taksraven Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 I dunno, maybe "Legend of the Overfiend" would be suitable? NO!!!! JOKE!!!!! DON'T WATCH IT. EXTREMELY DISTURBING MATERIAL...... Taksraven Quote
Keith Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Evangelion is so NOT for the family. Escaflowne rocks though, and has just about everything you asked for. Cowboy Bebop--also awesome, but again, not for the family (though better than Eva). Any Miyazaki movie is great for anyone. Shenanigoats! I let my brother watch Eva when he was 5, and he turned out fine. Since when did MW's turn into such prudes!! Quote
todd77 Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Another vote here for Planetes despite the absence of mecha (unless you count the robot arm ). And if you do enjoy it, you might want to give its sister-production, Twin Spica, a try as well. Both are at the very top of my list of favorite animes. Quote
F-ZeroOne Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Planetes is basically Patlabor on TV in Space. That basically means you should see it as soon as humanely possible. It should be okay for a 10 year old, theres no naughty bits that I can recall but possibly some swearing. It also deals with some quite grown-up themes about human mortality which might be a bit heavy going for a youngster. Quote

Well.. we could always tell him to watch Cosplay Frontier. An say that you recommended it. DO NOT WATCH IT. Quote
Renegade Zentradi Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 What? You STILL haven't watched Toppa Tengenn Gurren Lagann? Life is short! Sieze it! This could be the greatest night in your family's life! Get four pizzas and six bottles of coke and watch the whole series through tonight! Pete I think you sold me... Thank you...and thanks to EVERYONE who posted in this thread...I got my work cut out for me check out all the suggestions...! Quote
VFTF1 Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I think you sold me I hope so - for your sake It would be a pity if you went one more day in life without seeing Toppa Tengenn Gurren Lagann. And it would also be a major drag if you only watched one episode per night. The series is so full of adrenaline that to truly enjoy it you need to just watch it straight through You won't be bored or regret it for even a nano-second Pete Quote
macrossnake Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, not a lot of Mech action, but story is awesome, highly recomment. Quote
Keith Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Well.. we could always tell him to watch Cosplay Frontier. An say that you recommended it. DO NOT WATCH IT. At least not until you watch Cool Devices, hot hot mecha action! Quote
BeyondTheGrave Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Great Teacher Onizuka: GTO Gungrave Gun x Sword Heroic Age Trigun Soul Eater Most of these contain some sort of fan service. Quote
Wanzerfan Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 I'm suprised no one sugessted these series. The Record of Lodoss War (turn on the subtitles when you get to the royal ball scene if you get the DVD, the song is not sung in English) - Lisa Ortiz's first work, pretty good plot whereas Chronocles of the Heroic Knight follows the manga more The Slayers - another of Ortiz's work; really good, especially if you're a Crispin Freeman fan (he takes over the role of Zelgaldis after the thirteenth episode) VanDread and VanDread the Second Stage - a true battle of the sexes anime, Tony Oliver and Steve Blum star; highly recommended. Mobile Suit Gundam W (Gundam Wing) - although I've only seen the cut version, it was very good I'll give you a little secret about the storyine, total pacifism doesn't work . I can only think of one thing to bail on Escaflowne the Movie - this thing was so bad I bailed about 5 minutes into the thing, seeing Escaflowne bleeding really turned me off . Even though this isn't anime per se, I do recommend Ben 10, Alien Force, the storyline is very good. Quote
eugimon Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Nope, escaflowne in both movie and series form is awesome. Don't miss it. It had the great misfortune of being released at the same time as Evangelion and got completely overshadowed but it's a fantastic show and the movie is great as well, a darker slightly twisted retelling that's grander and more theatrical but well animated with a fantastic score. akt_m Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 TOP recommendations For you: Cowboy Bebop (Spike is my favorite male anime character until now) FLCL For your familly: Some Ghibli movies: Laputa, Monoke, Nausicaa, Porco Rosso, one i don't remember the title about a young witch. that's all... What was a waste of time (but didn't watch all of them until the end): Gundam Seed Gundam 00 (IMO really sucks) Toppa Tengenn Gurren Lagann Aquarion (believe: i just watched because it had Shoji Kawamori on it, ugh) Arjuna (same as above, didn't learn from past errors, ugh) What i liked but won't recommend: (may not please everybody) Ah Megami Sama Claymore Code Geass (i know, it is far from being perfect, the robots sucks, but i liked ) What i watched but... not that cool: Ghost in the shell SAC 1 and 2nd gig (Overrated, IMO: it is very boring if there is no action on the episode, good if you want to sleep while they are talking about a lot of stuff.) Evangelion (the whole robot concept is nice, i didn't watch the 2 last episodes, it is very boring for a ending, the end movie is nicer, also totally overrated). Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (it was really nice at the begining, but after some point at the middle i began to skip episodes) Quote

