I just ran a google image search for "Alien tractor beam" and it was the second image that showed up and of course the first one that caught my eye... I also had no idea it was a "mainstay cornerstone of British life," according to my Firefox web server flag app the website is actually being hosted in America.

Okay Episode 8 finally:

Basara is tinkering with those hated missiles before Ray comes in and has a chat with him. As Ray points out Basera was only able to save Rex, Gamlin, and the gang because of the missiles and he should leave them in because its better to have them just in case then to be without them in a time of need like carrying an umbrella for a raining day. Though Basera argues that he likes to get soaked in the rain, he apparently leaves them in.

Then at a restraunt an evil fountain soda-delvin attacks Mylene out of nowhere only to be thwarted by:

gamlinlick.png

No unfortunately its just Gamlin making a fool of himself while having lunch with Mylene at a nice restrauant. Notice though how Mylene is dressed up all nice, but still has those few front hairs sticking up put of place and her hairy pet Gubbaba id no where in sight as she puts on an uncomforabtle false front to Gamlin.

Back at the Mansion and Ray tells Basera about a recording deal they have later in the afternoon. Naturally the free spirited Basera isn't pleased about this.

I also have to say at their casual date poor Gamlin plays a complete tool. Not only does he give Mylene a present, but he blirts out that its a Kimino, called a “Tsumugi” and its supposed to calme the hearts of people, before even handing the wrapped gift box to her . To top it off he also has to ask her to please wear it the next time they meet before seeing her off with a salute.

Then he runs into his boss, the Diamond Force Captain, who walks in with Max's two bridge bunnies after he laughs that he is much too old for Mylene. One has to wonder though what the divorced Genuis would think of the Captain pimping his two bridge bunnies.

Cut to the band performing in the recording studio and the ambiguously gay manager Honey, absolutely hates there Planet Dance performance. Saying that its too full of passion and that he only wants to deal with a fashionable common melodies that everyone can appreciate. Basera says he is out of luck and storms outside to be alone.

Outside poor Flower Girl misses her chance as Mylene literally shoves her out of the way.to complain to Basera how important the recording is to Fire Bomber reaching out. Of course she doesn't understand Basera's missile crisis and how he seeks a “Bomber” sound that is louder then missiles. Basera walks off yet again leaving Mylene, Ray, and us the audience stunned to hear Veridas actually speak! Offering the wisdom that arguing and being rational with Basera is pointless...

News report more spritra drained victims pile up as the military has been unsuccessful in capturing the perpetrators as more citizens become afraid. Then again I wouldn't feel safe at all if my military and police utter failed to ever notice 7-foot tall guys with trenchcoats, purple mouthguards, and black visors roaming the city streets . In other fasihion news Mylene ponders what to with Basera in the iconic yellow sundress like two years before Asuka made it a recognizable fashion statement in Episode 8 of Evangelion! And to think almost a year ago after Episode 7 of Frontier aired fans everywhere were citing Sheryl as pulling the best Asuka impersonation ever. Some one tell those EVA geeks and the cosplay fashion police about this injustice.

vlcsnap2010010410h12m18.png

vlcsnap2010010410h07m58.png

Back to the show. After the commerical break Mylene is able to convince Basera to give the recording another shot tomorrow, guess that Kimino must really work after all. Then for the first time we get to hear about Gepelnitch's plan to herd Macross 7 into a Spritual farm, but of course Gigile doesn't care and just wants to enjoy the hunt.

Back at the recording studio tensions run high as Honey complains they need to get a decent recording now when of course the battle siren rings. Basera smiles at Mylene and just says “Bomber” before running out to battle. Naturally Honey is outraged while Ray plays it cool and tells them it will work out as he sets them up to record Basera's battle performance though the military channel. The typical stock footage battle ensures and Gigile retreats after Gamlin blows apart his gun, as Fire Bomber wraps up Planet Dance for their recording.

The Planet Dance recording quality itself is full of noise from the battle, but it still sounds “powerful and gutsy” to the sound techian. Just as Mylene gets all excited Honey chimes in that it will never sell to burst her bubble. Ray up to something as usual, says that is just Honey's opinion and gives her a wink moments before his ex Akiko comes in to buy the record from Honey so she can sell it under her label.

