Skull Leader Posted September 16, 2003 Posted September 16, 2003 Or how about "sing at them while other people shoot at them"? Seemed pretty effective in the series. Although, it seems to me that it was more that they just got in the way that pissed everyone off, not the music.
Macross Junky Posted September 16, 2003 Posted September 16, 2003 Hehe... I gotta admit that Macross 7 annoyed the hell out of me at first, until Myria started kicking ass in her old school VF-1J. I also fell in love with the VF-17 and VF-22. I've watched the entire series a few times now, and must admit that it has grown on me--although the Protodevlin mostly remind me of the Robeasts from Voltron, and the performance of the Macross 7 VF-11 fleet pilots SUCKS!!! I actually liked a few of Fire Bombers songs enough (Holy Lonely Night and Try Again) that I went out and purchased the Ultimate Fire CD. It's gotten alot of play in my car stereo... BOMBAH!
Kamion Posted September 16, 2003 Posted September 16, 2003 Pranet Prance, Pranet Prace... It was rather ridiculous in the first few episodes... but then the Pranet Prance sorta gets stuck to your head and soon you wanna see more of those repeat footage battle scenes... I have no idea whether I like the series or not but I watched it until the end... I just came away liking a few of Fire Bomber's songs like My Soul For You and Remember 16 and of course Pranet Prance...
Keith Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 Or how about "sing at them while other people shoot at them"? Seemed pretty effective in the series. Although, it seems to me that it was more that they just got in the way that pissed everyone off, not the music. Hardly. The 7 fleet had its ass handed to it by the Varuta fleet. Diamond Force was widdled down to one pilot, the VF-11 squadrens were no match for the suped up VF-14's, Emerald Force (once formed) fared no better than Diamond Force, and the Protodevilin were merely toying with them by using the Varuta fleet to begin with. Once Sivil came, the whole ball game changed, and no mass of pilots could even begin to handle here. Meanwhile Basara honed his skill & power, managed to break the mind control of the pilots, effectively freeing them instead of killing them. Not that many of them died at the hands of the 7 fleet to begin with. Basara was in no ones way, pissed only those who didn't understand the full ramifications of what was going on "off," and was fully sanctioned by the military.
Powered Convoy Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 Heh. Just wait until you see her flying Yamatos around the room making 'swoosh' noises. Then it's time to break out the ring. lol. She did get me the Bandai Reissue VF-1J Max type for my birthday last year, and a couple years ago on Valentine's Day the YF-21! Randy aka Powered Convoy
Radd Posted October 25, 2003 Posted October 25, 2003 Hmm, girlfriend was over and we had nothing to do and nothing else to watch, plus she mentioned that the other day she had really wanted to watch some Macross, so I put in the first DVD of Macross 7...and she liked it. We watched the entire first DVD, and she put off leaving just to watch all the extra stuff tacked on at the end. Good times.

lebhead Posted October 27, 2003 Author Posted October 27, 2003 just to update you guys on my progress... there hasn't been much lately. but it's not because she didn't like it, but rather that i've been too busy to sit down and watch it with her. however, the last episode we watched (about 2 weeks ago) she enjoyed.
Skull00 Posted October 27, 2003 Posted October 27, 2003 My girlfriend doesn't know I like Macross. She said once she hates anime and otaku so I try to hide it from her so I've got my DVDs/games/toys/books etc packed away in the garage...they only come out when shes not around. She's got the same birthday as Minmay tho' (10.10). wierd.
Blaine23 Posted October 27, 2003 Posted October 27, 2003 Heh... my girlfriend didn't really watch Macross 7 - she doesn't really watch any of it (particularly subtitled), she just hangs out while I watch it. But she can sing damn near every Fire Bomber song, though.

Keith Posted October 28, 2003 Posted October 28, 2003 Irregardless of whether she's just someone you want to poke, or whether she's someone you want to spend an extended amount of time with, you should never hide your hobbies/interests. It's not fair to either of you.

She hates it bad enough you have to hide it!!? That is lousy. Is she into anything that you hate? You should make a compromise. I can't imagine hiding one of my interests from my GF.
dna Posted October 28, 2003 Posted October 28, 2003 I can't imagine hiding one of my interests from my GF. Unless the police come snooping around. Then it's time to hide some of those instrests.

ewilen Posted October 28, 2003 Posted October 28, 2003 Still going slowly through downloaded episodes; personally I wasn't very impressed with 1-5, but episode 6 is better and now I'm halfway through 7. I think I'd like to get the set so I can watch comfortably at home with my wife. (She likes anime and has enjoyed SDF Macross so far. DYRL less so, probably because she hadn't seen any of the series before I showed her the movie.) I see two big collections: Fx, and MAC. MAC has gotten slightly better reviews at import-anime.com, but I seem to remember Keith recommending the Fx for some reason. Any opinions on how the two compare?

