sh9000 Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 Damn I want these types of boxes for my HMR. Maybe somebody who makes custom toy packaging can make some. Quote
jenius Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 I expected it and I like it... Not the toy, but the box. KC and Bandai are kicking themselves for not doing it first. Quote
jvmacross Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 Nostalgia is my Kryptonite.... Is this the 2019 SDCC exclusive this year? Have a link to the pic? Quote
Slave IV Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 The box is worth more than the toy inside. I suppose one could buy one and put the HMR inside. Quote

sh9000 Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 Looking forward to seeing how it looks with HMR when you get one @jvmacross. Quote
Smiley424 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 (edited) Going to SDCC and I can try to pick them up if anyone is interested. Let me know, no guarantees. I like the box, but the toy itself looks cheap compared to the HMRs. Edited July 3, 2019 by Smiley424 Quote

nightmareB4macross Posted July 8, 2019 Author Posted July 8, 2019 Might be a good idea to scan pictures of the original gift sets and make your own custom boxes for your HMR. Quote

Please let me know. Quote
jenius Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 Getting Funko exclusives at SDCC is quite the undertaking! Every year I'm glad I don't have to try. Quote
Smiley424 Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I picked up one Toynami VF-1S GBP-1S set for sale. Cost plus packaging and shipping. I will go by first to pm me. I won't ship out until Monday at the earliest and will be paying FedEx/UPS to pack and ship as I am not local to SoCal. I probably won't check here again until around 4pm PST. Quote
Lorindor Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 News from SDCC: Jamie Sullivan, the artist that made the retro style box art, mentioned in passing that there will be a line of retro style boxed toys that apparently will include Destroids. At around 17:20 : Quote

Mazinger Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I find the lack of applause at the announcement licensing extension amusing. You'd expect that if the audience was really enthusiastic about the prospect they would have treated it as a "win" and cheered. Quote
Chronocidal Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 (edited) I'd be interested to see how those trays fit an HMR valk. And maybe some high-res scans of the boxes for some editing. Edited July 19, 2019 by Chronocidal Quote

I don't care enough to spend that kind of money on a box. Quote
nightmareB4macross Posted July 20, 2019 Author Posted July 20, 2019 Very sad when the value of a box outweighs the zero value of the product. It is funny how knockoffs are becoming more valuable than the originals. Quote
jenius Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 I was surprised the boxes also have the old Takatoku texture to them. Quote
jvmacross Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 So looks like Toynami is re-releasing their 1/100 VFs with retro Takatoku boxes..... And Destroids apparently....think I'll wait and see what Kitz Concept does. Quote
easnoddy Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 And yet they won't make something fans want, decent, limited SDC toys. No, we get largely gashapon garbage. Quote
twich Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 from Jenius' review, the Kitzconcept toys, while there were some flaws, seem rather decent, for the price. I am waiting to see what the VF-1J turns out like, since for some strange reason, this was one of my favorite VF-1 toys from Macross Quote

Box looks nice but this is desecration of a long lost and prestigious company. Like placing a steaming pile in a Ferrari and calling it an accessory. Toynami has no shame. Sig worthy. Quote
jvmacross Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 So I went and bought one of these. I can't say much about the toy that hasn't been said already....I probably will just leave it MISB as I am sure there are zero improvments to the actual toy...not sure if they tossed in pilot figs, but that would be the only thing I would want out of the box. I have another GBP from their "stealth" set, which I believe was another SDCC exclusive...and you would not be missing anything by not owning one. The only reason I or anyone else half-way interested in these releases would be the nostalgic factor...and by that I mean the obvious nod to the old-school Takatoku boxes and box-art. For the box alone, Toynami does go all the way and executes the look flawlessly. The box basically is a "what-if" look at what could have been a Takatoku 1/100 release of their 1/55 VF-1S GBP combo set... Anyway, it is an awesome recreation of the old-school Takatoku boxes...the illustrations, the text, the fonts...right down to the textured feel of the actual box. Again...this is pure 100% nostaligia heroin shot straight into your veins. With more similar packaging announced for the rest of their tired lineup of 1/100 VF-1's....I may be hooked enough to continue buying these...I'll definitely get the Retro VF-1S Super Combo set now... I have no idea where any of my HMR GBP's are at the moment...so hopefully someone else can see if they fit into these boxes. Quote
tekering Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Are the spelling ("Zentredi," "Cammander") and grammatical mistakes ("However he originally") intentional, or just typical Toynami QC? Quote
jvmacross Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 I'm going to say the "engrish" is part of the overall nostalgia created for this release...regardless of whether it was intentional or not! Quote
jenius Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 They also spelled "gigantic" wrong differently on both recaps of the story... Just adding to the charm. Quote
