Lolicon Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 RT.com is more like Animal Farm. The slow and witless get eaten up by the cruel and stupid. I think I herniated something... that's the best analogy of RT.com ever!
BeyondTheGrave Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) Stalin??? I thought the general concensus of the Admin's of RT.com was that of the "Galactic Empire" of Star Wars? "Darth Yun" says it all... So Frank Agrama is Darth Sidious? I think that part of HG's reasoning when it comes to stuffing around Macross is that if they gave up the copyright on Macross, or allowed its release and distribution by others, a lot of hardcore RT fans would see it as HG "selling out" robotech. Its a wonder that they just don't blame Macross (in a comparison to Goldstein or Snowball, there you go, more Orwellian references) for all of Robotech's "problems". Taksraven How could HG sell out? Usually someone sells out for something better but Hg just hasn't. Edited December 15, 2009 by BeyondTheGrave
Einherjar Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I get the feeling that Sentinels (the animated version) is well-loved BECAUSE it wasn't finished. For some reason, a lot of Robotech fans seem to really like the "interactivity" inherent in all the plot holes and uncompleted sequels to Robotech, and enjoy filling in the gaps through fan-speculation. As such, any incomplete venture becomes a depository for whatever the fan would have liked to see in the production. I guarantee that, had the Sentinels been completed, it would only be about as well-liked as Shadow Chronicles, or maybe even less: the outlines presented in Robotech Art III were...erm...less than compelling. I read some of the stuff from Art III that was posted on rt.com too. I was more bothered about the content then the actual plot. If Sentinels was a taste of what they were going to do, I want to know if they could really get away with a lot of the mature stuff they were planning back in the 80s for a kid's show.
taksraven Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 So Frank Agrama is Darth Sidious? How could HG sell out? Usually someone sells out for something better but Hg just hasn't. I mean that RT fans would see HG as "abandoning" robotech if they had a hand in the distribution of Macross legally outside of Japan. Taksraven

If Sentinels was a taste of what they were going to do, I want to know if they could really get away with a lot of the mature stuff they were planning back in the 80s for a kid's show. Well, it was just the outline, right? I'm sure they would've learned right quick what they could and couldn't do in afternoon time slots (or early morning in some areas: check your local listings). I was kind of down on Robotech by the time the Sentinels was due to appear, but I remember at least two of my friends awaiting it with great anticipation. All I could think of when I read the outline was, "Man, would they have been disappointed!" All of us moved on to Zeta Gundam around that time, anyway. When you've got Zeta, you don't need Robotech. Like, at all.

They would get away with it by having fuzzy-wuzzy giant bear/ewok aliens to amuse the kiddies. (Can't remember the name of the alien race, but it was the picture of that creature that really bothered me in RT Art 3. A huge grinning bear with sunglasses, somebody help me out here!) Taksraven And the several decades of lies promises that another series is on the way, crappy toys and lackluster Movie isn't considered abandonment of sorts?
taksraven Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 And the several decades of lies promises that another series is on the way, crappy toys and lackluster Movie isn't considered abandonment of sorts? Would seem that it isn't to the fundamentalist die-hards. They continue to hang around. Taksraven
Einherjar Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 And the several decades of lies promises that another series is on the way, crappy toys and lackluster Movie isn't considered abandonment of sorts? Are you serious? Many of them sound like they love that kind of "quality" material. And what happened recently isn't anything new. It's the Sentinel's Curse all over again, which many have, unusually, made light of it for years. I don't think they have ever understood how grave a sign it really is. It's a very long term investment.

Einherjar Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 When I think about it sounds more like neglect. I think that's why the Robotech Convention Tour exists, to make everyone know it's still around, fans, anti-fans, and opportunistic corporate entities alike. How can it be neglecting people if they're willing to spend money annually telling people nothing new? And who doesn't like the swag they always give away at these things?
Seto Kaiba Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) I was kind of down on Robotech by the time the Sentinels was due to appear, but I remember at least two of my friends awaiting it with great anticipation. All I could think of when I read the outline was, "Man, would they have been disappointed!" In hindsight, it really is a shame that Robotech II: the Sentinels got canceled as early as it did. If the reception the various other incarnations of the series got and the fanbase's general antipathy for it are anything to go by, it probably would've been the final nail in Robotech's coffin... a series so piss-dribblingly awful that even the hardcore fans of Robotech often have nothing but scorn for it. One could argue that what's kept Robotech alive these last 20+ years has been that Harmony Gold's various failed sequels all crashed and burned either in development or the earliest stages of production, which allowed fans to look back on those projects and see an ideal of the show that might have been rather than the show that was actually made, and continue to hope that Harmony Gold would one day deliver a sequel that would meet their increasingly ridiculous expectations. Had one of their earlier attempts at a sequel survived production and made it to release before going down in flames, Robotech probably would've died with it. EDIT: I think they were called Karbarans Kabarrians, actually... Edited December 15, 2009 by Seto Kaiba
azrael Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 Alright kids, let's stay focused here. On the more relevant topic..... I think that part of HG's reasoning when it comes to stuffing around Macross is that if they gave up the copyright on Macross, or allowed its release and distribution by others, a lot of hardcore RT fans would see it as HG "selling out" robotech. ... Yes, they risk alienating older fans, but really, RT is NOT HG's only source of income. Real estate isn't just their only source of income. Majority of their income comes from licensing. Frank Agrama is in the business of buying up distribution licenses and selling them to other countries. If the diehards get felt like they're getting the shortend of the stick, I don't think it would make much of a difference. If HG wants to keep making money from the Tatsunoko license (and vice versa), they'll have to maintain the deal.

