It looks like the sort of thing that would fit more into some sort of cheap Hanna-Barbara/Filmation show from the late 70's/early 80's. They look like aliens from ewwwwwwww. Taksraven
Einherjar Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 Were the Praxians really necessary? There were already Meltlandi, but yes, not in Robotech. "Death by snu snu!"
hulagu Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 And the rest........ The PRAXIANS!!! (so scary) They're like, giant amazon women. Not giant as in Meltran, but as in big-boned. Who ride in protoculture powered chariots. I think Breetai hooks up with one before he bites it. Speaking of El Breetai...
Gubaba Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 The HG at Robotech Debate thread will be back after this important public service announcement: I think it would be classified as pornography if the genitals were exposed to the camera lens. There was a big bruhaahaa about that concerning one scene of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" that depicted full fronal nudity of a male cast member. I don't know what movie you're thinking of, but it ain't Fast Times at Ridgemont High... We now return you to the HG and Robotech Debate thread.

We now return you to the HG and Robotech Debate thread. Well, for all I know there could have been purple elephants with pink polka dots flying backwards through that movie, cause only one bit of the film forever occupies my mind..... Just for some relevance, who owns the copyright for Robotech in Japan? Taksraven
Gubaba Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 Just for some relevance, who owns the copyright for Robotech in Japan? Taksraven As far as I know, no one. Robotech.com, at least, is apparently not accessible in Japan.

But then people would use Mac7 as a response, despite it being a financial success and an actually completed work.
Save Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 (edited) Just for some relevance, who owns the copyright for Robotech in Japan? In Japan Robotech is only publicly known as an event where students build robots that have to go through some kind of obstacle course. I think they have the Japanese copyright on the name. As far as I know, no one. Robotech.com, at least, is apparently not accessible in Japan. Robotech.com is accessible as far as bringing it up in a web browser, not sure if the member section can be accessed. Since I was banned long before moving here, I couldn't tell you. The Robotech discussed here only exists in the form of "gray area" imported merchandise, and is known to a small degree to older hardcore anime fans. Somebody did a simplified fan sub for RTSC, but you had to download the file to get it to work with a ripped DVD file. The original series never had any Japanese translation. Somebody did a simplified fan sub for RTSC, but you had to download the file to get it to work with a ripped DVD file. The original series never had any Japanese translation. One of my Japanese friends, who is a big Macross fan, went to China for college and saw Robotech while he was there. I asked him what he thought about it, and he said it just confused him, and he couldn't figure out why anyone would bother to change Macross so much. My question is, why is Robotech the version that made it to China?
Lolicon Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 My question is, why is Robotech the version that made it to China? That's where many bootleggers operate out of. Robotech is a bootleg show.
Seto Kaiba Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 Seto and I wonder the same thing about that man: why he isn't sharing what he's smoking with the rest of the class! I know we've been over this in this thread a few times, but I guess once more wouldn't hurt... I've talked to Palladium and gotten a fairly reasonable explanation for exactly why there's so much completely ridiculous and wildly inaccurate stuff in the licensed Robotech and Macross II Palladium RPGs. It's not that they didn't TRY, it's mainly a lack of support from the owner of the licensed property in the case of RT, and a case of inadequate source availability in the case of the Macross II game. HG basically fobbed them off with a highly inadequate packet of information and left them to pay out-of-pocket to have official Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada artbooks translated, and go frame by frame through the footage looking for clues. In the case of Macross II, they had almost no artbooks to work from, so they had to go almost exclusively on the animation. I'd guess since there was no animation for the Sentinels series beyond the "movie" made from what little footage they had, it was likely entirely down to whatever they could scrounge from Harmony Gold's notes. Who is/was Long, cause his stuff is pretty crap. It looks like the sort of thing that would fit more into some sort of cheap Hanna-Barbara/Filmation show from the late 70's/early 80's. RedWolf Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 My question is, why is Robotech the version that made it to China? Marketing to local stations. It did make it in South America too. The plus point is that you don't need Japanese translators. English is a more or less an international language easily translatable. Here in the Philippines during the late 80's either the stations hire Japanese to English translators and English voice actors for super robot or real robot anime or they import for syndication already English translated anime via US companies. Hence my first experience of Macross is Macross not Macross as Robotech. Frankly as a kid I wasn't into the whole love story plotline of Macross. Which is understandable as I was six or seven years old. But I do like the VF-1. I had Tansformers toys, I had the Dairugger XV version of Voltron and there is the VF-1J toy. I liked it because not only because it is transformable but also not a brick. You can move its legs and arms. Which shows how innovative Shoji Kawamori is in designing. Plus it was an analog for the F-14 Tomcat. I like the Tomcat. Then came the early 90's with Robotech was syndicated in a local station. I was like... Why are they calling Macross Robotech? It was obvious to me when I saw the two other parts of it that it was a patch up work much like Voltron. The patch up work was terrible. At least WEP showed some effort with splicing scenes, one crossover movie and an original third season with Voltron.
Freiflug88 Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 Wonder how they reproduce? Taksraven "PROTO-CULT-URE shou me!" And all of this stuff, as Gubaba has pointed out is cooler than anything we got in Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross Zero, and Macross Frontier..... Indeed. Macross has hot mecha and chicks, Robotech does not. My question is, why is Robotech the version that made it to China? Well HG has the international distribution rights to distribute Macross outside of Japanese territories and China has not been a territority of Japan since WWII...

