RedWolf
Basara is 21?? I'm surprised there's even a date of birth for him. I thought his origins were shrouded in mistery? I suppose they have a census database. It is Earth after all not some backwater colony. His hometown, the only one who remembers him is the geezer who plays golf. Nothing on his folks. I don't think even Ray realizes he had met him before till he invited him to form a band. (He was drunk) Veffidas certainly remembers him as that odd guy singing after she put down (literally) a suitor of hers.
Freiflug88
[*]Is it ever explained why Gamlin's hair is modeled after Wolvarene? I wouldn't be surprised if the Macross 7 crew were paying a small homage to the X-men animated series which was dubbed and broadcasted in Japan. The series debutted in October 1992 in the USA and by the time M7 rolled out two years later it is very likely that Japanese viewers had already seen the first season of X-men and were familar with Wolverine's hairdo and the Xmen named Gambit. Sort of. The first episode of Plus was released on August 25, 1994. Macross 7 debuted on October 16 of the same year. Plus Episode 2 came out on January 1, 1995, between episodes 11 and 12 of Mac7. Plus episode 3 was released on Feburary 21 (between episodes 18 and 19 of Mac7) and the final episode was June 25 (same day as Mac7 episode 36). So viewers watching at the time would've seen the Fire Valkyrie BEFORE they saw the YF-19, and by the second episode of Plus, were probably ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that the 19 would win Project Supernova. Interesting. That puts a whole new spin on things. I had always thought that M+ was completely done and already completely aired when they made M7. Marzan
It doesn't matter what the creator or the official source says about their age. Bassara looks like he's 9 years old, and this whole show is about exploitation of child labor! You better lesson to me kaz I now wat im talknig boat. Not necessarily, remember we catch a glimpse of it in all three modes as a hologram projection during Millard's orientation in the first ep of MPlus. Uxi
I always thought Macross ages were a bit on the ridiculous side. Roy Focker was about the only one who doesn't need to be adjusted upwards. Hikaru is just too young, as are Max and Kakizaki. The worst offender is Misa, though. For her to be taken seriously, she should be at least mid 20s IMO. IIRC, I was thinking at least 3-4 years added to each. Roy: 29 Misa: 19: Make her 24 or 25 and I find her character/reputation/skill set to be far more believable. Hikaru: 16 - make him 19 or 20 and I find it far more believable. Minmay: 15-16 - Ok, especially given story. Max: 16 - I'd probably say 23 or 24 would be better. Milia: whatever, she's cloned and my suspension of disbelief isn't challenged given her need for programming and/or Zentradi / Meltran training regimen Similarly, Gamlin should be at least 23 or 24. I can buy Mylene at 14-15 and Basara at 21. A little bit older for Basara would be better.

I think most of us saw Plus first...I know I did. I got Plus as it came out in the US, and kept waiting and waiting for someone to release Mac7, until I realized I could just go to the video stores in Little Tokyo and rent the VHS tapes. That was, like, 1996 or thereabouts. And it wasn't until MUCH later that I saw it with subs.

