VFTF1 Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Ok ... watching Attack of the Clones now...and paused it to nominate this lame brained line: "Take these, and be careful: they're very posionous." Really? They're not just poisonous. They're VERY poisonous!! 'Cause..you know...if they were poisonous - then she wouldn't need to be careful... but...what with them being VERY poisonous...well.... VFTF1 Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Watching more Star Wars...I'm starting to realize why Sir Alec couldn't stand uttering his lines...although...he was smart asking for 2% of the profits from the franchise...forever ... Anyways... I nominate this - from New Hope: Tarkin: Terminate her immediately!! ...Silence... Darth Vader: Waves hand around. I swear to the juju gods - the dubbing of Vader's voice over is so poor, that apparently they missed this part. Clearly Vader (aka the Scottish guy in the suit) was STILL talking when they cut the scene -but the dub just places the voice elsewhere. That scene was majorly rushed. In fact - they have a tendency to dub over everything and everyone...Stormtroopers...red shirts...Lucas just seemed to love the dub function when making this movie But the scene above looks really funny because it ends with Vader making what is clearly a pointless out of context gesticulation towards Tarkin. I'm not sure that counts as a "line" ... but... it's not something I want to see in sci fi shows ...unless they come from the 70s! Pete Quote
VFTF1 Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Wow "Newt...my name's Newt. Nobody calls me Rebecca except my brother..." Should be followed by: "That is, except my brother unless we're talking about the DVD edition with the full footage, because in that edition of the movie, my brother calls me Newt when I wake him up to say "they've been gone a long time" ... he tells me not to worry and calls me Newt...but...you didn't see that in the cinema..." Damn - I shouldn't watch things a thousand times.... Pete Quote

Pete I seem to recall that scene made more sense in the novelisation, where Leias termination is put on hold because she might still be of some use or something. Also, David Prowse, the "body" of Darth Vader, is from Bristol. He goes "Oo-aar" not "Och aye the noo"... (to be fair, I also seem to recall on one of the DVDs someone describing Prowses accent as a "Yorkshire" accent...!) Edited January 28, 2010 by F-ZeroOne Quote

Oh Tarkin says the same thing in the movie. That's not the problem. The problem is that once they're done talking, Darth Vader walks up to him and gesticulates his hands wildly for about 3 seconds before cutting to the next scene. I think that originally, Lucas had the scene lasting longer. Notice also that when Tarkin says his line, his back is turned to us. I think both his and Vader's lines are dubbed. Initially, maybe Vader was more animated in his arguments or something - thus visually he's still waving his arms even though the dialogue doesn't fit Anyways... here's another one: "What is that?" "I don't know." "Proceed inside." I'm watching Aliens, as if you guys couldn't tell Pete Quote
Ghost Train Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 I have an intense dislike for Computer UI's that emblazon "ACCESS DENIED" in a dialog box surrounding by a big red intermittently flashing border to emphasize how serious BEING DENIED ACCESS is. Imagine getting that every time you mistyped your password... yes yes I'm aware of 3-strike-before-lockout rules. Quote
electric indigo Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) I also wouldn't want to see "ACCESS GRANTED" in 400pt letters on my screen everytime I log in... edit: Now that I think about it, it would be cool to have the screen go red and read "PURGE" when you empty the trashcan. Pete I think that long shot you are talking about might originally have been from another scene. The whole movie was a rushed production working on a limited budget (for the time). But its little things like that that help make the film more charming (I'm really love the bit when the door opens and the stormtroopers rush in and one hits his head on the door in the process, great stuff.) Dubbing helped a lot with filming, sound effects and editing. I heard once that about 70% of the total dialogue in the film is dubbed or overdubbed. And I would watch it over The Phantom Menace anyday. Quote

sketchley Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I believe it's 100% of the dialogue is redone. It's called ADR. The main reason being because of all the sounds on set, it's nigh impossible to clearly record the actors voices. Though, SWIV does have the fun story of being total crap until they hired the editor and focused things down to what we know it as. In short, a lot of long-windedness was cut out, and some shots were expanded right up to the point just after the director yelled cut and the camera stopped (Obi-wan after cutting off the hand in the bar). Another scene that comes to mind is the one of the sand-person raising and lowering his weapon after knocking Luke unconcious. That particular shot was played forward and reverse to get the repeated arm raising. So yeah, SWIV was originally a totally different thing, and we have to thank the editor for making it into the excellent piece of film that it became. Quote

