That's too bad it's too big! Another idea would be to have the vectored version cut out of styrene sheets; hmmmm... -MT

Right a PM about this thread has prompted me to get this ball rolling again.

I have test printed this out in its native size it fits onto A3 paper.

I have converted one page to an AI file and submitted it to my friend who can print it on styrene in the same method I was going to use where I used to work.

He's going to get back to me with an idea of costs.

If I'm going to set this up for everyone I'll need a list of who's in and also I'm going to ask Brian from Redlion Design for final permission.

I'll post back here and ultimately start a new thread if it all pans out ok.

At 1\350 it is only 4.2 feet long and would be in scale with alot of the other 1\350 goodies out there.

Since this thread has been restored to current status: ^THIS!!!

I won't say that I would ever attempt this, but it seems a shame not to try since I have the space. Lots of 1/350 goodies eh? I must consult eBay. B))

Well I have not heard back from my friend but thats probably my fault for firing off an email to late after he went home for the weekend.

I'm guessing scaling it up to 1/350 would require moving parts onto more pages as there wouldn't be enough room. Heck maybe even have to go to A1 paper size. At that size it would be Grebblies heaven. :)

What size would it be in 1/1000?

And did someone mention cost or did I miss it..?

A 430 meter ARMD should run about 17 inches in 1/1000 scale. (430 meters=16,929 inches divided by 1000 =almost 17 inches).

And nothing has been discussed about price yet. He is still working on getting the files into Vector format. That is before determining how much materials &Shipping will be before deciding on a price point for the various scales that everyone is after. Shipping on a 1/350 version is going to be ill due to the size requirement. The flight deck has to be a minimum of feet long. It might be easier to just make the vector file for purchase and let us deal with the scaling and materials ourselves.

Vectors have been made and I am waiting on a cost for producing them in batches of ten or more.

Once there I can work out a cost equally divided against everyone who wants one and plus the individuals postage cost.

Hopefully loads of people will want one and that will bring the costs down :)

I did ask him for an idea of a cost for one based on and A1 print size which would be roughly 4 time bigger than the one I was planning.

I'll measure my test print when I get home and post up some parts based specs for you all.

I have measured the flight deck on my test print, I thought the flight deck would be the most definable part. It is 14.5 cm long

I hope this will help anyone wanting to work out scale.

My suggestion is to print out the test PDF pages from a few pages back onto A3 and you could work out a scale up from there.

I have not built one yet.. but judging on the dimensions of the deck measurement it is around 1/20000.

Cheers!

But I somehow doubt that enough people would be intrested in a 1/350 to get a discount lol.

That does not change my desire for one mind you...

That would be cool at that scale. Let me know what you find out in terms of printing it on styrene.

I still want to do the rest of the body but not enough time in the day!!

Thanks again for all of the comments! Please share pictures of any builds you have done!

No annoyingly I have tendered this out to two companies I know through work and am waiting to hear, I'm going to approach some others as I want this made.

I have been working on the files to make them easier to use and better for printing, for both the printers and cost to us.

I would be very interested in this. 1/700 scale would be a good compromise. Smaller and more manageable than 1/350, but still compatible with a lot of model ship building supplies and accessories.

I'm looking into making this in 1/285 scale. my current issue is to print out the plans at that scale. each page ends up 59.5 inches by 99 inches.

the final ship will be 59.4 inches long, 23.7 inches wide at the widest parts. the main hull will be 16 inches wide.

I have got illustrator versions of the pages, you could separate out for he parts onto more smaller pages, that would help.

On the printing it out on plastic, I'm waiting to hear back from another potential supplier, as the previous ones are not bothering to get back to me. This particular one was recommended to me by one of my clients, as its something they specialise in.

I can't believe this thread has been going since 2009. I'm still trying to get someone to print this on 1-2 MM. styrene.

The amount of companies who say they can do it then don't bother to get back to me is soul destroying.

I have another company in mind but will only be able to get to them the next time I am off work on holiday, so that's not going to be for a little while, but when I spoke to them they said they could do it and have done similar before.

I will of cause let you all know as soon as I can.

Printing on styrene is easy, it seem printing on 1-2 MM styrene seems to be the hard bit, for all the suppliers I have contacted.

Thats a Large Format Flat Bed UV Curable Resin printer.... VERY big dollars.

Follow the link to see the minimum material thickness (usually 3mm) that they can do.

For scale that printer table is about 1200 wide by 2400mm long.

HOWEVER.... you COULD get clever with some backyard engineering and build a table yourself that runs a low power laser engraver (used for wood branding) to "write" your image onto your styrene.

See here for what can be marked or cut

Then there is actual styrene laser cutters...

Engraving on styrene is great! I'm in the middle of trying to get a kit out doing that myself. A friend has a large table and it took some calibrating, but we got it to work both doing both raster and cutting. We got engraved panel lines on cut-out pieces. I'm tempted to get a small engraver myself! - MT

The type of print I have been told would work best is direct substrate printing. The machines are top dollar and not many companies have one. Both the companies we supported where I used to work who did print on vinyl didn't have one.

That said one of them has put me in touch with one that can. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone, I love sharing kit building and techniques with you all. Here Is a PDF without instructions to show the layout pattern. I score the edges with a non working ball point pen. Use legal size paper for it. Sorry for no instructions or a scoring diagram.

No, no he diseñado el cuerpo principal SDF-1. ((Translated) No, I haven't designed the main SDF-1 body!)

This is not dead, still keep coming back to it. Several suppliers who I contacted have now gone out of business. But I am searching for one that can print it on 2mm styrene.

Quite a few have said they can then cant. Some can but the price they want I coukd have a go at building a printer and print my own and still be better off.

Have you thought of buying a Cricut? If the plastic sheet is thin enough, it may be able to do it.
