crasis Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Incredible episode. Was it rushed? Yes. And I suspect that had a lot to do with the obsessive "25" thing going on for the series. The last five episodes felt a bit crammed and on speed. Was there a distinct lack of resolution to the love triangle? Perhaps. But honestly, Alto's true love was always the sky. His love for that far exceeded everything, including his "duty" to his father and the two beautiful women that he always deeply cared for. More importantly, the three are closer friends than ever as a result of the events here. The open-ended nature of the romance could potentially be resolved in the film adaptation, or it could not. ::shrug:: Either way, I'm more relieved that (almost) everyone made it out alive and well. I was convinced that Ozma, SMS, Klan and Luca were goners for sure. All in all, this was the finest Macross series since the original, and truly the sequel I've been craving since the 80's. I'm trying to understand all the nerd RAGE going on on multiple forums, but it just isn't registering. In fact, before I watched this last night, I received a phone call from a good friend who had watched the live stream. "Don't even bother watching it – you'll be so disappointed!" he said, knowing how much this show means to me. I instantly felt a sickness in my stomach and thought this was going to be a Tomino ending. Imagine my relief when I finally saw it. I'm still waiting for the "disappointment" to kick in. Nope. Sorry. Not happening. I have nothing but love in my heart for this one. There were so many nods to the fans throughout this series that I began to realize something: WE are Richard Bilrer. Sort of like the Flower Girl in Macross 7, he is a personification of us - the viewer/the old school, diehard fans of the original; the people who ALWAYS ask Kawamori "Where's Minmay? Will we ever hear from her again?" We are on this quest to find out what happened to our dear friends on the Megaroad-01. It's nice to see that there's an in-universe character who is also on the same journey. I think this was Kawamori's way of saying "they are out there, and I know you guys miss them. Perhaps some day." Bilrer hoping to see Minmay is very similar to US wanting to see her. And getting that little glimpse of her in the locket was Kawamori's acknowledgment of that.

There is never any hint of a chance that maybe, just maybe, we'll learn their fate by the end of the series. Its kinda out of left field. The ending with Bilrer works if you are holding onto the same hopes as he is. But we aren't, because Kawamori didn't set it up. Only now are we all going, holy shite, what does this mean! Nexx Stalker Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 So, hum... were did the ending shown in the ep.24 preview went? See picture. I fear the Frontier movie is indeed an extended cut of the last two episodes, like it was mentioned in the news trhread some days ago.

Pretty damn clever of Kawamori if you ask me. However, I should have known when we seen his train sets and maids. Bilrer is pretty much a Zentraedi fanboy.

