Shawn Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Really... you post a 'I got mine' and thats it? How about a couple pics inside, jeez! To think you are a co-founder of MacrossWorld, hmmph. Quote
Steady Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Hey all, I think I am finally going to pull the trigger and get the Macross Perfect Memory book after staring at pictures of it on the internet all these years. I have some of the other design books and some of the "This is Animation" books, but outside of the Gold Book, this is THE book. and the definitive book on the original series. Were/are there bootlegs? How do I know if its a first printing? Is there anything I should lookout for? I know it came with a poster. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Quote
Shawn Posted November 8 Posted November 8 old ref but here you go https://www.macrossworld.com/macross/books/series_pm.htm The prices on the legacy site are very very very old and not to be used anymore-this book could be had now for about $40-$50 There was a bootleg in the early 2000s-I think something about the color on the cover-it if was shiny or matte or gray or something was the key But even if you get the bootleg, it was excellent quality I thought, so you wouldn't go wrong either way. Again they made a million of the things, it is not considered a rare collectors item anymore with the rise of the internet. So find one and just enjoy it! examples of some recently sold on Yahoo Japan Auctions https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/closedsearch/closedsearch?p=マクロス+パーフェクト+メモリー&va=マクロス+パーフェクト+メモリー&b=1&n=100 Quote
jvmacross Posted November 8 Posted November 8 A must have book for any Macross reference book collection.... Quote

Steady Posted November 10 Posted November 10 I went ahead and bought a copy. I spent a little more than I wanted, but the seller told me he has kept it in NEW condition since he bought it in the early 80s. Now I can't wait to finally have this. I'll post some pictures when I get it. 🙂 Quote
Shawn Posted November 14 Posted November 14 A few years ago there was a Hideaki Anno Exhibition, and there was an art book release. Finally found one for a good price, so picked it up Has some great pictures throughout his history, included 3 pages of Macross stuff. If you like this art, and who wouldn't, its great. Also-it is THICK. Quote

Shawn Posted November 14 Posted November 14 I would probably say yes, since we see the Yamato being blown up at the bottom of that rough sketch, and that was from Daicon 3 which he animated. Quote

jvmacross Posted November 19 Posted November 19 Macross Plus Archives - bundled with the Macross Plus Ultimate Edition BD set The book is essentially an oversized version of the 'Archives' book that came with the last Macross Plus BD set from Japan.....it may contain some additional art, but I have not had a chance to go over both books to compare... Steady Posted November 24 Posted November 24 I finally received my Macross Perfect Memory book. The seller told me it was in excellent condition, and wow, he wasn't joking. It looks like he went back in time and bought it back in 1982. The only thing it doesn't have is the poster. But overall, I am happy that I finally own this book. Are there any plastic bags/sleeves that fit books of this size? All I can find online are bags for comic books. Quote

You can probably look for the poster on YJA or ebay.... As for book covers...maybe Michael's or Hobby Lobby can help...if anything you can find some clear cellophane to make your own custom book cover... Quote
Steady Posted November 25 Posted November 25 Yeah, maybe I'll look for the poster at some point down the line. A book cover would be ok I guess, but what I'm really looking for is a bag similar to the ones used for comics, but one that would fit thick books. I want to keep this book pristine. Quote
jvmacross Posted November 25 Posted November 25 Maybe try Amazon for a cellophane bag with seal in the size you need Quote
Steady Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Why did Mikimoto change his drawing style? If you look at his character renderings from the 80s and compare them to his work from the 90s all the way to present day, there is quite a difference. His change seems to have happened around the Macross 2 era. I think his best stuff is from Macross, Macross the Movie, and Gunbuster. I realize artists often change their styles, but many of his characters don't even look like the same people. Quote

You answered your own question....artists change their style as their choosing....ask George Lucas....lol Quote

I realize artists often change their styles, but many of his characters don't even look like the same people. If memory serves with regards to Macross 2, he was forced to do a style reminiscent of the TV series, etc. So, his character designs in Macross 2 should be considered an outlier. A better progression would be to look at how it changed from SDFM → DYRL → Macross 7 → Macross the First. Nevertheless, I wouldn't describe it as a 'changed' drawing style per se. More like an evolution. Some aspects of his art are a lot more simplified (as in easier and faster to draw), but other parts have hardly changed at all (e.g. the way he draws noses). Quote

Steady Posted November 26 Posted November 26 I don't know, I think he draws faces completely different now. Quote
jvmacross Posted November 27 Posted November 27 The original TV style for Macross is still my favorite....closely followed by DYRL....I do like his MtF style though more than some of his "elvish" looking work.... Quote
Steady Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Yes. "Elvish". That is exactly how I would describe his style now. Quote
Graham Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Artists styles definitely evolve (or in some cases devolve) over the years. I've been following some comic book artists since the 70s and 80s and there is often a huge change between their early works and later works. Quote

I would say it's not elvish looking at the moment....his new style started with Macross the First....my first reaction to it is he is making the eyes very round... Quote
