HG and Robotech Debates

The only aliens that were redesigned were the Kabarrian ambassador L'Ron (pictured in taksraven's avatar), and Haydonite ambassador Veidt, who went from looking like a really bad art deco bust moving of its own accord to the Hal 9000 in a red robe.*

YAY!! I LOVE my avatar.

So what did the Kabarrian redesign look like. (Is that the one where they now just look like bears/wolves, whatever??)

They say no politics here, but bloody hell, my avatar is political!!

edit: OOPS, just took it to page 33.

Can't find an easily-accessible picture online, but yeah... the Tommy Yune redesign of Ambassador L'Ron was basically a bear with a slightly more human shape in a big red robe.

EDIT: Found one... courtesy of Roboblog III: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1956/14...RELUDE_1_19.jpg

Okay, since Tommy Yune can't design a decent Veritech, maybe they can ask Tatsunoko's permission to use the 2007 update of the Legioss for the Shadow Rising feature. They can put it as an experimental Veritech with limited production run and given only to elite squads for testing.

Come to think of it, that's a good idea for a fanfiction. :)

What 2007 update of the Legioss?

I do like certain aspects of the story. I don't expect the fools at HG to actually to take a sensible path that would lead to profit and success... I'm just pointing out the possibility.

I've been reading various blogs through the net, and it seems that the C&D that HG sent the UEG guys is kinda backfiring. People I never expected to confess their disgust for HG's treatment of Robotech and the fans, are now being echoed everywhere. As more negative comments flow in through various sites and realms, I wonder how direct this will be on the idea of a live action movie? If you put yourself in the shoes of someone making decisions to finance or not finance a Robotech film, would the hordes of negative comments about the franchise that pop up question your decision, or would those be things you'd overlook and outweigh them with what Robotech once was? Maybe this is what they were planning for their 25 year anniversary.

If Movie studio's listened to fan outrage, there would have been no summer blockbusters in the last 3 years alone :) The movie will be canceled on the merits of its total lack of marketablility alone, unfortunately for HG, they're a few years to late. That is unless they can get that company that made Transmorphers to do it.

TONS of negative comments didn't stop the new Battlestar Galactica...

Maybe the best thing that could happen for the RLAM is if Tobey McGuire comes out and says, "All you old fans, DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE." ^_^

No the best thing that could happen would be to cancel the movie and move on to something with a larger fanbase.

WB will probably decide to do a Roadbots movie instead of trying to muddle through the mess that is Robotech.

Or even Gobots. If it's just a matter of trying to get some of the profits Transformers is reaping - then a Gobots movie makes sense - mainly because Transformers fans WILL go see it - I know I would. It's the same principle. Even though everybody always laughs as Gobots, if it DID get a big screen - then it would have instant recognition amongst Transformers fans who would probably see it just for fun.

Gobots, now there's a franchise I could standby!!! LOL

As for BSG, it didn't have a negative outpouring of fans complaining about the franchise before the new show was out. Most of the negative comments came out afterwards, comparing it to a whore house in space and all that. Nevertheless, I don't recall them screwing over fans like HG has done. Even though some series gone LAM have their quirks, they at least try to keep a good rapport with the fanbase. It doesn't seem to be the case here, and I wonder if this is stuff that could break the hopes and dreams of HG's LAM of Robotech. Speculative, I know, but just throwing it out there.

I beg to differ. As soon as word got out that Starbuck was going to be a woman, the fans of the old show went ballistic. Apparently, Edward James Olmos got so much hate mail before the miniseries even aired that he told the fans to stop writing him, and not to watch the show.

RDM now says that that was the best thing to say (since he had been trying to appease the rage, to no avail), but I'm sure he was horrified at the time.

Yes, there was a LOT of negative press and fan noise b4 the series started up, esp about the fact that Starbuck was a woman.

Here is the quote and some more info......

"Please don't watch this program. Buy yourself the new DVDs that they're putting out of the old episodes, and

whenever we come on, just put that one in. Trust me. Don't watch it.

If you're a real, real staunch Battlestar Galactica person, please don't watch it." - Edward James Olmos

From the moment this show was announced in the form that it takes, people knew that it would be divisive. To update a show isn't new. When Star Trek: The Next Generation was announced, many fans of the original series questioned whether the new show would be faithful to the original programme that inspired it. History would go on to prove that it indeed would be not only successful, but faithful to the storylines and ethos of the original programme and the Star Trek programmes in all their incarnations have been consistent (within reason as there were at times mistakes) to both the storylines and history. Sadly, this is not the case here. In an attempt to make the show relevant to a newer audience, the show's creators have done a terrible thing: they have disregarded the tone, character, storyline and intent of the original show. In an attempt to make it fresh and new, they have discarded the very things that made the show the cult success that it has become, and have discarded the loyal and evangelical fans of the programme in the process. As the statement from Edward James Olmos indicates, this is not your dad's Battlestar Galactica. All this said, this would have to be the finest filmed for television science fiction that I have ever seen. As a fan of the original series, part of me wishes that it wasn't.

Thats from the MichaelDVD website and I think it pretty much backs up what Gubaba said....