Kawamori didn't HAVE to set it up. It's most likely the number 1 question he is asked at conventions, by staff members, fans, etc. He almost seems annoyed when answering "what happened to Minmay??" these days. This was his way of saying "yes, guys, I'm aware you old schoolers are clamoring for some Minmay answers. Not this time, but I am aware." That's my interpretation of it, anyway. I do wish Dick had much more screen time.
Duke Togo Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I do wish Dick had much more screen time. Oh, I'm sure you do.
yaiba Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Hmmm, can't believe Sheryl got slapped... can't the poor girl just be left alone to die in peace? I wonder if I'm the only one who felt sorry that poor Grace got whacked... that was also most unfair. That slap was payback for all the Sheryl lovers/Ranka haters....ain't it a b#tch! No, I too felt bad for Grace. She was one of the best looking characters in the entire series, and I was hoping that Ranka could snap Grace out of her evil ways before she got whacked, but it was not to be. She, did die with some grace (no pun intended), when looking down the barrel of the rifle there was a look of recognition on her face; it was as if she thought: "I know I've got this coming!" Really sad but we knew it was coming. At least we got to see her birthday suit in cyberspace before she left us! Yup, payback's a b!tc#, but who says that Grace is really dead? That look she gave could have been of resignation as in "back to the drawing board" rather than "I'm so dead".
Mechinyun Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 There's a story in there somewhere about how an over the hill Fire Bomber American thought they saved the Macross 11 colony and stopped an alien invasion with the power of their song. hahah
crasis Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Oh, I'm sure you do. HAHA! I made that too easy, huh?
daeudi Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) Hey that's not a bad idea! I'll have to edit that chapter 9 though of my fanfic. Crammed too many musicians in one fleet. Imagine the comedy. Actually, that will be the new movie... Using new fold capabilities, and the unprecedented communications leap, Macross frontier is urged by Bilrer and others to seek the Megaroad. The search is joined by the 11th fleet, which Myung and Isamu moved to in order to escape the past. But a horrible fate awaits them inside FOLD SPACE ITSELF!!! Fold space overcomes time and causality, and the Megaroad was transported into the midst of the 'final battle' between the Protoculture and Supervision Army- Which is STILL happening inside a bubble of fold space! In order to end this ancient war once and for all will take thhe human heart, and song. Specifically, the song of Minmai! Myung! Basara! Mylene! Ranka! Sheryl! And at its conclusion you see the fold space bubble fall apart, setting adrift the birdman millenia in the past, while the ASS-1 falls out of it a few seconds/millenia later! Macross Forever Galaxy! ===== Sorry- Guess I shoulda put that in Future of Macross :"> ===== Ep 25 had me drooling from the mecha pr0n constasntly, and even though I understood nothing of the dialogue, I knew it was an ending I would like. Reading the gist of it here has affirmed it. Yes it was rushed, but I didn't have that same feeling of: TOO MUCH that I got from the last season finale of Doctor Who... Everything that showed up *belonged* there. While stuff was left out, it didn't have any lame injections. And personally, I loved what thhe music was doing this episode. Those 3 characters in the ending credits scenes.... kinda reminds me of Konda, et al... But I always assumed that they went with Minmei on Megaroad. Edited September 26, 2008 by daeudi
daeudi Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) Actually, I am eagerly awaiting a wall hanging with all the singers on it... I already have the one with everyone up to Frontier (inexplicably including MII) Edited September 26, 2008 by daeudi
shinkirou Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 we see the sketch of Sheryl... is that somehow alto in the middle? hehe XD lolz just trolling! XD
Valkyrie addict Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) awesome the triangle is resolved guys, it's an open relationship!! that Alto is a lucky SOB! gets to pilot sweet valks and keeps both girls! hahaha Edited September 26, 2008 by Valkyrie addict
Keith Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 OMG I just realized something...THE 11TH FLEET IS WHERE KAIFUN LIVES! WHY DIDN'T THE VAJRA KILL KAIFUN!!!
sketchley Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 For all those complaining about the pace of the last episode: Maybe Macross F was only ever designed to be one of those set-up with medium sized payoffs sprinkled throughout kinds of shows. You know, the ones where the conclusion is not really as important as the ride that the viewer is taken on up until the ending? Given the number of deculture moments and cliffhangers, I think the final episode is a perfect end to the series. Yeah, there was a lot of ground that needed to be touched on, but just think: it could be a lot worse if they spread it over more than one episode. Macross F has always been about quantity of story elements, and it's never been about flogging story elements that have overstayed their welcome.
Venom Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Generally it was good... Lots of mecha Porn : Five Stars!!! Actually i'm a big fan of the Variable Fighter technology, so it was a prefect ending. And qho said two women is too much for our Alto-Hime? HAREM-NO-JUTSU!!!! :) The only thing i'm a bit dissatisfied about that Luca still lives...i'd trade Luca for Michel...Luca was the most.. ehm..gray character compared to the others. Okay, i still understand that someone has to go with a larger fanbase but hey...!!!! Poor Klan :S I wonder that they will or will not make an OVA or sequels this year...
tankf77 Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I have a silly question, what's Macross 11 doing around the region and why were they attacked?
JustinStrife Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Oh yeah, and perma bans for all those who voted negative. You just got no taste dudes Graham It was a great episode if you were on acid. The re-mixed songs clashing against each other, the pace that was ALL over the place, the resolution of multiple sub-plots, the finishing off of 3+ villians in half the episode... This deserved everybit of my negative vote. Leaving the romance angle aside, the rest of the episode was a complete mess. Unless you were only in it for the Mecha porn and didn't care about anything else. Then this was a wet dream for you. Worst ending episode for a Macross story ever.
sketchley Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 There's nothing to indicate that the M11 fleet was anywhere near the M25 fleet nor even in the same sector of space. As they included Earth (Macross city), the impression that I have is that the Vajra were able to fold (and/or were already present) in most of the areas occupied and colonized by humans/the NUNS. Given that a human was guiding them, they could very well have folded to all publicly known and some top secret human settlements/ships/fleets. I have a silly question, what's Macross 11 doing around the region and why were they attacked?
BlueMax Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) they might or might not be aound th region. the vajra network transcends distance and thus has no lag between folds. That is why earth is also shown at the same time Edited September 26, 2008 by BlueMax

