I wouldn't go that far.........But I will say that they have their own beauty.....

The reason why we still buy them is because with a little bit of love they can look just as good as the 1/48.

Uh, no, I dont think so, but if you were to smash them into eachother the yammy would lose, Plus the bandais are very easy to transform and play with

I buy VF-1's because they are neat, they go in my display cases. I myslef don't "play" with my toys outside of taking them out of the box and putting them in the case. To me they are nothing more than fancy display pieces. You don't play with model kits and I think of most of my toy collection as model kits, something to be looked at.

... then again I never was a big "toy" kid when I was younger. I usually put my really nice toys on the shelf and looked at them rather than playing with them. My sucky toys got the business end of a BB gun in the back yard or the 'splodie end of a Black Cat. I was one of those weird kids that played with soccer balls, footballs, baseballs and my bike outside... the whole "action figure" and "inside toy" thing was very foriegn to me outside of one or two pieces (I had a vast collection of those Star Wars Micro things when they first came out). I never really got into action figures until I was much older and then it was mainly for the "adult collector" thing rather than the "let's go down to the basement and play with our Star Wars men" thing. Now all the toys I own are either behind glass or locked away out of sight somewhere.

Personally, I was never fortunate enough to experience the chunky monkey magic back in the 80s, so I don't see the attraction. The easy answer, though, is nostalgia combined with durability. You could beat someone to death with a Bandai and the sucker would still be in mint condition (though it's victim would be thoroughly dispatched).

1) had a joons valk in the 80s - and it STILL was the best toy i ever had. you could put an eye out with that gunpod!

2)i'm afraid to touch my yammie - the legs might fall off.

3)once you go chunky, you stay with the monkey.

oh, and 1/48s are too pricey atm, and takas are too. so bandai reissues are what i have/can afford.

vintage stuff is vintage which has appeal for those who lived in the sticks rowere poor back in the day and never had a vallk besides jetfire.

re-issue rocks because they are damn near the same AND parts can be looted to repair the vintage stuff....

"well I have a vt-1 ostrich unbroken but missing it's tail... where to find a tail..."

in addition... all us old schoolers with 1/55 armor now have a variety of valks to put it on.

playing with toys... playing with the opposite sex... as long as your satisfied. There are actual females on this site, so I've heard, which implies your playthings can get along

I'm married myself and let me tell you "why valks are better than women...

Valks don't mind if you have a squadron.

valks don't spend your money.

valks never complain when you play with them.

you can finger a friends valk.

you can put a valk in a box on your shelf and leave it there for years.

you can beat a valk to death, bury it in a shallow grave, and not go to jail.

you can buy valks off ebay.

valks come with instructions.

you can sell a valk and it won't complain.

valks don't feel ignored.

valks don't care what you smell like.

valks stay where you put them.

valks don't cheat.

you can get replacement parts for a damaged valk.

you can custom your valk.

you can trade valks with friends and not get a VD.

you can ship a valk ups.

you can tell if a valk is truely a virgin

you can get a bootleg valk... I suppose you could get a ... nope..not gonna go there  ."

graham... You really don't want to know about the custom you inspired... And I bet I won't even be able to post pics when I'm done!!!

i just bought my first valk, i had a jetfire when i was a kid, (still a kid i guess, and always will be), anyways i was driving to the store and my younger brother was checking it out, (cause i had just picked it up from the post office, btw it is a 1/55 bandia i got of ebay for $27.99!!! it rocks it is like the won hikaru flew. anyways he was checking it out as i was turning a corner and it slipped out of his and and made imediate contact with the ground, fortuatle it missed the pavement by a few inches and landed in the snow. It survied and rocks.

It probably would have survived even if it had hit the pavement!

Hey, do you know what this thread has done?? Well, it's actually made me even MORE of a kid. Yeah, that's right. I was going through some boxes -- where it seems all my old stuff will PERMANENTLY remain -- as I keep moving around, and I came across a whole batch of old toys, TFs and stuff. I think I'll start another topic about the version of Prime which I found...