All the while Basera has to listen Gamlin smear the fact that his singing did nothing to affect the battle that the UN Spacey won. Leaving him even more enraged that he hasn't found his “Bomba” sound.

Man I think you are a little too hung up about the dress. I don't think there was any design to other characters wearing similar clothes, lol.

Hurrah, Freifugl has started the ball rolling on episode 8. Nice writeup and thanks for posting these Mylene pics. I have to confess that before it was mentioned here, I had'nt really made the whole Asuka/Mylene/Sheryl sundress connection...

Just a couple of things I noticed...

Something that struck me about this episode is how Gamlin is already changing from what we've seen in some of the earlier episodes. I remember how we were commenting on his fierce intensity (someone wrote that he reminded them of the De Niro character in Taxi Driver). Whereas in this episode we can see that Gamlin seems somewhat tentative and insecure, at least where his relationship with Mylene is concerned.

And we finally get to hear Veffidas' voice. I remember the first time I saw M7 how much it struck me to hear her. I had kind of formed the opinion that she was mute and wasn't meant to speak. And not only does she speak but it turns out that she's got quite a keen insight into her fellow Fire Bombers. Or at the very least she understands Basara and tries to help Mylene in dealing with him.

Honey's dislike of Fire Bomber's sound and his later sale of their masters tapes to Akiko, reminded me of the famous decision of a certain Decca Records producer called Dick Rowe who in 1961 refused to sign a group of 4 young musicians from Liverpool. ;)

Finally, this was the first of the M7 episodes that had an encore: a wonderful acoustic rendition of Totsukegi Love Heart. I don't know much of Basara's official biography, but it seems to me that during the course of this clip, he's on Earth, isn't he? I mean the way people are dressed and some fo the scenery indicate that Basara travelled through South America (Peru, Bolivia perhaps) in his youth. And is Basara's finding of his trademark glasses a metaphor for finding his mission in life or what??

Well I am conspiracy theorist that notices connections in everything. Honestly though when I watched this episode for the first time I completely missed the dress, but then I rewatched last week for the review and was like wait a minute that dress looks very familiar *rewind. Ah ha! So this is where the sundress is really from. Also the name is Freiflug not freifugl:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dgK6-oK8KY.

I have been trying to find this clip in the Macross 7 discs.

If you were watching the original Laser Disks or VHS tapes, you'd find one of these little "Macross 7 Plus" short films at the end of each one. This one was on Vol. 2, and since there were four episodes per LD, this one followed episode 8. Theoretically, they can be watched in any order, at pretty much any point in the series. Both of the remastered DVD box sets have a bonus disc, and all of the Macross 7 Plus shorts (and more) are collected on those.

Either aliens gave us a huge moon with saturn's rings and I didn't get the memo or its an Earth-like planet with a tall mountain out of the middle of nowhere that needs moving.

vlcsnap2010010819h27m58.th.png

As for the mystical glowing glasses in the vid they seemed to have moved across the edge of the horizon and created a almost as if they fell from the sky like the Macross in the opening of SDF  . If John Lenon's pair of glasses falling from the sky on an far off planet isn't the galaxy's way of calling Basera to sing for peace then I don't know what is.

My wife will be accompanying me on watching Macross 7, and I will be catching her up to ep. 8. We'll start again w/ ep.1, and move up to where we need to be. So, with me, add one more viewer.

did anyone notice Flower Girl is inside the train

she's obsessed

Finally tracking him down on Macross 7. She also did the same for Sheryl in the Macross Frontier manga.

Now why can't we have someone like her track down Minmay... Oh yeah there was already one.

But we don't know that particular Flower Girl was able to give her flowers to Minmay personally.

If she didn't imagine her boarding Megaroad-01 or the Flower Girl that we know inherited her will/spirit as there was regret on not managing to give flowers to Minmay.

But Basara wasn't even a celebrity yet then.

Flower Girl may be arguably his very first fan.

As for Sheryl Flower Girl or should I say Flower Lady could have sensed "

".

I don't think Sheryl ever met Basara but if I have to guess the first artist she had a crush on that visited Galaxy was Mylene. From what I extropolate from the Sheryl blog discussion.

Gamlin isn't surfing for porn he is just watching Gunbuster... for the plot, just like the rest of us do. I watched the OVAs for the first time the other day so of I figured I take a snapshot of it and photoshop it onto Gamlin's monitor for the joke, censored of course to be on the mods safe side.