BeyondTheGrave Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I think that's why the Robotech Convention Tour exists, to make everyone know it's still around, fans, anti-fans, and opportunistic corporate entities alike. How can it be neglecting people if they're willing to spend money annually telling people nothing new? And who doesn't like the swag they always give away at these things? To me its still neglect. The convention sound more like a chore than an actual company that cares about its fans and product. (had an analogy but cant figure out how to phrase it properly) http://www.kent.net/robotech/information/karbarran.shtml I probably asked this a long time ago, but production/distribution-wise, does anyone know what HG's been doing this year besides pimping out Robotech? I was looking for that god awful picture. probably trying to recover lost funds from the economy taking a dump. On another not does hg get anything from the gatchaman movie or casshern sins?
Einherjar Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) To me its still neglect. The convention sound more like a chore than an actual company that cares about its fans and product. (had an analogy but cant figure out how to phrase it properly) Exactly, it's a shallow illusion to garner interest in the up and coming anime/sci-fi/comic book crowd and the old nostalgic fans every year. The problem is that too few people realize it, because they equate it to a Star Trek or Star Wars convention when they were still in the process of being established. Edit: My gosh, I may have inadvertently went to one during my first anime convention. I'm not sure if it was an ADV Panel or HG/Robotech one, because I distinctly remember an Asian guy, maybe Tommy Yune in hindsight, showcasing the lengths one of the companies went to restore Genesis Climber Mospeada for the first DVD release. It was a split screen presentation of the original and restored footage. Plus, the con program had a lot of Macross art on it, which could have marked an anniversary for either show back then. taksraven Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Frank Agrama is in the business of buying up distribution licenses and selling them to other countries. So by the sounds of that, HG is not a company that normally produces anything. No wonder they don't do anything. Taksraven
Renato Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Heh so true, in my high school we had mixed locker rooms and showers, makes the discussion on underaged nude in animation a bit silly to me. Yeah, I kno.............wait.. WHAT??!
anime52k8 Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I'm surprised Godwin's Law hasn't taken effect here yet. Especially given all the terrible things that Harmony Gold has done. All right, Carl Macek is the spiritual reincarnation of Hitler. And Kevin McKeever is the actual reincarnation of Joseph Goebbels. there, happy now?

Einherjar Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) It's more like an Enron/Bernard Madoff situation; they're all elusive outside of public appearances and you literally don't know what's going on behind the scenes until bad news reaches media outlets. For example, the Mechwarrior 5 problem. That was probably one of the only news worthy things about HG and Robotech that caught the attention of people outside the debates here and there this year. jenius Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) While The Sentinels did get pretty crazy on a few different levels it's kind of wrong as adults to look back at the alien designs for a children's TV show and say "Oh my God, those are so lame." The Karbarrans are just Wookies... you got a problem with Chewbacca? The name, on the other hand, is almost as bad as the squid people being from Calamari or whatever it was in Star Wars. The Karbarrans... Care-bear-ans... So clever. Edited December 15, 2009 by jenius
Freiflug88 Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Man, that's SOOOOOO much better than Valks with faces, guitar control-sticks, and Giant Naked Metaphorical Space Ranka... What are you talking about this is obviously Gubaba who is from Macross 7 as well. Just as Būta evolved into a human from all the Spiral energy he absorbed from Simon in Gurren Lagann, Gubba evolved into this beast from all Spirita energy he absorbed from listening to Firebomber music. All of this was explained in that episode where Fire Bomber performs a concert on that giant Poké Ball ship in Episode 3000: Pika-Bomba! .
