I did a search, nothing came up so i decided to make a poll on it. Anyway, you've got your best pilots poll, but who is the best singer? Remember these nominees have the power to affect galactic aramadas with just the power of their voices, unparralleled even by the mounted cannons on macross class ships.

I've put the main singers from each macross show on it, the ones that had the main screentime anyway. I was considering putting Mao on there, but she doesn't really count, as she only sings in the last episode with the villagers anyway.

For these nominees to qualify they have to possess at least 3 of the following:

1. One of the main characters in the show

2. Perform at least one of their own original songs during the show

3. Sing like a muse during a heated battle

4. Be a well known idol in their era

5. Is the main act at their own concert whereby tickets must be purchased

6. Singing vocals posess special effects such as affecting Anima Spiritia, Fold waves etc.

7. Be involved in a classic macross love triangle

I voted Ranka.

Here are my categories:

1. Song must move my heart

2. Grace (as in the characteristic, not the person!) must move my heart

3. hot body must move my heart

I would have voted Basara, but even in his assless chaps, he fails to qualify for point 3 :)

Yeah for that very reason i removed "Must be Hot" from the list, although that is usually the given, ever seen anyone ulgy in macross? it's like a hollyoaks cast.

while i realize the importance of music in macross, jpop isn't really my thing, so the music is more or less all the same bubbly gross stuff no mater which i'm watching. I do like a few from SDF but the heavy use of synthesiser and digital music always puts me off.

Naturally, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" - particularly in terms of what is physically attractive and what isn't... but here's my (totally subjective) list of ugly Macross characters:

-Exedol

-Kakizake

(could be argued to be ugly - look how Minmey reacts to him in SDFM TV when Hikaru takes him and Max to Nian Nian to show off how he's now a commanding officer)

-MISA HAYES

(Let me explain before you lynch me: I think Misa Hayes, particularly in SDFM TV, was portrayed as being an od fuddy duddy. Not hideously ugly, of course, but certainly not sexual. She was stiff, unlady like, her hair had an old fashion hair-do that basically seemed to be saying "why do I have to have hair anyways?" She hardly used make up, her face was always plane. I bet you she never tanned, and was pale and vapid like an airlock... So - yeah - Misa is "ugly" - at least in the begining. Also, check out the pics from Macross Ace - doesn't Misa look expressionless and therefore ugly? She looks like the Cameleon from Spiderman - again - all of this because she needst o look like this at the beginning for the story to work.

- Vanessa

Not exactly Hustler material. Not "ugly" - but - well - and NO, it has nothing to do with "the glasses" - she's just the kind of girl who doesn't take care of her self. Look at that hair. Where is it going? It looks like Gubaba is sitting on her head. And look how she dresses! It's totally mismatched every where. Kimy and the Swedish girl at least have good hair dos and dress well. Vanesa is the "bookworm" in a a fashion sense.

- Honey

Please don't tell me you think he wasn't ugly? :)

- Vefidas

Ugly - unless you think Miss Universe or Miss Atlas or Miss [insert Body building titel] is the pinacle of femininity.

- Graham

No, not our beloved webmaster. The Zendradi whale-empathizer-death-wish-seeker-hunter who stopped shaving, brushing his teeth and washing between his legs the minute his wife died.

- Gamlin

I personally never thought he had any sense of fashion. His hair looks like something out of a dated vampire movie, but yet he dresses like Mr. Rogers and chases 15 year old girls. Freaky :)

- Edward

American burgers...mumble mumble....

-Ranka

I think she's beautiful - but from a different point of view she could also be: a) skinny/bony/crooked little girl legs, b) no developed breast - which could potentially qualify her as "ugly"

-Ranka's Manager

SUPER BIG NEWSA! I AM NOT A STUD!

Hands down Minmay in my opinion. She was the first Idol that ended the first war, and through every series, there is a Minmay Reference.

Wow...I'll never look at Gamlin the same...

So you think the best is Basara (he is) but you voted Ranka? I don't get it...

Well - the question is about the best "songstress/songster" - not about who sings better or who has better songs (three completely different things)

If it was just a matter of who sings better, it would be just down to sound/voice/vocals - that would probably go to Bassara who has quite a range. If it was about who had better songs, then maybe Ranka, who really did have the best songs...

Although even then we'd need to define these terms better...

But since it's just "best singer/songstress" then I figured I'd vote for Ranka because she's cuter than Bassara and I'd love to go on a date with her, whereas I'd love to go to Bassara's concert - but I wouldn't necessarily want to go drinking with him.

This might be considered cheating but I think musically Kanno's best Macross work was done in Macross Plus and Kanno is my favorite music maker in the franchise. IMO, the whole mid-to-late 1990's was Kanno's peak (Macross Plus, The Vision of Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, etc). So I'd have to go with Sharon Apple as my favorite Songtres/Songster.