Freiflug88
Have you seen the remastered verison of Plus or only the Manga release? I always had this feeling that Plus and Seven were really really old because the video quality on the original rips were absoultely horrible. Then I saw the remastered verisons and it was like watching a whole new anime for the first time because the difference in video quality was so striking. So yeah, if you have only seen the horrible manga release of Macross Plus then its going to look like a really faded old anime compared to the video quality of the crisp clear Macross 7 remastered release. Marzan
Its saturday and we have no episode review yet which means Pete is still experiencing technical difficulties. So here I go with my first review... EPISODE 7- SUMMER ACCIDENT It's a typical anime theme to have a beach episode and since no preceding Macross had done it, M7 wandered into the unknown and had a beach episode...in space. This is episode is in my view absoluely priceless if anything else for giving us the chance to see Ray fishing in a blue silk robe and Veffidas wearing shades. Hold the laughs, since they actually handled the whole thing quite well, although I'm sure that some of the more scientifically minded people in these forums will later tell us how transporting all that water on a spaceship for recreation purposes is a lode of whishwash...Anyway... Mylene and Basara's cat and mouse dynamic has really started to develop. Mylene once again is showing that she's trying to be a professional by using her network to land Fire Bomber a gig at the expensive marine resort ship Riviera. And Basara displays his unyielding views, he does things his way and refusing to play any ballads for the glitzy crowd at the concert. I loved when he tell Mylene "Our music isn't for people who just want to kill time". I feel that it's the kind of line that a true musician would have used. 'Not surprisingly', Gamlin is also at the riviera and has a date with Mylene. In my view, Mylene inadvertently reveals the depth of her burgeoning feelings for Basara by encouraging Gamlin to "beat the living daylights out of him". I don't think that a normal "bandmate" relationship would cause that depth of feelings...Luckily for us, Gamlin actually shows that he's not a war nut and thinks Mylene's statement is a tad too extreme. Outside the ship, the U.N Spacy is trying to get its stuff together by deploying escorts to all the ships in the fleet, but as usual and under attack by the still at this point unknown Proto-devlin, they get creamed pretty quickly and only the intervention of Gamlin and Diamond Force turns the tide in their favour. More importantly though, during the attack Gamlin sees Mylene and Basara together and he starts questioning what their relationship may be. I don't think that at this point Gamlin has any strong affection for the little bass player, but is he then intrigued by her or just wants to find out about Basara? In any case, he missed out on saving her when she and Basara get trapped. I think Basara once again shows a bit more level headedness than people give him credit for when he and Mylene get trapped in the freezing conditions. By encouraging her to sing , he distracted her from the discomfort caused by the sub-zero temperatures. And then he exhibited remarkable resourcefulness by using a ventilation shaft to get to his Valk and break Mylene out of her icy prison. Not bad. At the end we actually find out that the crowd at the concert actually really enjoyed Fire Bomber's concert and want another one. Go and figure... Not a bad episode all in all. And Basara in shorts? Mylene in bikini? Veffidas in a dominatrix one piece swimsuit? Not too shabby. But I do have to insist on Ray's blue silk robe. Priceless... Right. There it is. Not really a review but more of a series of uncoordinated thoughts. But at least we can get the ball rolling...
Master Dex
Why Marzan, whatever could you mean by that comment in your first paragraph? Heheh, actually I have no problem with a beach resort ship. Though in all truthfully they even said in the episode the water was use for a lot more than just recreation, it was also for Science!!! and fish, they farmed fish there too. More on some science stuff in a bit. I'd like to note first, give me a woot for first episode without that dreadful opening explanation of the show. After 7 episodes they finally realized we understand the basic premise. It is a good episode. Someone noted earlier this isn't the season for a beach episode, but remember our friends from down under, it is summer there after all, lol. I have to say I'm not much of a beach fan, but it works for some people. I have to say though, Michael's a perv. Whether he admits it or not, he is a large 30 something year old man staring at 14 year old Mylene with binoculars, and he is staring in particular areas too. Though in his defense there was a lot of Mylene fan service in this episode. I guess even though it isn't standard, anyone can enjoy Fire Bomber music at a nice sit down restaurant. Though Basara's personal stalker, the Flower Girl, doesn't care where it is I suppose. Speaking of stalking in this episode, there was a lot. I wonder if Gepelnitch is purposefully sending attackers after the same ships Fire Bomber happens to be on. If