Not really, while I agree that the songs could have been mixed better and the general pacing could have been better as well, I think the (dis)honor of the worst macross ending has to be from macross zero
VF-25S Full Armour Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) Watched the raw and frankly it was exactly as I expected. Still quite a few questions unanswered, but there was no shortage of mecha action, none of which seemed out of place. Rushed as hell too. Frankly, I am slightly disappointed in the sense that it wasn't enough closure, until I figured that a Macross movie will show up in the near future anyway to answer some questions and perhaps open new mysteries too. Hope for the future, the one thing that's really important to the Macross Universe and one of the many reasons why I liked Macross since SDFM. Grace's (at least her current body's) end was really fitting. There's a price to pay for dissing the (late) ultimate womanizer of the series. You naughty bitch, adding salt to his unhealed wounds. Alto shooting her with Michael's gun was his greatest act of honor for his late friend and comrade, whose motto with both enemy targets and women was: "ONE SHOT, ONE KILL." UN Spacy Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I can't stop watching this finale folks. I don't understand why the shippers are so upset.
RedWolf Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I have a silly question, what's Macross 11 doing around the region and why were they attacked? Macross 11 is at the Rim I think. Same backwater space as Zola and Loshier's smugglers hold.
Major Focker Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 just realized: they never did show nanase wake up, or did they?
ZandrisIV Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 They did, one of the last shots as the credits are rolling...

I do wish Dick had much more screen time. That's a possibility. More or less him sorta of/sort of not teasing the old-school fans. Not to mention this is the 25th anni., so it's a nice little nod to the roots of the franchise and to the fans at the same time; a "Gone, but not forgotten" moment. As for B's motives. Anything from him being a simple fanboy, to being a survivor or Megaroad-01, to him having a hand in or know the reason for the colony's loss. Maybe the movie will clear things up a little, but I'm not hedging bets on it doing so. It's a pretty open ended couple of seconds of footage-- which I think was deliberate-- and can go anywhere they want if they want to revisit/expand on that story point in the future. As much as I'd like a "hunt for the SDF-2" type story-- not sure if I want them to actually find the SDF-2 or not, I'm curious about the Vajra/Protoculture planet that Frontier colonized. There's bound to be tons of stories to be had there.
Dervish Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 just realized: they never did show nanase wake up, or did they? She opened her un-bandaged eye.
Morpheus Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 The best scene of this episode BTW, what happened to Dulfim?
RedWolf Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 You know Machida like Alto, Luca and Klan change his machine for battle. Macross Battle Frontier MACHIDA PUNCH!
aerocombatpilot Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 All joking and trolling aside, I don't think it was possible for Kawamori to create a 30 minute ending to Macross Frontier that everybody would be happy with. There was too much that was unresolved before we got to the last episode, and there was no way he could tie up all the loose ends in just 30 short minutes; perhaps if Macross Frontier was a hour long each episode (man what a dream ) then it would have been possible. Man there was just NO WAY this last episode could live up to the hype so, I believe Kawamori did the best he could with what he had. Am I angry because the love triangle did not get resolved? Heck no, that was the least of my worries; was Ranka going to save the day was my concern! I can't fault Kawamori for the ending of Macross Frontier, he gave enough 'nods' to us old school Mac fans and he's giving us a movie; I won't complain!
Marlovian Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 While the episode was too short for all the stuff that needed to happen, I think SK and the MF staff did an excellent job with the time limit they had. I'm glad that Ranka got the chance to save the day with her song, and transform the Vajira despite the presence of the "queen." Little Queen rules!! Re: Sheryl, Ranka's cure, was moving the infection from where it was fatal to Sheryl, back down to an area where it could then be cured, correct? Sheryl doesn't have the same connection to the Vajira as Ranka does, right? Or did I miss something? I'm fine with the unresolved triangle. I think either ship can read what they want into it, and come out ahead for their couple. I hope that it gets resolved in the movie, but I won't hold my breath. One of the highlights was seeing Minmay's picture in Birler's ring. It's awesome that he wanted to go back in time to meet her! Being a Minmay fan from SDF Macross (Hikaru was an idiot), I was happy to see her legend continue with this series, and for her to live on. Bring on the movie SK, and I hope we don't have to wait another 14 years for another Macross tv series. I'm kind of sad that it's finished. It was an amazing 25 weeks!! M
Shun Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 (edited) BTW, what happened to Dulfim? Saw at least 2 Dulfim class and 1 Kaitos class when Alto and Brera were doing that low altitude trench run up to the Vajra Queen (approx 19m+). could be more out there. Alastar Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 This episode was really rushed but i refuse to give it a Neg vote. A lot of homage done to the Macross series. For one thing i was not expecting the Macross Quarter to use a Daedalus attack...real good stuff...and the Frontier following up with a mean sucker punch was really great. Fighters and the action was on point but it really was rushed....i feel this episode should have been longer. As for the original Ms. Macross locket...............a taste of things to come???? And the SDF-01 looked horrible when they flashed to Macross City. But i love this episode....Still wish Alto picked one.