I agree. I got to see the Escaflowne movie on a big screen and it was great. Not at all what I was expecting, and nowhere near as satisfying as the TV show, but still a very good film. Quote

VFTF1 Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Now, now. Don't jump on people for not loving Gurren Lagann. Be nice. Nobody's perfect. However- I do hope that Renagade Zendradi finally got those 4 pizzas and cokes and went ahead and watched it Pete Quote
David Hingtgen Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 I've not watched Gurren Lagann, and I don't plan to. Quote

VFTF1 Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 It is awesome. But remember - even in the world of Gurren Lagann, some people actually prefered staying under ground. Viral was right to defend them. We shouldn't force them out from the underground either... Pete Quote
Greyryder Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 I'll second the vote for Vandread, and Vandread Second Stage. I'd also suggest Dual: Parallel World Trouble. It's Tenchi Muyo with giant robots. The pilot suit scene is pure comedy gold, but you might want to screen it first, to make sure you think it's okay for your kids. Quote

As for Macross 7 - either way, I'm sure all of us will be curious to hear your opinions for better or for worse about the series. Please drop by the Films/Series threads board to let us know in one of the multiple M7 threads that are there But really happy you all liked Gurren Lagann Pete Quote

At least he hasn't watched Code Eros...or those Eva porn...or the many Lum porn... Don't watch any of those. In fact, just stay away from any anime-to-live action porn all together. Quote
kung flu Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 I would recomend gundam, no surprises there, but i think it maybe too complicated to get in to for new veiwers, especailly with all the spin offs and alternate universes. If you can stick to a universe, stick with the UC one first. Quote

I'm really glad y'all put me up on it...! Yeah...I'll do a Macross 7 review when we finish the series...but that could be awhile...we're only up to episode 6 and we only watch like 2 episodes a day........... Quote

But one of the things that have kept me away from Gundam all these years is that with it's 30 year history I don't know where to start... I own a few episodes of one of the series and have caught bits of it on TV...and it seems to me like the series you can't just jump into at any old episode... How do all the Gundam series break down...? What ones are a must watch...? What ones can I skip...? What is the best way to begin...? Quote

How do all the Gundam series break down...? What ones are a must watch...? What ones can I skip...? What is the best way to begin...? Gundam can be really easy if you don't mind long series and old animation. Just watch 'em in the order they came out and stop when you get to the "thanks I've had enough" stage: Mobile Suit Gundam (TV Series) (1979) Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy (1981-82) Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985-86) Mobile Suit Gundam Double Zeta (1986-87) Char's Counterattack (1988) This is the "first series." Double Zeta is highly divisive among fans (much like Macross 7), but most agree that it gets better as it goes along. And if you watch all of those, you've seen the major stories of the U.C. timeline, and it's all very straightforward and simple. It's after this that it gets complicated, and you start needing charts and timelines and 8x10 color glossy photos with the circles and arrows and the paragraph on the back of each one explaining what it's for. So I won't go into that yet. Although a lot of it is QUITE good indeed, and is highly recommended. *sits back and waits for someone to come in saying that I've got it all wrong and you should start with, I dunno, 08th MS Team or something.* Quote

IAM PRIVVY TO INFOMATION THAT SAYS THAT ROBOTECH EXISRTED BEFROE GUDAMMM ITS IN THE NOVELS MINMEI GAVE BIRTH TO ALL LIFE!! HEHEHE *now to think intelligent* Idk gundam is ok considering the stories are all the same earth vs. space, natural born vs. genetically engineered etc. Just wiki it read the plot of each series and which ever one sounds interesting start there . Note char's counter attack has some sweet gundams but emo teens. Yes 08th ms team is good but start somewhere else to get the full story or just an idea of what going on. Quote