Don't worry your mind isn't playing tricks on you and that pretty much sums up the scene, and yes it is in a much later episode.

Maybe they're related. The overwhelming need to hand over flowers to celebrities is a genetic trait...

Of course it all fits now... Megan Fox's flower boy will start a family and father M7's flower girl sometime in the future. Years from now in 2045 his daughter, our familiar flower girl, who will inherit his Megan Fox flower genes will have the overwhelming need to give flowers to Basera because... Basera is the son of Shia labeouf and Megan Fox!

Thanks to the power of MW & Jason, I've now got the shiny remaster with subs of Macross 7, BOMBA!!

So anyhoo, Accidentally watched an episode too far, because I forgot exactly where you guys were, but "Angel Night" is the first reveal at where the series is really heading. Gigil still quite pissed that Gepelnitch is being secretive about his plot, illuding to "dreams," just wants to go crack heads & steal spiritia. Meanwhile Mylene still naive to the bigger picture going on with Ray & Basara, once agian gets angry at Basara for invalidating her opinion on singing, i.e. she doesn't understand Basara's gruff way of telling her she's overthinking things, and decides to quite.

Now here's as very intersting subtext at this moment. Many tend to believe that Basara is a selfish closeminded idealist that only see's his way of doing things, and has no time for anyone else. "But," take a look at what's actually going on. Basara actually is fired up about Mylene's songs to, and care's about what she's putting into it. Hell, if all Basara cared about was the "Basara show," why would he even waste time with Mylene's solo vocals? As seen here, he's just trying to help her see the bigger picture, and get away from "Honey's" fashionable marketable way of playing. Bassara realizes full well that Mylene is an integral part of the band, so much so that he immediately accepts Ray's scolding, and goes after her. This being the first indication of the rough time they've had keeping bass players (later touched again on encore ep "On Stage."

Meanwhile sulking Mylene stumbles across Alice Holiday, a singer who's lot her passion because of that same marketing system Mylene keeps trying to adapt to. But something interesting happens. Just as the Varuta "coincidentally" target Alice to test Gepelnitch's theory about musicians having spiritia regeneration abilities, and oblivious to everyone except the Varuta, Mylene's passion to help re-inspire Alice actually regenrate's Alice's stolen Spiritia, hell, not only regenerates, but surpases her previous level. Did Basara's guitar playing factor in to? Somewhat likely.

But here we have the key moment that will send all future events rolling. Gepelnitch now is certain that his dream of a never ending source of Spiritia can be achieved. And our Fire Bomber is finally starting to show that a sound more explosive than missiles is achievable, even if they don't realize it themselves.

Also, bonus points for Sweet Fantasy, one of my favorite Mylene songs.

I say we double up on episodes this week, and watch "Deep Ballad" before Friday, so we can get to "Minmay Video" faster! I honestly can't decide if its more exciting watching 7 for the first time not knowing what's going to happen, or watching it again with anticipation for the epic things to come.

Probably the latter...Specially considering that we know just how BOMBA is going to take over the galaxy :D

Watching the episode later today if I can get the Mrs. to go stop fidgeting with my laptop!

Just finished watching ep. 9, My thoughts on the episode...

First of all, I had forgotten how professional Mylene was when it came to her performance as a member of Fire Bomber. Not only does she try to get gigs for the band as we saw in previous episodes, but she really places a lot of thought into her performances (which Basara criticizes). I found her short monologue about trying to avoid leading a "mayonnaise rice" and her contempt for slackers quite revealing. I wonder how much of that is a consequence of being the daughter of Max and Miria.

I had also forgotten how Ray got really angry at Basara for making Mylene storm out of the bands session. I had this lasting impression of Ray being a completely unflappable guy, of whom you'd never get a reaction like that. It's also interesting to notice how he's the one person that Basara will absolutely listen too. We saw it first with the whole missile on the valkyrie affair and now with Basara chasing after Mylene as soon as Ray reacts angrily to their discussion. It just really shows that Basara is not as stubborn and mule headed an individual as we all seem to think.