However, as a character, Sheryl Nome is by far my favorite idol in all of Macross.

Oh yeah - no Mylene...poor girl - always left out. Bad enough everybody has to be in Minmey's shadow - she's in Bassara's shadow all the time... but she has a PHENOMENAL singing voice -she just keeps getting crappy gigs.

If I were Kawamori - I'd make the the next installment of Macross a continuation of 7 called Mylene's Revenge. Have it feature Mylene break from Fire Bomber (with all the stereotypical rock star drama this entails) and form her own band: the Pink Love Hearts.

She really is a great singer - and under appreciated. At least in Macross Frontier, both Sheryl and Ranka got episodes and scenes to shine in. Mylene never really did - she just shined by the power of her song...

Mylene for sure. Love her distinct voice.

Carefull there Pete ;) a Coworker of mine got in trouble recently because she suggested a very light skinned collegue to do some tanning to look more attractive. The other girl got upset and filed a complaint. The coworker got sacked for discrimanatory remarks.

This is one reason I prefer Eastern Europe to Western Europe. I live in a country where twenty million women forced to look ugly for fifty years are all now eager to look like sexy vixens :)

Sheryl hits on all seven counts there, and she's the standout for being a superstar in her prime right from introduction then only growing further as a musician from there. I have to count her music on top too: I agree with Mr. March that Kanno is the best composer of the franchise and that Macross Plus had amazing music, but on the other hand only one Sharon Apple song really stuck with me so I'll have to go with Sheryl.

Posted

Kanno is excellent and all, but I still think Haneda still reigns all.

.....and why was the music in Macross Zero so forgettable?

Posted (edited)

You know, i was thinking of putting Mylene on there, but like Mao she doesn't really qualify, she doesn't really sing her own songs and really only provides backing to basara, so i guess that makes it tougher, but hey what can you do. She has talent no doubt, but being in the same band as basara really has put a cap on her being a proper songstress.

For me the decision is really hard, song wise having the best songs, i'd say probably sheryl or ranka, who have had the best choices of songs as of yet. However as a character and seeing through battles like a proper songstress, you would have to give props to minmay and basara too, probably more to basara since he is in the thick of it aswell whereas the rest are singing from a macross class ship or larger.

Nobody has mentioned sara or ishtar yet. Sara having survived a forest nuke and suceeded in waking the protoculture, which no one else has ever done with their song, but i guess others have summoned vajra and protodevlins instead.... but come on the protoculture was pretty epic. Ishtar on the other hand is a songstress for the marduk, one of many apparently, but the only one to perform to the best of her abilities ontop of an exploding macross in the inevitable face of doom, give her some props for that.

No lyrics?

Minmay. You never forget your first. :)

The thing is, Sheryl Nome is by far my favorite singer/idol, as far as character goes. but as to who is the greatest Macross Idol of all time, for the life of me i can't NOT vote for Minmay. she was the first, most legendary, paved the way for the rest, and she did it all on her own.

well you could always add her to your poll...

I think Mylene does qualify. There were a couple of Fire Bomber songs (Kimi ni Todoke and Sweet Fantasy, as I recal) where she was the singer. I also believe the two ending songs (My Friends and Dakedo Baby!) count as Mylene songs.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think that I could chose an actual favorite singer in Macross.

My vote goes to Minmay.

She got military tactic named after her, Minmay Attack and Minmay Defense. ^_^

Posted
But Basara's version of the "Minmay Attack" is the best. THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE THEM LISTEN *fire gigantic speakpod bazooka"

And who won't like a fleet full of girls?

What about Wendy Ryder? Her songs is quite good and not to mention that she's also fly in a valkyrie (in a backseat :D ). I choose Wendy instead of Ishtar (even if she appear completely nude on stage) as the MacII songstress.

But...but...Wendy didn't actually DO anything, besides sing and act dumb. Ishtar actually saved the world...

Well, she did sing, act dumb, ride a valk and performing a concert after the truce between NUNS and Marduk I don't care whether she saved the world or not, too many idols have done that already. ^_^

Good point...she may be one of the only Macross idols who DIDN'T save humanity, and thus is kind of unique.

Well, her and the green-haired "Minmay Defense" girl. And Alice Holiday. And the Jammingbirds.

But Wendy Ryder definitely looked the best in a poofy tutu.

+1 Zing!

I can't choose. I love them all. Each Idol/songtress/songster made me fall for them. From Minmay's Love drifts away, to Sharon's Information High. Hell Ranka's Ai Oboete Imasuka~Bles the little queen version had me mesmorized, and I nearly wet myself with a joygasim when I heard the Nyan~Nyan service melody. I love em all........even english fire........................................just joking.................................

As much as I love Basara, I had to vote for Sheryl, truly the greatest performer to grace Macross, or any other fiction for that matter.