Effect Posted October 28, 2003 Posted October 28, 2003 I have the FX versions. I believe they are better buy, could be wrong, is that, that set includes the entire series plus the Encore episodes(3), the OVA, and the movie. I don't think the Mac version includes those.
Radd Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 I've heard the FX set also has better video and audio quality. That's the set I have, and the quality is definitely top notch. The subtitles are very decent as far as HK bootlegs go, and there are tons of extras.
Keith Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 There isn't too much difference anymore between the two, as MAC has tossed away their old version in favor of ripping FX's version. FX Benefits - Better encode (though still not perfect), all intro's, endings, & next episode previews intact, all omake present, and complete series including Encore, Dynamite (note, the "to be continued" last 2-3 seconds from each Dynamite episode were strangely clipped), & the M7 movie. MAC - If you can find one of the old sets you will get "slightly" better subtitles than the FX set, but no Omake, & only 1 intro/ending per dsic.
Skull00 Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 (edited) Irregardless of whether she's just someone you want to poke, or whether she's someone you want to spend an extended amount of time with, you should never hide your hobbies/interests. It's not fair to either of you. I was thinking about breaking it to her slowly by saying something like: 'there was this show I liked when I was a kid called 'robotech' and guess what??, its partly this japanese show called Macross and my friend lent me two or three volumes...I think I'll watch em..." Three months later I'll reveal my collection and say my friend gave it to me. what do you think? good plan? I don't want to come straight out and say I'm a drooling otaku over macross (which I kinda am) cuz shes japanese and you know what most young japanese females think of otaku, don't you? I think at the moment she has the impression that I'm cool or something and shes someone I definately want to try to stay with ...sometimes I think it pays not to be too honest. Anubis Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 If you have to hide your anime collection from your GF, then it probably is not going to last. It's a part of you, and if she can't get past that then it is doomed. My girlfriend has seen my mass of dvd's and my Gundams/valkyries, and while she thinks its a little funny, she accepts it, and is willing to give a few shows a try. She has boxes of collected barbies so she cut me some slack. I just need to figure out what to show her first to ease her in and try to get her hooked. She has said she wouldn't mind seeing something old school. She said she liked Voltron and Robotech as a kid. Thank god. So I will start her off with either DYRL or the first disc if SDF Macross TV, followed by M+. After that maybe sample disc 1 of Escaflowne or a Miyazake film. I doubt right now that M7 is her style, and there are other shows I would rather showcase for her first. Eventually I may toss in Crest of the Stars. With school and FT work we don't have a lot of time to see each other, so I am in no rush to do the anime intro. Plenty of time for that. First I need to get her to see the first matrix again, then reloaded, so I can take her to revolutions next week.
Keith Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 Just tell her you'd rather watch that then the typical aaron spelling crap, american idol, reality show of the week, shitty sitcom, etc. If she can't understand that, just say "shut up bitch, and get me some potato chips."

Way to be diplomatic.. Keith is right, just leave out the part where you tell her to shut up... You might consider a compromise... She watches SDF-Macross if you watch one of her chick flicks. Don't show her M7 cause she will question your orientation and that is worse than her just being iritated.
bandit29 Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 "shut up bitch, and get me some potato chips." single huh? lol The aftermath of this topic header Just started watching M7 with my GF and now I'm A) single B) sleeping on the couch C) divorced D) out of the closet

In all honesty I probably would rather watch M7 than some of the crap on tv these days. But I have far better than that to watch as well, especially to try to get someone at least interesed into anime. M7 is in no way, no how, something something you throw out there right away, unless you want your GF to go and then your evening plans go a little .
ewilen Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 I've been wondering if there might be a correlation between liking/hating M7 and liking/hating other anime. For example, even though I wasn't crazy about the initial eps., I could at least tolerate them. Now, could that be related to the fact that I do like Sailor Moon, Kimagure Orange Road, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Dirty Pair (the little that I've seen), and I think Ah My Goddess and Tenchi Muyo are at least "okay"? All are kinda silly and many of them are character-oriented school comedies. I like a lot of other stuff, but of the lot, those anime seem like they might be the best indicators of whether you'll like M7 or not.

Why are you beating around the bush... Just ASK if you want to feel my muscles. M7 isn't necessarily as gay as it is lame and sad... also a pedophile show as it attracts its sick audience with panty shots of a 14 year old girl.

Mechamaniac Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 LOL, My wife has watched DYRL, and Mac Plus with me, she liked em both well enough... However, I think I will ultimatel turn her away from Anime. The first non-Macross anime she watched with me was Jin-Roh. Her comment? - "Well, that was....DARK". Second - Grave of the Fireflies - After she stopped crying - "Goddamn it, I'm going to stop watchig this stuff if it is always so sad. Now, I have her watcing Bebop - I've been playing off how lighthearted the series is thus far, I just don't have the heart to tell her how it ends. So, after episode 26, and her third depressing anime in a row, I think she will swear off it forever.
Agent ONE Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 ...The first non-Macross anime she watched with me was Jin-Roh. Her comment? - "Well, that was....DARK". ... One of my ex-GFs said the same thing about Jin-Roh... I loved it though. My current GF likes anime more than I do.
