All this talk about Mechwarrior made me remember some other mecha franchises I haven't heard much from for years. Anyone know what's been happening with series like Heavy Gear and Starsiege? All I know for both of them is the CGI TV show and the Votoms-like skates in one and that one of the companies responsible for the other one went out of business and it shifted away from mecha with Tribes.

As a matter of fact, Heavy Gear is heavily influenced by VOTOMS. The mecha and character designs share a lot of the same characteristics.

Yup. In fact, the very first Heavy Gear design came about as a joke: I had sketched-up what I called an updated Votoms that I called the "V2." Apparently, the joke backfired

Was that a Jager or a Hunter?

Is Heavy Gear an RPG too? I think Steven Jackson Games was working on a new edition

DP9 published both an RPG and a Miniature version at the beginning (1st edition rule book had both actually.) What was kinda a neat thing was that user content was incorporated into the broader storyline, as the Universe had a pretty in-depth meta story. This continued until about 2005 when RPG was gradually phased out, and the company started focusing on the miniature rules... until last year with SJG obtaining the rights.

I loved the earth/starsiege games, enjoyed them far more then the battletech games. I wish they would more instead of those tribes games, which I could never get into.
