Ah that is good news, glad to see M3 won't be lost to us fans. Very nice of you Seto to host the site.

Posted (edited)

I'm working hard. The site is ready for presentation, I just need a few hours to upload it. Should be tomorrow at the latest. As always, I will post the latest news promptly.

Btw, please be sure to be courteous once the M3 is back online. Seto is graciously providing hosting services to me at no charge. It would be terribly bad manners to burden him with high bandwidth should a bunch of people start extracting the entire website once it's back online. This is doubly impolite if you continue to do so after each new update as well. Rest assured that even if I'm not working on my website, I intend to maintain the M3 online indefinitely so it will never just "disappear" permanently, at least not without my knowledge. I may not be around every day, but I am very aware of it's status and I will answer visitor e-mails sent directly to me even if I'm absent from message boards and not able to answer PMs. If some visitors are adamant that they need a copy on their hard drive, let's talk about alternate arrangements. For now, please no site extractors. Thank you.

's no big deal... I've got a lot more storage space and bandwidth than I need, so it doesn't hurt my feelings any to donate some of the excess to a worthy cause.

I didn't comment on all of this as I just hadn't visited the site in a while, but good to see it will be running again. Good to see you back as well March. M3 has always been the best way for me to totally geek out about the various engineering facts related to practically every Valkyrie in existence. I also rather enjoy that Thrust to Weight ratio chart.

Yo, welcome back March. I kinda worried about you when you have been absent from the Net for many months, so it's good to hear you're back. :)

BTW Seto Kaiba, like your avatar. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD, SKULL FOR THE SKULL THRONE! :p

It just seemed right... particularly since "heresy" is pretty much what I was banned from Robotech.com and RobotechX for... (made all the more amusing and ironic by some of their number starting to refer to me as "the fact god". I haven't quite convinced them to chant "Facts for the Fact God! Books for the Book Throne!" yet... but I'm working on it)

New address of the Macross Mecha Manual

I've tested several pages in all the sections to make sure everything is working and I'm happy to say the website appears to be functioning normally. There may be left over bugs or the odd missing image or two, but most of it looks good. If there are any problems, please feel free to send me notice. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience. Hopefully the new server functions well and the updated material will serve as a compensation for any inconvenience. Thank you.

Note: I still have yet to go through my PM box and answer all the messages people have sent me. Once I get the chance, I will do so. Most of the message appear to be many months old, but I will briefly respond to each message anyway.

Special thanks to again to Seto Kaiba as well as Uxi and Ignacio Ocamica who generously offered their help

Major Update

Macross Mecha Manual is now on a new server

Welcome back to the new home for the Macross Mecha Manual. I apologize to any worried fans regarding the brief undeclared shutdown of the Macross Mecha Manual that happened just recently. We have had to switch internet providers and our old site went down a little faster than anticipated. However, thanks to Seto Kaiba we have found a new home on the internet. While I haven't been actively working on this website for some time, I did complete a significant amount of work last year prior to my extended absence. This update to the Macross Mecha Manual features 12 new profiles and all previously unreleased work.

Very special thanks go out to Uxi and Ignacio Ocamica of the Macross World forums for graciously offering webspace for the M3. And of course, thanks again to Seto Kaiba.

This previously unreleased material was a major housekeeping effort, featuring extensive revision of colored art and replacement of uncolored line art pictures with revised art. In the past I have often gone to excess with vivid colors, a bad habit which has accidentally produced an almost strobe-like glow for some of the more colorful palettes. To correct this, I have desaturated and/or darkened many colors schemes, especially those using a majority of red or yellow. These revisions also help to differentiate like-colored mecha while producing an appearance more true to the animation. The VF-17 Nightmare profiles will be the most recognizably corrected art as part of this update. In the non-colored portions of the website, I have deleted hundreds of individual pieces of black and white line art that were terribly sub-par. These old pictures have been replaced with superior quality scans and the art has been collected into far fewer pictures per profile (in some cases, only a single picture for each entry). This method of presenting line art is more efficient, saves space, makes navigation easier and permits fans to examine/compare vehicles from multiple angles on a single page.

Unfortunately updates have been few and demands of life have called my attention elsewhere for this past year. I will make every attempt to continue revising and updating the Macross Mecha Manual. However please be aware at this time I am still unable to prioritize the M3 and future updates will appear infrequently. I'd like to thank you all for your concern and support during our recent technical troubles. Your continued interest in the Macross Mecha Manual makes the effort worthwhile.

Actually, that reminds me... now that we have a canon thrust figure for the VF-2SS Valkyrie II we need to get that added onto the T/W ratio chart. Guess that's one more item to the to-do list...

The old list also didn't have the VF-25 or 27 T-W figures because Marchy made it before those were released. So if it is to be amended, might as well add all known figures, heheh.

Hmm.. one might think the VF-2SS would have even more power than the 25 being at a later year. However it is an alternate universe so maybe not. I'll have to wait and see what it is I suppose.

It is done.