Anyway, I got out my old 1990 Super 1S reissue, and I compared the "Fireability" of its gunpod to that of the recent reissue 1/55s. I was impressed with the 1S, but the Hikaru 1J and CF were incredible! They made fat dents in the polystyrine packaging, and when I shot at the closed door the missile ricocheted right over to the other side of the room! Now THAT'S a TOY!!

Gotta love the might of the 1/55 Gunpod. Best. Toy. Evarrr.

:D

Playing with them!?

who plays with these things?

i think we may be taking the nastalgia thing a bit too far?

please tell me that you guys only display these valks...if not to preserve them ...then well, beacuse grown people playing with toys is just plain wierd!!!!!!

collect but don't play!

I play with them!

I actually buy every valk 2 times, one to play with and one to keep for my collection.

And as for the Bandai valks, I much prefer them than te yamatos, because Bandai are great to play with.

If you try to play with a yamato things will start falling of all the time, which is annoying.

The bandais on the other hand are simply marvellous.

I can't speak much for the CM from experience - I had a Jetfire once that I modded into a 1-S but it was ripped limb from limb by a neighbor. I do remember it's transformation being pleasingly SOLID. I recieved my first 1/48th recently (cheers) and I love it to death (and I do play with it - and can say with some pleasure that it isn't anywhere near as delicate as I had feared). Nonetheless, I would have to say the CM's solid locking joints do beat out the Yamato's ball joints anytime - you shouldn't have to fiddle with the shoulder so much to get it to slide out from under the valk! Bandai valks are for the pure child at heart - it doesn't have to look perfect when you have imagination, it just has to be fun to play with! As an adult I would pick the Yamato - it is just so beautiful, and my play-time isn't rough enough to damage it - but for those who are truly a child inside I imagine the Chunky Monkey's just can't be beat. I mean come on - the gun pods can shoot the eye out of the neighbors cat!

Too bad Jetfire didn't have a firing gunpod, he might have been able to save himself.

I know a lot of people don't understand how grown-up intelligent men can collect toys and play with them - but I can't help but wonder - are all the so called "adult" activities really any more mature? Bowling? Bar-hopping? To me a lot of adult activities just seemed like soulless imitations of child's play. Not to criticize them, but if you think about it, a lot of that is just play without the imagination, flamboyance, and freedom of a child. So why not fly a space-craft once in a while - is that any worse than rolling a ball at some ceramic pins? Or gambling away hard earned money at a casino? I know guys that lose their shirts on a weekly basis due to their poker games. Just because society says one thing defines the activities of an adult and another thing defines the activities of a child doesn't mean that it's the truth.

I hope the person who considered it weird to play with toys isn't what I once was - a closet child. From experience I know, it's sad when you have to hide part of yourself because you don't think it will be accepted. Yes, it can make it harder to find and keep a girlfriend - but isn't it much nicer if that girlfriend likes you for exactly what you are (weird or not)?

VF-19 pilot-

Here is a freat example. Take a look at the people who cherish American Muscle Cars. Then there are those like me who like Japanese cars. There are those who like Euro cars. Who is more righteous? Who is to say that a Ferrari is better looking than a AC Shelby Cobra or a Nissan Skyline GTR? No one does. IT all depends what you like. I mean go with car tuning. Some people are all over big blocks. More displacement more torque=more HP and straight line speed. While Japanese cars are small engines lots of HP efficiency. Which is better? there are arguements for either one and they would be both right.

So be more tolerant than by saying "What are you people thinking?"

You are not the only :( , it`s too expensive for me. As for this subject it`s really a matter of tastes and opinions, no one is forcing you to love or hate Bandai, Yamato or Hasegawa !

Takatokus could take a beating.. wonder why Yamato 1/48 are not made of the same plastic???

very few valks stand up to the robust body of a takatoku/bandai

Unless 1/48 Yams come in Diecast metal!!!
