Yamato $2000 DYRL MACROSS

Since Bandai is the license holder for Macross Frontier, I'm wondering if they'll make an SDF Global to compete with Yamato.

Doubt it, Bandai and Yamato don't exactly have the same target audience.

Wow, once again I'm really out of the loop on things since I'm posting about this a week later. For the last 10 years since Yamato/Toycom first announced they were getting into making Macross toys (it was 10 years ago this year that the Macross Plus toys were announced) I had been really hoping they would do a large SDF-1, especially its DYRL incarnetion. I am definitely impressed. But I will have to see how much it costs since I pretty much am not buying any individual toy (US or import) that runs over $100 these days. But maybe I'll make an exception for this...

Well your not to far out of the loop, So far as of a week later we know its a yamato 1/2000 scale SDF-1 DYRL version. Release date, sometime next year and price, speculation is around $500.00, but could change by next year!! If it looks good to you now, just think how it will look with the proper colors applied!! I think a TV add-on pack is possible if you look at it this way:

I think most people that want a TV version of the SDF-1 want the design quality and intricate detail of the DYRL design, wich, lets face it, is totally laking in the TV design wich was, IMHO, too plain and simplistic.

But instead of the ARMD's for the "arms" they want the Prometheus and Deadalus.

Agreed. "DYRL-style" Prometheus and Daedalus.

That would be awesome, but I would hate that to limit the chances the SDF version getting made. I'd rather it gets made on it's own and then have the Prometheus, Deadalus, DYRL ARMDs and TV ARMDs all be interchangeable... I can just imagine that display. I have this giagantic empty spot on my shelf ever since I took out the CRT and replaced it with an LCD on the wall... and it's begging to be filled with Macross stuff.

I never really looked into the difference of the TV version and the DYRL version of the macross but there really are a lot of differences besides just the arms. Here's pics from Mr. March's Macross Mecha Manual:

With all the extra details with the DYRL... i'm happy we're getting a movie version... =]

Are the DYRL & TV Series SDF-1 the same size or is one larger than the other? I always get the impression that the DYRL is a larger vessel over all.

The DYRL (aka 2012 Refit) is a little longer and wider than the original.

It's weird, I liked the streamlined less chunky look of the TV version, but I like the ARMDs. But then I also like the whole aircraft carriers in space thing (total Battleship Yamato reference!). IMO the greeblies on the DYRL SDF-1 and it's chunky look are just a little over the top in my opinion (though I have to say, Yamato's prototype looks more streamlined than the artwork). I also prefer the more military-gray coloring of the DYRL version over the bright white and blue of the TV version.

Looks like they will still refine the design. Just look at the bridge, it's just a shapeless block of plastic. I guess the ARMDs are finished but the main body still needs work.

I look at this whole debate about different versions and designs and i see it like this:

There is only one SDF-1, the differences in design and detail are just diferent ways to portray the same ship.

The TV "version", for example. If you look at line art it looks more detailed than the one that appears in the anime, most of the time.

Today, with 3D CG, you can make super detailed models and have a consistent look for your ship. But back in the 80's when Macross was made, it was all hand drawn. For static poses, they could draw some more detail, but when motion of any kind was involved, they would have to make several drawings and in this case the less details and greeblies they had to deal with the better.

Thats why the TV SDF-1 looks more steamlined and less detailed, most of the time.

The DYRL "version", as far as i know, was also hand drawn, but given the longer production time and bigger budget, more detailed animation was allowed.

It comes down to the type of production and schedule you're dealing with.

Also, each artist will have different interpretations of the same subject. If 10 people in this forum were to draw the SDF-1, we would end up with 10 slightly different designs, but it would still be the SDF-1.

If you follow this reasoning, the only actual diference between the two "versions" are the arms.

So, YAMATO, give the fans a figure that balances the best designs that have been made from the SDF-1 through the years, swapable "arms" and i believe you'll have a winner.

I apologize to those that are now calling me "blasphemer" or "captain obvious" for my tendency to rant.

I think the bottom line is, we love this ship and we can't wait for it to come out.

505thAirborne, I was incorrect, the DYRL version (2012 refit) is actually slightly shorter than the original TV version (1210m TV vs. 1200m DYRL), but is significantly wider (600m DYRL vs. 496m TV).

I understand you to some extent, but canonically the version portrayed in DYRL is actually based on the 2012 post-SW1 refit of the SDF-1, hence the ARMDs and other features. So there were two different versions canonically, that were as different as the DYRL and TV versions. The reason DYRL shows the 2012 Refit SDF-1 being in SW-1 is because DYRL is a "movie within a story", and similar to how Mac0 valks look more futuristic than the old TV show valks (because the animation technology is more advanced now, allowing more detail), DYRL's designs are all based on post-SW1 technology. So beyond the obvious differences in animation, the reference artwork is different because DYRL is a "dramatization" of SW-1 based on versions of the valkyries and the SDF-1 that was known when the "movie within a story" was supposed to have been made (in the 2040s).

What I'm saying is, really, that if Yamato was to "merge" the two designs in order to make everyone happy, it would probably give everyone on these boards brain aneurysms from the sheer audacity they would have to destroy known canon in order to just sell a product.

I think some of us are forgetting that in Macross Plus the SDF-1 looks like the DYRL version. I mean if the ARMDs had not got blown up early in the show these are the arms the SDF-1 should have had. It's still cannon. I know we all have fond memories of the original version but that's not the version Yamato went with. Considering that this is the version that shows up in 2 series of Macross and a movie (I know I am including Frontier when I probably shouldn't) it is probably the more popular version. So some of will cry and scream "curse you Yamato for not being old school" and some of us will be pleased and think it's the cooler version anyway. I personally like the original version better in some ways, but I watched this show when it first came out as a kid so I'm a stuck in my ways "old fart" (shoot me now! :o ). This does not mean that I am not drooling over this monstrosity.