And on the third day, March rose again...

Thank you.

I just completed a stress test on the server, and it looks like everything should hold up well even if we start getting huge traffic levels. About the only way I foresee any complications or problems is if traffic starts to exceed 5,000gB a month, which doesn't seem particularly likely. Since Macross2.net was largely disused while I prepared to switch my project to another hosting service and domain name, the jump in traffic caused by M3 going back online was easily measurable... over 1,000 hits in the three hours since your announcement was posted.

Well, I'll do my best to make sure those updates aren't wanting for new information... I made one little change... since the M3 stuff isn't in the main directory, I changed m3-index.html to index.html so the splash page will auto-load if some visitors just type www.macross2.net/m3/ in order to prevent directory browsing.

Just so everyone's aware, in the unlikely event that something goes awry with this new location for the Macross Mecha Manual, the quickest way to get it fixed will be to notify me by private message or e-mail rather than blitzing Mr March's inbox. I'm blessed with a bit more free time, so whatever's wrong I can probably get it fixed within a few hours. To be safe, I'll make sure Mr March has my cell phone number so we don't have a repeat of the service going down and the domain owner being unreachable.

Hmm.. one might think the VF-2SS would have even more power than the 25 being at a later year. However it is an alternate universe so maybe not. I'll have to wait and see what it is I suppose.

No dice... predictably enough, Macross Chronicle continues Macross II's fetish for the number 2 by having the VF-2SS's main engine thrust rating be approximately twice that of the VF-1S (25,600kgf as opposed to 12,500kgf) and doesn't list the thrust rating for the two sub-engines. All told, the sizable jumps in engine power in the main timeline are/were something that emerged after Macross II was made.

I wanna see some specs on the Metal Siren!

Don't worry, that is on the to-do list... I've got the bulk of the data pulled together already, March and I just haven't sat down to go through it all, and there's the possibility that Chronicle might add to it in the immediate future.

Right now, we have a more immediate concern in fixing a couple of missing pieces of art on the site proper. Nothing major so far, but I'm doing a link-by-link inspection of the whole thing to make sure everything's present and accounted for.

Yay! its back! Time to time I really like to visit M3 just to geek out at line art and other stuff... just like the mags I have at home :)

Thank you all for your support. I'm glad you're happy to see the site up and running properly. I've fixed a few minor problems and made a few corrections:

  • Megaroad-01 profile updated
  • Macross Galaxy updated with Chronicle information (as was initially advertised in the update notice, but not completed)
  • uploaded missing animations in the "For Fans Only" section
  • Updated AIF-9V (V-9) Ghost Fighter

As time permits, I'll update the M3 with as much Macross Chronicle information as is available. This will be the priority for the next while.

Really? I think they're all improvements except perhaps the Tomahawk II.

Posted (edited)

The extremely 90s pastel, multi-tone colour schemes don't help, I suppose. Funnily enough the Tomahawk II is my favourite of the bunch. The MacII Phalanx looks like a walking pot-bellied stove... with missile racks.

Eh... regardless of whether or not you find them aesthetically pleasing, it would be remiss of us not to cover them as thoroughly as humanly possible... a process that, where Macross II is concerned, usually involves Mr March doing his best to glean the necessarily details from my frothy-mouthed rantings on the various obscure sources I've spent the last few years tracking down. In any event, I'm currently muddling through the Mardook forces Zentradi-use mecha sheet in Chronicle, with the destroid sheet next in the queue... (followed, in the near future, by the GERWALKroid/VF-XX Zentradi Valkyrie sheet).

Posted
Y'know, I never really realized just how ugly Macross II destroids were until now...

Destroids are supposed to look ugly, like most real world tanks do these days...

I find the Macross II destroid designs great and very very cool looking. In fact, I'm convinced the Cheyenne and Cheyenne II designs were influenced by them... B))

Posted

I appreciate the ugliness of the destroids in all the Macross productions. They make for a nice contrast to the beautiful and sometimes un-military/overly-stylized look of the Valkyries. Most military machines are ugly and thus the destroids often feel more real. Regardless, Macross gives us the best of both worlds, so it's all win.

Hopefully more ugliness and beauty will follow :)

When are you going to add Astro Plan to the M3?

Posted
Oh great now Gubaba has traumatized Mr. March.

Oh March the Battle 13 article is bit confusing on who used the Battle 13 in the final stage.

http://www.macross2.net/m3/macrossga/battle13.htm

You might want to add the AIF-9B Ghost to the list as well.

It seems to me Battle 13 was the inspiration for Battle Galaxy's Ghost spamming.

Oh yeah, that write-up was given to me by a forum member and I never finalized it. I'll have to do that.

So... Is there really going to have an Astro Plan section in M3? I can't wait to see you do it, March, even just for the lols. :D

LOL! The series is such outright theft, it's almost an honor to Macross. Perhaps it does deserve some profiling :)

Btw Ang, you need to update the address for the Macross Mecha Manual link in your signature.