not then Gigil has some explaining to do. Didn't matter in this case though, Basara was too busy saving Mylene to do his thing during the attack. However Gamlin had it quite covered, looking very stoic, of course his mind was elsewhere. Despite that though it seems putting Gamlin in the seat is the only way a VF-11 can kick ass. Guess it isn't the plane, but that UN Spacey has a nasty habit of only putting good pilots in the good planes. Well they are more expensive I suppose, and Macross 7 clearly has unlimited supplies of VF-11s. I should be keeping count of how many have been destroyed but it would be easier to count how many haven't, as of now: 1. Ok, science time for you hungry masses! That iris dome shield on the Riviera is cool. Nothing much about science there; I just like irises, both on an off Stargates. To touch on Marzan's low faith on me liking mass water transportation (lol). I mentioned earlier that it is used for a lot of things besides recreation so it serves good purposes. Like fish farming! People can fish. One might think that there would be a limited supply of fish in the water but really a civilization this advanced can just clone fish to repopulate the area for people to, well, fish. Hell we know they have cloning technology. As for the water, I certainly have nothing against a ship transporting a lot of water. However it is true it doesn't need to carry it like that all the time. I'm willing to bet when the Riviera resort is closes (if it closes, it has to at some point), that the water is drained into holding tanks to make it easier to store. It could even be separated into base molecules and stored as hydrogen and oxygen which is more compressible. We can't do that quite yet but in the future it is possible indeed I'm sure. Makes cleaning the ship's ocean easier I bet. I'd like to note that when the attack begins the bridge bunnies inform the Riviera captain that the pressure and the temperature in a certain section are dropping. That is impressive really. Now of course it is colder in lower pressures hence many a snowy mountain top because there is less interaction of the air molecules to create heat. Climate Control systems are an important thing on a space craft. Interestingly it is a fact that in lower pressures, liquids can boil at lower temperatures (in zero absolute pressure (space) water boils at room temperatures); this is called cavitation. However the temperature dropped as well so stuff wasn't boiling, but I have to wonder if it would take even lower temperature for water vapor to freeze then. It may be really cold but you might still only have liquid water if the pressure was low enough. In this case though it seems the pressure and temperature drop were not symmetrical, temperature seemed to drop more than pressure. So a quirky climate control system ended up simulating high altitudes on Earth instead of a lot of crazy other problems. The pressure obviously didn't get too low since Basara and Mylene didn't die from inability to breathe or other far worse low pressure related deaths (there are a few). So that was lucky. Also the VF-19 warmed up rather quick, a pair of thermonuclear reactors will do that though. Definitely the best call going for the valk and taking Mylene inside. All in all, a fun episode. This I swear by the soft folds of Ray's blue silk robe... Just making it clear that my knowledge of physics and chemistry is so limited that I run the risk of saying something completely stupid if I stay on the science subject... Interesting to read your take on the many uses of water on that particular ship. In Frontier they never reallly go into detail, but I suppose that the large mass of water on Frontier 1 was also the ships water supply? Good point Master Dex about the attacks being directed to wherever Fire Bomber is located. You would have thought that the "genius" Maximilian Jenus would have worked it out by now... Michael is a total perv. Checking out the curves of your bosses 14 year old daughter is a total no-no. Then again it's probably his way of getting payback against the very demanding mayor of his... And I'm I the only one who would have liked to see more of the Riviera's bridge bunnies?

And I'm I the only one who would have liked to see more of the Riviera's bridge bunnies? Well there were bodies of water on other islands in the Frontier fleet. That large mass of water might be harder to maintain. Probably an active cleaning system so it doesn't have to drain. While on that I was thinking about the waves of water on the ship. Clearly they were generated but they stopped moving when the power went out. That is unusual for water. However these ships probably have a really strong inertial damping system. I keep thinking what if Frontier Island 1 put the brakes on and all that water washed over the land in front of it. So clearly there is some inertial damping so that kind of thing doesn't happen (or people don't fly into the walls). Control of gravity can make that possible. Create an artificial gravity force opposite the force of inertia and it cancels out. This is just theory though. Also don't worry about if you have a limited knowledge of sciences. It isn't for everyone. I know more about physics than I do chemistry so I can't speak much for chemistry.