I think the only thing that should matter is that their making a 1/2000 scale SDF-1! It's going to be 2' of beautiful plastic (and most likely some diecast) that will sit proudly on my self, once Yamato releases a price so I can determine if I can afford it or not. If I can't I'll go into my corner and cry/wimper  then hate myself for not buying one when I had a chance.

Edit: You have to admit that we will all envy the people who buy this and secretly hate them at the same time!

I was just talking about a practical design point of view, i don't even want to mess with whats canon or not.

But about DYRL being a movie made within the Macross universe, depicting the events of the 1st Space War, this is what i don't get and why i don't wanna touch what is canon or not with a 10 ft pole:

If we follow the "DYRL movie" assumption, then its based on SDF Macross wich is the real story in wich the movie is based.

The diferent SDF-1 is based on the 2012 refit of the ship. OK. What about the rest? The Zentradi (Bretai, Exedore, Bodolza, etc.) are very diferent in DYRL from their "real" counterparts. That could be justified as the DYRL movie producers wanting to give the audience scarier "bad guys". (The Zentradi in SDFM looked silly, admit it, Exedore's hair cut alone makes me clench my teeth). But in the subsequent series, wich are part of the same reality in wich DYRL was just a movie (Plus, 7 and Frontier) the Zentradi look the same as in the "movie" DYRL.

See where what is canon and what is not makes me wanna shoot myself?

Yamato's SDF-1 will make all this irrelevant because when it comes out, IT will be real and all else will be sweet anime fiction, and we will all bow before its 1/2000 magnificence and drool... :p

Sorry, since i found out this was coming out and started having sweet mecha-porn, 1/2000 plastic awesomeness filled dreams, i think i lost all capacity to old a coherent line of thought. Does it show?!

(as LOGOS pointed out below it is 1/2000 scale, so that has been edited. OOPS! :p )

Good point. Oh and it's 1/2000 scale I think not 1/20000.

All I know is I can't wait to see the final version and then I will make my decision.

As Kawamori has been quoted, "The real Macross is out there somewhere. If I tell the story in the length of a TV series, it looks one way, and if I tell it as a movie-length story, it's organized another way."

The way I understand it, the continuity is based on what happened in the TV series but with the character designs of DYRL replacing what you saw in the series. For example, you can consider Exsedol having micronized as shown in series but looking as he did in DYRL, bumpy head and all. Sometime in the space between the original series and Macross 7, he returned to his original size.

You have one to many zeros in your scale. 1/20000 would make the SDF-1 about 2.6 inches long :)

Thanks, Vostok 7. That's what I'd have been reaching to say myself but I'd never have put it so well.

BTW the image is SDF-4 Global, not SDF-1 DYRL version, judging by the colours.

I'd also just like to comment that the TV SDF-1 in that image is a "low line-count" version for longer shots. For closer work there are sketches showing sections of the ship with vastly more detail. Check the line art in Perfect Memory to see what I mean. I'm sure there are scans of that online too somewhere.

On colours - check the scans of the box art for the TV model kits. Both the cruiser and attack versions are shown as having *dark* colours - an almost indigo dark blue, and a medium-grey, not white or light grey. There are other images showing the same. It's a pretty dignified scheme. Like to think of these darker colours as being the 'official' ones, but they must just have been too hard to animate at the time.

Colors be damned! There is nothing quite as cool as punching the enemy with an aircraft carrier!

You mean punching the Enemy with the Daedalus!! B))

The Prometheus Super carrier never broke the ruby star fruit of an enemy ship!! :D

I spent an hour on my diorama and made room for this guy, so I'd better have enough money to get it.

Yamato should make available on their site a sort of papercraft download of the Macross so fans can print it out, assemble it and have a kind of 'place-holder' in their collection until the real deal arrives. :)

I suppose the danger there would be some fans might find the paper model to be sufficient to their collection needs and not buy the toy.

On that note, are there any papercraft SDF-1 templates out there?

Awesome Super Cool!!

That is one hell of a lovely ship, whether TV or DYRL version. Both kick ass. I am nostalgic for the original, but DYRL is just BADASS!! It is burly and menacing, though again, one can't beat a Macross Attack with an ARMD. That being said, once this is made, I foresee that others will make the appropriate mod and create a pair of 8 or 12 inch carriers. Hell, MechTech is making a SIX FOOT Daedalus!! Which has me gobsmacked :blink:http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=18403

It's not a far reach to actually make the appropriate scale ships, and since the two SDF's are similar enough you can have the best of both worlds. A badass SDF-1 with a Daedelus to shove down a Zentraedi throat!!

All that being said, I'll have to pass, and not just for the price. DEAR GOD!! your talking about a $1000.00 dollars for the 'model' and shipping!! NO NO NO NON NON NON ONO NONO ONONO NONONONO NON ON NO.....

Two feet is just too big for me. I'd have no place to put it. I'll scale down and buy one of the 1/5000 ships and be extraordinarily happy. Maybe the demand will be so great for this SDF-1 that the price will drop on the 1/5000! :p

Then again, there is that lovely Macross Quarter just curling that sexy flight deck my way.... :D

Ya, it's the Matchbox Hovertank.

I decided to make the space now in order to clear out/rearrange some areas on the main deck of the carrier. Things are so crowded in the diorama as it is, so I'm taking out as much non-Macross stuff as I can now while I still have some wriggle room.

A Hover Tank, whats looks like a G.I. Joe Aircraft carrier? Nice collection there!! But you have plenty of time to make room, you have another year minimum before this SDF-1 comes out. B))