Yeah, I've heard of the confusion caused in the Philippines, with Macross AND Robotech both being run. So, in your honest opinion...which one is better known? (I'm guessing Macross, based on all the Filipino Frontier fans, but it'd be nice to be sure.) Or is it a generational thing? '80s kids like Macross, '90s kids like Robotech...that sort of thing?

(I'm guessing Macross, based on all the Filipino Frontier fans, but it'd be nice to be sure.) Or is it a generational thing? '80s kids like Macross, '90s kids like Robotech...that sort of thing? Generational but that depends on how net savvy and a geek you are. If you are a real geek you'll recognize Macross more. Here's an anecdote. I was at my college's common lounge. It is not uncommon to see someone play anime or toku on their laptop. I was doing my own thing chilling. Someone was playing Macross Frontier episode sub on his laptop. I heard someone in the audience say "Oh Robotech". I was like I wanted to be a straight man in a manzai comedy. The thing going through my head was... "Chigau! Zen Zen Chigau! Robotech ja nai!"
Lolicon Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 I think Robotech has enough faults of its own without making up fake ones to insult it. That's more the kind of stuff HG would do. Awww did I insult your precious Robotech? Too damn bad. Nice try comparing me to HG though. Robotech is still a crappy hackjob of a show.

That sounds like something that would happen here in the U.S. Although here, I think it's mostly the '80s kids that like Robotech, and the '90s kids that despise it.
terry the lone wolf Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 In my perfect ALTERNATE UNIVERSE: Robotech the Movie would've been a runaway hit, The Sentinels would've aired for a full season, Tatsunoko's designs for Robotech 3000 would've been animated, & Phoebe Cates would've played Lynn Minmay in live action Robotech movie...
Seto Kaiba Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 I think Robotech has enough faults of its own without making up fake ones to insult it. That's more the kind of stuff HG would do. Let's not split hairs here hulagu, for all practical purposes the "original" Robotech series is little more than a legitimized bootleg with a really bad Hong Kong translation, and every sequel attempt with the possible exception of the Robotech 3000 series has had all the artistic integrity of Space Gundam V, relying almost exclusively on stuff from shows they don't own (esp. Macross), altered JUST enough to avoid a copyright infringement lawsuit. I was like I wanted to be a straight man in a manzai comedy. The thing going through my head was... "Chigau! Zen Zen Chigau! Robotech ja nai!" Oddly, I had that exact same situation in reverse when a Japanese friend of mine in grad school saw someone with a bad Shadow Chronicles desktop background and thought it was Mospeada.
Einherjar Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 The Philippines had easier access to anime than the U.S. for years. I remember my cousin talk about watching Voltes V on TV there when I was younger. But it's a mish mash; when I first visited the Philippines in the 80s, I got to see Voltron being shown in English. When I went there again in 2002, they had a block of anime on one network being showed subbed, but they weren't new shows. They were promoting Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin), Cooking Master Boy, and Eden's Bowy. Meanwhile, I was able to buy dubbed anime on VCD from a legitimate video store. At least I hope it was legitimate, because it looked like a Walden Books from the inside, but the quality of the VCDs were mediocre and they only had two episodes each.

That sounds like something that would happen here in the U.S. Although here, I think it's mostly the '80s kids that like Robotech, and the '90s kids that despise it. Well at least DYRL, Macross II and Macross Plus (OVA) was broadcasted. Not to say all 90's kids are ignorant. At least here HG can't pull their dickish moves of banning Macross toys. Unfortunately most of the toy stores today cater more on the Gundam gunpla fans. You can get Macross toys at special hobby shops in an architectural maze known as Greenhills. (I always get lost in there. )

Does the poorly done Robotech hackjob lack any artistic merit beyond that of nolstagia for those watched it in the original run? Yes. Did HG actually have the legal right to do this poo? Unfortunately, yes. In light of this, and the RL shennigans that have gone down since, does BW have a right to never again let HG 100 feet 0f its IP? Hell yes. Mostly, I'm sore about the FASA (and now Catalyst)/HG issues about throwing accusations of "bootleg" around. Oddly, I had that exact same situation in reverse when a Japanese friend of mine in grad school saw someone with a bad Shadow Chronicles desktop background and thought it was Mospeada. I think HG would have been better off making a straight Mospeada II spinoff or Mospeada the Movie rather than try to tie it into the ridiculous continuity of the Sentinels timeline.
