ComicKaze Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 I just spent about $200 preordering a Hikaru 1S and the fastpacks. It's going to be my first 1/48. Does $135 for a Hikaru and $59 + tax for the fastpacks sound like a good price? I know they are cheaper at TMP anime but I'd rather try to avoid customs fees for shipping them across the border (I'm in Canada). I hope I'm spending my money wisely. It's this or Masterpiece Prime but the Valk won out. Quote
VF-19 Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 Sounds like a good price. Are you quoting the Canadian price, or the conversion to US? As to being dinged, you may not be dinged if it was ordered from the US. You should check with customs on this... Quote
Göönk Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 (edited) hey i did the same but i live in france and i pre-ordered to HJL (japan) lol i'm mad. 20.000 yen + shipping + taxes. I think it's going to be something like 250 euros. (275 US dollars) but I already know i won't regret Edited November 11, 2003 by Göönk Quote
Dangard Ace Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 Customs will *ding* everything they can and then add a $5-$10 service charge on top of tax. Enjoy your new valk! Quote
Uxi Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 Not bad price at all. You could have done much worse, but think that Toy-Wave (?) site had the best prices I've seen so far... Quote
ComicKaze Posted November 11, 2003 Author Posted November 11, 2003 Yeah, that's the US price. And you get dinged by everything from customs that is worth over $20. I think the charge for something $200 US (~$275 CAD) is around 30 bucks. It happened to me with jewelry (not for me! ) and some videogames. I even asked the guy to write $20 on the customs sticker but nooooo...Canada customs was nosy and they open the package and read the actual paypal invoice which said $280 on it so they charged me full price + GST + handling. I hate it when you get things in the mail and it has that yellow "Canada Customs" tape all over it. It really reminds me of police tape because it's more or less the scene of the crime. Whenever they open packages, there's a chance they can lose things and they definetely lost the parts for a Transformers Hound I bought a few years back. I hate shipping across the border too. I lost $150 of toys (boxed Prowl and boxed Computron) back in the day because of the mail too. Tracking no-longer works once it reaches the border. It got to the border and after that, I had no idea where the package went. I just know it just never showed up at my door and Canada Post wouldn't reimburse me because of some loophole in their legal documents. Quote
Chowser Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 the one time I shipped to Canada, I sent the entire thing marked GIFT, changed the paypal invoice to read GIFT and had VOID in a watermark in the background and then regular mailed the real invoice seperately. The guy got it, and it was of course, opened and rummaged through by customs, but he never got charged. Quote
valkyrietestpilot Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 the price you paid isn't too bad. like the others said, you could have done worse. although,i live in the u.s. & did enjoy tmpanime's excellent prices Quote
skunkobot Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 When I was in England all we really had to do was put gift on the label, and we were all set. Even if there was an invoice. What, they're going to charge you money for receiving a present? Quote
Battlepod Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 That´s a good price and if it´s gonna be your fist valk your will be very happy with it. Just enjoy it! Quote
bsu legato Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 Kevin at Valk-Exchange marked my FAST packs as a "gift," and the customs boogeyman left me alone. Quote
Sumdumgai Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 hey i did the same but i live in france and i pre-ordered to HJL (japan)lol i'm mad. 20.000 yen + shipping + taxes. I think it's going to be something like 250 euros. (275 US dollars) but I already know i won't regret Expect to pay something around €30-45 customs fees. I did when I got a shipment from HLJ for a similar price. Thankfully when I got one of my valks from Valkyrie Exchange, no customs fee, it was marked as gift! Quote
ComicKaze Posted November 11, 2003 Author Posted November 11, 2003 (edited) Marking as gift doesn't cut it anymore. I think they've caught on to me. Either I'm charity or a rockstar with lotsa adoring fans with all the "gifts" I'm receiving. My experience is that if they open it, and they see a price tag or a receipt or an invoice, they will charge you for it, and charge you for their time (plus all applicable taxes and duties to the full extent of the law). Göönk Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 VAT... 20% here. It hurts. taxes (VAT+fees) are approximately 25-30% here (france) Sometimes, they don't ask for VAT or fees. I don't know when they considere we have to pay. Maybe it depends on the size of the package OH MY GOD ! should have ordered the 1/60! Quote
Nightbat Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 (edited) getting a 1/48 from HLJ here to Holland inc. shipping at a 19.5% tax is around €190,- but believe it or not, getting one domesticly (belgium) the Valk alone is €180,- after that there is still the shippingcost edit: it happened to me twice that a 1/60 wasn't charged with shipping I believe both were on sale at HLJ being lower than the 7800 Yen usual price Edited November 11, 2003 by Nightbat® Quote
Valkryie 13 Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 We'll I live in Indonesia.. geographically, i was closer to HK than most of U guys in Europe or States but...... it cost me around USD 285 to get VF-1S + FP from HK to here no taxes though since it was marked as a gift. man.... this is sucks.... But..... I'm a proud owner of 1/48 VF-1A Low Vis, VF-1A Max + FP and VF-1S + FP is on its way.... plus a 1/60 and VF-11B Quote