He just needed someone else to trim it down to something fun. Thats the one thing about that massive SW documentary that came out with the first DVD box set years ago. Despite the fact that a lot of it was self-congratulatory, there were quite a few moments of introspection, self-criticism, and "George Lucas is not really god" At least for episode 4. Lots of praise for the director of Empire Strikes Back, (with good cause, best SW of the lot, and its only an intermediate story), and I think that they were STILL kicking the late Richard Marquand around a bit for ROTJ. (At the time of the release of ROTJ he copped a lot of criticisms for perceived problems with the film, when in fact the direction was fine it was just that a lot of the scripting sucked compared to the others. Richard Marquand was made to carry the can for most of the criticisms and I don't think that was fair.) David Lynch was going to direct ROTJ at one stage, imagine how that would have turned out. Is there anywhere that Lucas or anybody else has been critical of the prequel trilogy?? I doubt it, but would like to know if there is.... Taksraven Quote

I found the antics of the cast quite eye opening (after shooting the scene, badgering Lucas if he got the shot). I especially found Harrison Ford's comments enlightening - from a writer's point of view. Carrie Fisher sums it up susinctly, but Harrison Ford says it in a way that had me wondering how the comments made it onto the DVD! Quote

And by watching it you can see how at ease Lucas wasn't with people back then, and probably isn't now. He simply isn't a "people" director, but he is a good technical one though. I seem to remember having heard an anecdote once that when Francis Ford Coppola was thinking he wouldn't survive the production of Apocalypse now, he made a list of other directors who could pick up the project and finish it. I seem to remember that he thought that Lucas would be OK but wouldn't be good with people. I might be wrong with this story, so corrections would be appreciated if needed... Taksraven Quote

VFTF1 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 This probably isn't the best time to announce that I am a fan of the Phantom Menace, is it? But I am. I love the light saber duel with Darth Maul. I mean - come on - after almost 20 years of "the greatest" lighsaber duels being what we saw in ESB and ROTJ.... I remember being totally blown away by this duel (and at the time thinking "doesn't this contradict the future though...I mean...Vader and Luke are supposedly more powerful than these guys... but my friend explained to me that actually the Old Republic had the most powerful Jedi, of which Vader used to be one - but what we see in the IV-VI SW films are remnants...relics...weak old men, weak old hermits, a dude who can barely walk because he has prosthetic legs and arms.... and a kid who - talented as he is...is still learning at a late age ad under conditions which are choppy and not the ideal conditions of the Jedi Academi).... Anyways - I really liked it. I thought making Anakin such a nice kid was great, I liked watching young Obi Wan. I thought Quai Gon was well played. The story was fantastic, as was the pacing. The Pod Race scene does NOT lend its self to re-watching - I'll grant that - but for what it was - it was GREAT in the movie. Jar Jar seems to be the bane of everybody's memories/experiences... but... come on... the Ewoks were worse, and yet ROTJ still managed to be watchable and good. Every movie that tries to have such a huge scope of characters is going to have something or someone that you don't like... I didn't like Dex in Clones either, but doesn't mean I thought the movie sucked. I guess I'm a luke warm fan. I like all the Star Wars movies. I never was hardcore into it - but I like the films. TPM recaptures the feelings felt when watching the original 3: it's fun. And it's topped off with an actual, real sword fight (sure they painted neon over the weapons, but whatever). You know, the type where you blink and you miss something important. Anyhow, the weakest part of TPM is that it has too much exposition. AotC makes up for it, by putting that exposition to good use, and steadily builds up to a climax. RotS, on the other hand, is quite anti-climactic. I understand how to make it fit into the greater storyline certain events must come to pass. Nevertheless, with the largest action sequence at the start of the movie... and the climactic sword battle two-thirds of the way through... (yes, yes, I know they were going for the artistry of mirroring RofJ. Nevertheless...) EDIT: funny thing about TPM is that amongst non-ST fans, it's the one they like the most. Call it the cute kid factor. Edited January 29, 2010 by sketchley Quote