And, uh, Uxi and Moly, I can't believe you guys are trying to figure out how to continue Robotech...what's the point? Just an intellectual exercise...?

Nor can I... particularly since they're attempting to talk out a rationale for a do-over on Robotech II: the Sentinels, a Robotech story concept so piss-dribblingly awful that even the most devout Robotech fans generally label it one of the worst mistakes in the franchise's history. So long as they're trying to make it fit with the rest of Robotech the only ways to make reworking Sentinels work are to either throw out Shadow Chronicles or pound nails into your cranium until the plot holes and weak writing don't matter anymore.

I do like certain aspects of the story. I don't expect the fools at HG to actually to take a sensible path that would lead to profit and success... I'm just pointing out the possibility.

Y'know... even on some Robotech boards a statement like this about Sentinels would be considered grounds for being sectioned under whatever your local mental health act is.

You expected it not to? Pretty much as soon as I heard the news that Harmony Gold's lawyers had thrown a cease and desist order at a bunch of amateurs making a fan-film, I figured it would cause at least a momentary resurgence in the anti-Harmony Gold feeling on the net once word started to get around. Some folks are still smarting over Harmony Gold farting over that BattleTech artbook and the most recent MechWarrior game, which probably didn't help much at all. It's not like anti-Robotech sentiment out there is new on the web... even if you discount the fact that they're hated for undermining Macross and BattleTech/MechWarrior, there's all the scorn directed at RT for being an Americanized rewrite and leeching off the success of other shows instead of coming up with new material of its own, and the inevitable fan groups complaining about how Tommy Yune is the cancer that's killing Robotech.

This latest batch of anti-Harmony Gold bitching just made the pool of people with a grudge against Harmony Gold a wee bit bigger. No doubt Harmony Gold will blow it off as a temporary thing, the same way they did the whole brouhaha over their interfering with MechWarrior 5 because of an old design that looks like a Tomahawk being used.

I wonder how direct this will be on the idea of a live action movie? If you put yourself in the shoes of someone making decisions to finance or not finance a Robotech film, would the hordes of negative comments about the franchise that pop up question your decision, or would those be things you'd overlook and outweigh them with what Robotech once was?

Assuming that the people in charge at Warner and Maguire Entertainment haven't just been giving each other piggy-back rides and tossing cards into a hat for the last two years or so, they probably already know about the feeling of general antipathy anime fans have for Robotech, and/or its horribly bad reputation... unless they're stupid enough to have not bothered to do their homework, which doesn't seem entirely likely. All the same, it would make my day if Warner or Maguire Ent. took Harmony Gold to court later for fraudulent misrepresentation of the current state of the IP.

Was the HG C&D directed at the Mechwarrior 5 trailer successful??

And whats this about a Battletech artbook stirring up the wrath of HG? I must have missed that one....

As far as I can tell... yes, it was. It looks like the developer and/or publisher bowed to their wishes rather than try to fight things out in court.

It kind of got missed in the whole brouhaha over MechWarrior 5, but initially what drew Harmony Gold's attention to that whole franchise again was the announcement that there was going to be a BattleTech artbook coming out and that it'd feature the return of "the unseen" mecha that were untouchable after the Harmony Gold v. FASA settlement (which they apparently didn't know anything about). The current licenseholder, Catalyst Game Labs, bowed to Harmony Gold's wishes with almost indecent haste and pulled the disputed art from the publication.

...why not? The entire Robotech community fanbase is BUILT on the premise of being completely ignorent of everything other then their own conception of what Robotech is...

I expect no effect in regards to the LAM. But as you said, I do expect more anti-HG sentiment. HG will blow this off because they don't care about the old fandom.

Because, of course, they're picking up SO MANY NEW FANS with each day that passes, right? :p

(Although, admittedly, I've seen more than one person write, "I'm a die-hard anime fan, and I think Robotech is great," which, ten or fifteen years ago, would've gotten you kicked out of any anime club you tried to join.)

I think these days individual fans are becoming more and more replaceable to the creative team to meet certain goals in exchange for very little risk.

I'm sure that those at HG follow the usual pattern for projects......

Phases of a Project:

1 -- Exultation

2 -- Disenchantment

3 -- Search for the Guilty

4 -- Punishment of the Innocent

5 -- Praise for the Uninvolved

- Anon

Thats certainly the pattern that is followed at my workplace.

Most of the ruckus was due to some of the older fans feeling indignant that the new show wasn't hewing to the conventions created in the original show. It was the rose tinted helmet visors that clouded a lot of opinions. But in the case of Robotech, most who ended up going into anime from Robotech find it not noteworthy in comparison to more important shows like Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop. Robin Williams is definitely not a fan of Robotech, nor do most people even remember it in some detail. What's happening in Robotech fandom is a sort of vicious cannibalism of the fanbase.

Oooh...
, too!

Don't even think about it... a My Little Pony LAM would make my girlfriend so happy, and I'd be forced to watch it with her...*the horror*. I keep hoping against all hope that her VHS tapes will give out some day, along with her JEM tapes... (yes, there are things worse then Robotech)

Well I did now...and true, it's hilarious :p (Still, just the idea of a "true to the original series" one fills me with dread :D)