It is actually an interesting take, that I never thought of until I saw your comment. In fact I was about to make a sarcastic remark that the Macross crew was just fans of the music of "Wolverine the Musical" until I realized that X-men the animated Series debuted in Japan in the early 90s as well. I have also found some interesting screen grabs of X-men and Macross 7. And of course the X-Men LOVE TRIANGLE! I am sure I will find more X-men/Macross7 comparions as we get further along in the series. Not a bad episode all in all. And Basara in shorts? Mylene in bikini? Someone should warn Macross parents that if they name their boys "Michael" they will be destined to grow into a big blonde perverted dork with glasses. In Michael's defense we all know the real reason he was checking her out was to give the viewers fan service. It is unfortunate that he is stuck as the Mayor's aide. With his humougus muscular built he could have easily landed a job as a boucner and be surrounded with hot girls in night clubs, until he goes crazy from hearing the same techno remix of ""Planet Dance" over and over that is... Yeah, it does have some resemblance, but for everything that resembles the M7 Love triangle the X-men triangle has something that is a bit different . For instance when would you ever see Basara and Mylene like this? Come to think of it though Love triangle or not the X-men mythos with its heros and villains painted in shades of grey, conflicts between man and mutant, and the rivalry/friendship dynamics with Professor Xavier and Magneto is the closets thing in American comics to Kawamori's ideology that I know of. VFTF1
Do use Firefox with "No Script" and update your "hosts" file to block connections to known malware by chance? Yeah - I did all that. I used Firefox and Firefox DID block the website eventually - however, the problem is, Firefox only blocks things once they are reported. This particular website looked like any other - it's just a fan site and somebody hacked their server and basically infected the computers of all the members. I'm not really clear on what followed since I - not surprisingly - haven't gone back to that website In any case - it's just bad luck is all. I think they must have been using a pretty lousy security system to let something like that happen... particularly given that at least according to them the local Hasbro branch was providing the servers... so you'd think they'd be safe ...but oh well... What ever... my anime-watching days are over until next year (sounds like a long time, but I think by January 3rd I'll be up and running again!) Meanwhile - it's kind of nice to see a conversation go its' own way without me. I particularly like the discussion about the water on the Riviera - very nice. I'll comment more when I have a chance to catch up. In any event - Marzan, Dex, and anybody else who is active - thank you for keeping the thread alive and please keep it going until I can come back to writing a weekly review. Thanks guys! Pete Well I am going on holiday this thursday (and into the wild) so I'll be gone from the forum for a week or so. But I'll be back on the 2nd to catch up on all necessary chapters... VFTF1
Well - I guess I can let you guys take a break from your responsibilities towards Anim Spiritia then! Maybe we can all "officially" agree to not watch any more Macross 7 until the new year? The second Friday of January would, I think, be ideal. The first Friday most of us will be hung over (I hope) ... unless I've got my dates mixed up (possible). This will also give those of our friends who need to catch up (aahh...ahhh...aaaCCHOOOgubabaOOOOO!!!) a chance to perhaps catch up with the rest of us? ... Just a suggestion. Obviously if people wanna keep watching and writing - have at But maybe we can take this occasion to take a break and come back to the serious business of analyzing a cartoon about a rock and roll band battling space monsters with music after the holidays? shiroth
You know who I feel was missing out on beach attire? Flower Girl! It would have been nice to see her in a white swimsuit instead of that white victoria outfit that she always wears. She has more important matters on her mind, so she has no time to be picking out beach attire. Episode 07 is just so much fun to watch. There's so many great scenes, that i just have to make a list. -It's hilarious how much Ray just wants to get out there and fish. -Beach attire Mylene is really nice on the eyes, especially with those adorable feet on show. -An angry beach attired Mylene complaining about Basara is also adorable. -Thumbs up to Michalle for checking out Mylene with the camera. -Awesome bridge bunnies who only appear for one episode are that awesome they get their own eyecatch. -Epic older audience know how to rock. BOMBA! Would be awesome to watch episode 08 on Christmas day, though if not i'll do it the day after. It is the first episode where you know who speaks after all.