Keith has already remarked on how we finally get to know about Gepelnitch's (did I spell that right?!) Spiritia Farm project. I can remember how the first time I saw M7 I could absolutely not fathom what was going on and what Gepelnitch was planning. In that sense, I now realize that M7 is really well written, showing its cards little by little, and being rather more multilayered than just a "show about a guy flying a Valkyrie and singing"

Finally, what's up with the rain inside of City 7?? Is it a way of getting rid of excess humidity accumulated by condensation?

Remember these City ships were designed to be as much Earth-like as possible.

Frontier takes that concept to the extreme.

That is the simple answer, I'll address this in more detail probably in my science bit when I do my review. I haven't watched it yet though. Circumstance foils me again. Soon though.

Now that I think about it I can definetly see Basara and crew as an inspiration for the charaters of Cowboy Bepop. Basera and Spike both have that simple lazy air about them that hides their true nature.

I honestly can't decide if its more exciting watching 7 for the first time not knowing what's going to happen, or watching it again with anticipation for the epic things to come.

I just finished watching Episode 49 the other day I have felt both feelings during this viewing of M7. When I first saw M7 on Veoh half of the show had been removed :( . So one minute I am watching episode 1, the next I am watching the second half of episode 27 and realizing why M7 is the G Gundam of Macross. So it was exciting to see what all I had missed for the first time up to episode 27. Then it was anticipation for the epic moments that were just as if not more so moving the second time moving. Hell, I think I've been coming down with Macross 7 fever as well as I find myself replaying parts of the final episode just about every hour, looking for any excuse to post M7 vids on facebook, and find myself singing "Planet Dance" which I used to consider the most obnoxious song in all Macross 7.

That right there is actually the true tell of a Macross 7 fan. I call it the "Planet Dance" effect. It goes like this:

-1st few listens: Decent enough song

-Next few listens: Seriously, I'm tired of this damn song already! Rock, we finally have Holy Lonely Night, down with Planet Dance!!

-Sometime later: I LOVE PLANET DANCE!!

Not sure why it works that way, but it does, even I went through this, and to this day, I still love Planet Dance. Note that those who can not learn to love "Planet Dance," will never be Macross 7 fans, again, don't know why, it just works that way.

It did take a LONG TIME for me to warm up to Planet Dance when I first watched M7. I kept on thinking: "There's so many other great Fire Bomber songs...why only use that one for the credits??!!"

And then eventually I just found myself humming it constantly and playing on the car stereo (at high speed mind you. Planet Dance cannot be heard while stuck in traffic).

I was doing that exact same thing yesterday, and came to the realization... is there any way to play Fire Bomber music without having it at LOUD volume? You either hate it, or must ROCK OUT to it, there seems to be no middle ground.

I also average 5mph faster with that CD in...

I believe I know why this effects happens and that this was intended by the writers:

- It comes off as the most over used song in the first half of the series and literally "annoys" and "tortures" viewers at times.

-Fans are relieved once Holy Lonely Night appears its use goes downhill and even has a 3 episode vacation towards the end of the series...

around the time in the series the protodelvin steal the ocean resort ship from episode 8 in order to feed Gepelnitch cause you know "♫Its a

Flying Paradise, a forgotten energy♫" and all.

- Then after having a break we are are treated to Planet Dance one last time sung by someone other then Basara for a change which really cements M7 fans love to Planet Dance during this fantastic emotional scene IMO.

In my case, having watched only the 2nd half of M7 in my first viewing I can honestly say that if your not intimate with where the show and charaters actually began and how they changed then most if not all the intended signifcance and emotional impact about this last performance of Planet Dance will go right over head and the scene will come across as just ordinary filler before the climatic battle and not the memorial emotionally charged scene it was intended to be. Sure with the lyrics everyone logically deduces why the show inserted Planet Dance over any other song, but all that gripping emotional energy that the show slowly builds up since Episode 1 to this particular Planet Dance moment is "♫a forgotten energy♫" to everyone, but M7 fans who are of course intimate with the show and its characters from the beginning. Creating a moment that leaves M7 Fans emotionally pumped over Planet Dance while non-M7 fans are just feeling relieved that the show is almost over if they ever watch the final episode.

Also to sum things up every good writer knows that the opening scene will set the tone of their book, show, movie, whatever. As the first M7 song and Firebombers opening act it sets the spiritual tone of the series. So its only natural that to be a fan of Macross 7 you have to be a fan of Planet Dance as well.
