quote
David Hingtgen Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I was rammed by a Klingon Vor'cha, but I was at full health so it didn't do much. (also he was so close I don't think he had room/time to accelerate much) Now, being close to a Sovereign class when it blows---that'll take you with it! Apparently there is an admiral-level ability for "self-destruct"---and if it's more than a standard warp-core breach, it should be a heck of a boom. Quote

I would love to get in on this game but alas, I'm staying away from subscription fees. For those who have played EVE Online (haven't played that either btw), how does Star Trek compare to it? Or is it apples to oranges? We should add ST Online to the learning-curve chart: This explains the most problematic part of EVE. ... but it's its complexity and sandbox environment that sets its apart from cookie-cutter MMO's. Although it's primarily a PvP game, you don't have to be a combat pilot. There are dedicated mining ships, gargantuan freighters if you're the industrial type, and in-game research for module development. In fact, Market-PvP can be just as fun. As far as MMO's go, EVE has the most realistic and complex economy - they even hired a real PhD in Economics to keep the in-game economy healthy. Another positive is that the player base is generally more mature. The average player age is 27. At 29, I was the youngest in my old corp. Edited January 26, 2010 by Ghost Train Quote

mikeszekely Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Is anybody here going to visit Del Taco to get their Type-8 shuttlecraft code? There are no Del Tacos in western PA that I know of. Well, I guess the beta is over... and my one regret was that I didn't get more screen caps. Since the game was running at the same resolution as my desktop, I've got some nice wallpapers to remember the USS Executor by. As for playing the game when it's released, I think I'm going to hold off... for now. I still need to finish Darksiders, I picked up Mass Effect 2, and I know there are some other games I'll be wanting. I'll wait until the price for the game itself drops and see if they don't make a Romulan faction (I always liked them better than Klingons anyway). Quote

Fit For Natalie Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 (edited) Anybody in the beta event right now? Borg have overrun spacedock. There are no Del Tacos in western PA that I know of. There is a guy who is offering to provide the codes to people (sans cup, of course) for a paypal donation of $3.50USD for the cost of the cup and his drive. He's also going to give away a retail copy of STO via the retailer of the winner's choice. For every code you buy, you get 1 entry: http://www.minotek.com/os/news.php So there, for a couple of bucks you get a pet, 2 days of game access (promotion ends Feb 15, I think) and a chance to win a copy of STO. kaiotheforsaken Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Well I wasn't going to be playing this today seeing as how ME2 hit. But my 360 died completely this afternoon, so I logged into ST:O. There is some pretty cool little end of beta stuff going on. Spacedock is flooded with borg which is kinda neat. I didn't see any cubes assaulting from outside, but I might have missed them. I might be playing early start if I can't find a solution to my 360 dilemma. Quote
Fit For Natalie Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Borg ships are wanderign around as Deep Space Encounters. Klingon players are now wandering around Federation space, but they're being slaughtered by spawn campers. Quote
David Hingtgen Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 I saw the mass fleet gatherings at K7 and Earth in prep for the Klingon invasion, but ME 2 arrived before it happened, so I logged off. I took hundreds of screen caps during the beta---including kaio and me fighting off Romulans last night. Quote

I took hundreds of screen caps during the beta---including kaio and me fighting off Romulans last night. Hundreds? Wow. I think I took 47 total. Thing is (for me at least) shields show up during combat, so they don't look as good as wallpapers. So I got a few shots of the Executor buzzing some "landmarks" like DS9 and Earth, and I made sure to grab some of her just cruising around from a bunch of different angles, but the thing is that after you do that, there's not a lot else to look at. It's more "what color is the space dust in this system?". But yeah, Mass Effect. Finally got time to play it. Quote
Dangaioh Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 I also made a new capt... his name Obvious, the ship USS Vague. Quote

Warmaker Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Last night I got to Lieutenant / Lv6, Blood of the Warrior. All the time I had left before having to go to sleep was rolling a Klingon. Wanted to play a bit more on last day of Beta but work wasn't having it. For Live, I want a Constitution-class Refit Cruiser for my goodie-two-shoes-Federation toon. For my Klingon, a BOP with Battle Cloak will do. Quote
Vostok 7 Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 Beta's over, fellas. I spent the last hour or so of the Armageddon relaxing away from the Borgpocalypse at Risa. We ended up having a huge group dancing and using fire extinguishers and shield generators and just generally making a ruckus. It was awesome. At the last minute we all saluted to the Undiscovered Country. It was an awesome moment. I have more pictures of the party I'll upload soon. Quote