Yep, sometimes then ask fee EVEN for a gift marked package , sometimes they don't. It depends mostly on the size/weight of the package (taxing a lill' package is not worthy enough but with a big/heavy one they do not hesitate) Quote
Hubert Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 i was lucky last year when for xmax i bought the 1/48 hikaru 1-a with the soc 01r, in france i had nothing to pay and it come by ems , maybe the custom are cool during xmas time . The problem with cutsom in France is that the price for making a file about you pay custom costs more than custom. i m very lucky with french custom, i only paid custom for the soc dancougar (the box was big) and for 2 bandai vf 1/55. If the mail is sent by ems you ve more chance to be caught by custom than classic sal. I sent an email to Valkyrie Exchange a week ago about shipping, and he said he send as gift, so for european people I guess he s the best for buying valk. Quote
hevangel2 Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 I live in Canada, and I hate the Custom too! They open up my VE-1 package, and make a big cut on the box of my VE-1!!! Lucky that I'm not one of those MISB collector, the toy itself is fine though. Instead of marking gift in the package, you can also mark it as return good and ask the other guy not putting the invoice in the package to avoid custom fee. Once a while, the seller forgot to mark "gift" or "return good" on the package and I end up have to pay the custom fee. I don't mind paying the tax, that's part of my citizenship duty, but why the hell I have to pay $7.5 handling fee? What justify the postal office charge me this outragous handling fee? Quote
wm cheng Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 We are just a country of "sheep"!! I can't understand how they can tax us 50% income tax at the source, then another 15% on GST and PST on just about everything we buy!! What citizen duty? - that's jury duty and voting, not giving another portion of our income to a foriegn made toy that the government had absolutely nothing to do with. Even if Yamato exported, I'm sure our Canadian Government wouldn't allow it into the country because the box isn't in French also!! Sorry, I just had to rant! I hate the taxes and customs duty, I had once had to pay $90 in taxes and customs on a $100us item!! and for what! boy! its a long way down from this soap box Quote
Nightbat Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003 how about "Taxing taxes"? happens alot here on certain items like multimedia first you get charged a custom's-tax (this is between 0% and 14%) this is added to anything with a value over €22 and yes people they include shipping costs!!! and over that you get the VAT, not seperatly example: so it's 100 (lets say 70 value 30 shipping)+ 0.5% customs + 19.5% VAT=120.097 if it were seperate it would be 100 + 0.5% 100 + 19.5% = 120 Yes it's 0.097 but by constitution it's actually illegal to do that so they're still ripping me 0.097 cts off!!! now think about buying a €400 Videocamera add €30 shipping and 14% customs tax! now add VAT <_< I don't mind paying taxes over the things I buy, but sheesh... this is pure an utter BS Quote

glane21 Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003 Wow, must really suck living in a socialist - oriented country doesn't it guys? They tax the hell out of you poor bastids. They tax us plenty in the US too but at least they don't bend us over on imports as well. Are there still customs taxes from the US to Canada after NAFTA? Quote

And there are still taxes and import duties on everything. Especially now when the United States are increasingly becoming defensive and isolationist, Bush has (illegally) raised tariffs on everything from lumber to steel and the WTO has had to intervene on many occasions to protect the economies of foreign countries who depend on trade with the US. I don't know when they considere we have to pay. Maybe it depends on the size of the package OH MY GOD ! should have ordered the 1/60! Alors bonne chance. Quote
Nightbat Posted November 16, 2003 Posted November 16, 2003 Omelette dü Fromage -sorry, couldn't resist Quote
