Anime erotic subculture goes mainstream

But sexually-suggestive and explicit anime like "Gurren Lagann" and "Legend of the Overfiend," is finding an eager audience of adult Americans who are drawn to the post-modern, almost post-human mash-up of playful, blurry morality found in the genre.

unbelievable.

What is best is that he totally fraks up his article's structure. You relate something by it's regional title, and then put the translation in parenthesis. But this tard first says "animation", followed by "(anime)", and then follows with the Japanese words with their Anglicised versions in parenthesis (ie- Manga [graphic books], hentai [erotic comics])...

... it's no wonder this fuk writes for M$NBC. Way to confuse the audience, dicklick.

Leave it to someone who simply wiki'd some random info and wrote an article about to present something like this. Gurren Lagann doesn't even belong in this article.

He actually interviewed a couple of worthwhile sources, notably Patrick Macias and Lawrence Eng... but the article still sucks.

One of my friends wrote a pretty piece about how poorly constructed it is, which you can read here.

I though I'd read it for a laugh. I closed it when I got to the line of maid cafes being available near LA and Canada.

Whut the heck does that mean? That the border areas of Canada are rife with maid cafes??? Holy not doing research, Batman.

Read it some time ago...didn't bother since it was trash.

Lolicon/lolicom = Lolita Comics.

And yes we all fap to pikachu and have hello kitty vibrators.

XD

If the article was a satire, it would've been funny.

Given the amount of sexy/sexual content in many American movies, TV shows and comics, its not strictly a "Japanese thing" and the article asumes all anime fans are into such things which is just pathetic. Many of us here like watching macross, but how many of us watch it for the cute/sexy content in it, if there is any. Having sexy characters in a show is no different in having a sexy actress in a TV show to boost ratings.

Eh, the article didn't bother me at all.

The mainstream media are just as clueless when they cover politics and economics, so why would reporters suddenly be wise to anime?

This is because journalists are not trained in economics - but they write about business and finance, they are not trained in political science, but they write about politics, they are not trained in anime, but they write about it...

Besides - the focus on sex says more about American culture than about otaku: namely - if you can't sexualize it, then it won't make MSNBC.

Notice this drivel:

“The appeal of Japanese pop culture [to Americans] is that it is a moral-free zone,” explains Patrick Macias, editor in chief of Otaku USA, a bi-monthly magazine with a circulation of approximately 60,000. “The ideas of good/bad, right/wrong, that duality is not present.”

Hmm...Anime is A MORAL FREE ZONE!?!?

Riiight.

There are NEVER any important moral issues brought up in anime.... suuurrreee....

Actually; you can stereotype and over-emphasize sexuality in most any genre - even traditional literature...so...whatever...

I long ago stopped reading newspapers, stopped watching the news - the mainstream media are clueless and if you want a reflection of a clueless populace: turn them on sometime...because that's all they are - mediocre...

but no reason to get angry or annoyed about it.

I'm not even going to click on the article because it will generate traffic to the site and make money. It would be good if someone who already went to the site, while you are there, took a snapshot of the page and posted it as an image, so nobody had to go to it. :D

This is because journalists are not trained in economics - but they write about business and finance, they are not trained in political science, but they write about politics, they are not trained in anime, but they write about it...

This is a good point, but also the fact that they are only going to be allowed to put stories up that they are given permission to put up. The media conglomerate is all one big business owned by the same people who have one agenda. You won't find news that goes against them so for example any subculture which doesn't profit them is a target for them to attack. Owning the news is like owning the ability to control minds: what people think, what they are allowed to see, the talking points in any debate, the messages they want to promote. (anything anti-family is cool so long as it benefits them in some way: causing destruction of morals, changing their attitudes to certain issues, deliberately misleading them through movies which are not historically accurate etc)

What it all comes down to is:

If they can profit from it: it's left alone.

If it competes with them: it's attacked.

This is why what might seem like innocent 'ignorance of a topic' on the surface is in fact an attempt to intentionally shock people and spread bad info. (possibly to benefit the in some way, drive competitor out of business, buy them for dirt cheap, then own and profit from them. Some examples described here.)

tsk tsk just another symptom of the globalisation of the world and centralisation of power. Here in Australia we don't even have an R Rating for games thanks to the idiots in power now who still think computer games are primarily children's entertainment form. And thanks to the mainstream media, parents and older generation actually believe that there is a link to videogame violence and the violence in the real world. Everytime they try to sensationalise their story by shocking people, the chance to see proper rating system so adults don't have to buy the imported uncensored game decrease, (they can get the uncensored local versions instead) because the journo doesn't know poo about what they are talking about or do enough real research. So bad info gets put out there. Videogames get demonised (just like anime or other subculture) and politicians think they are helping to protect society from some great evil by banning some new thing just to gain political points rather than looking at the real issues.

I see the same happening with anime. Just write any old bullshit that average joe wouldn't be able to look at and judge critically because they are sheeple and don't have time to question what is being passed off as the facts in the story. At the end of the day they are a business just like any other business and have no obligation to give you the truth. We all just automatically accept that the service is good quality without thinking about who gains from the lie, mistake, spread of bad info etc. Information can be bad on purpose: dumb you down, make you confused, keep your attention focused somewhere else and so you are not focused on the real issue etc. (stories that are factual and good can get pulled)

What you say is true.

however - never underestimate the power of the internet and independent journalism. I think that in time we will see the bankrupcy of the conglomorates and mass de-centralization because ultimately the more a company lies to people and cheats, the sooner it will loose its' share of the market--- EVEN if government bails it out, takes it over or helps it (because governments that do this systematically will also fall).

Might sound like whistling in the wind, but remember that even in 1989, very few people would have "imagined" that the Soviet Union could have collapsed even though just about everybody living in it and their grandmother knew it was just a matter of time.

With businesses; even big businesses - it's no different. Bad investment and spewing idiocy will lead to their demise (heck, look at AIG and the others).

So...I'm an optimist :)

Plus - we have to leave a little wiggle room for the off chance that this article isn't part of a worldwide coordinated conspiracy... but rather just results from a case of brainless journalism :)

Waahah :) I didn't know they had that! Dag - this can clearly compete with Foxnews now :)

This is hilarious stuff...particularly this article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25936129/

and this bit of advise:

No more sex in the house

(I can just see this working - mom and boyfriend having to later explain to junior why they got arrested in the parking lot...the park...the Macdonalds Bathroom...)

I couldn't stop laughing! The picture of the kid when he opens the door is just too much! Ahahahah:)

Yeah - that definitely explains why the focus on HelloKitty Vibrators and pedophilia - I mean -what ELSE would they focus on if it's in a section dedicated to sex :)

This is great! :) One thing I love about the United States is the unintentional comedy that results from American oppenness with regard to sex (aka "being open about it" is ok - as long as by openness you mean education/psychology - aka treating the subject with the proper gravitas....which of course just heightens the extent to which this subject is made taboo)

anyways - thanks for pointing that out :)

I am surprised no one has posted this horribly misinformed article on MSNBC: Sexploitation: Sexy anime goes mainstream

SHHHH!! *whispers* Don't use the word erotic in this forum, you will annoy those few but vocal puritans who think that sex is dirty!
