ron5864 Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 The Island.... No, not the one that Ewan MaGregor and Scarlett Johansson were trying to get to in that Michael Bay film. But this one... This is a small Macross Island diorama for the 1/20000th scale ARII SDF-1. The period is circa late 1999 after the uncontrolled descent of the Macross battle fortress plowed onto a small South Pacific island (Ataria) and wiping out 75% of the local plants and wildlife. But wait, there's more! Here is sneak peek of the next part of this project Ten years later, humans continued the habitat destruction by paving over 1/3 of the island. This is 1/5000th scale diorama is still a work in progress. More photos and details to come. Quote
Gin Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Wow, that looks really impressive. Have any other works you have planned after this one? Quote
polidread Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Hey!!! great idea, great implementation!!!! Quote
Valkyrie addict Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 simply brilliant.... is the small macross diorama finish or are you planning to add some damaged/crash detail to the ASS-1 Quote
MechTech Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Ron's THE Diorama Dude! Awesome work (and I know a lot of it too)! - MT Quote
cowie165 Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 (edited) Amazing work Ron. Man, creating those buildings required a LOT of patience. Well done. Which flock did you use for Ataria? And was it spak-filla to create the mud/earth around the crashed SDF-1? And how did you make the water? It sorta looks like paint on sandpaper - turned out very nicely! Sorry for the 20 questions mate, I just love your work and want to learn Edited September 13, 2008 by cowie165 Quote
DarkReaper Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 That looks great! I think you should go for a scorched rock and soil look for the '99 Ataria though rather than the muddy look. Quote
Fly4victory Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 That looks so perfect, thought it was CGI had to reread and look again to see that it is a model. Quote
miriya Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Brilliant! Genius!!! You are my idol! Quote
ron5864 Posted September 13, 2008 Author Posted September 13, 2008 The Island: Part 2 (Circa 2009) Alright guys/gals, Here is the completed 1/5000th Macross Island set, or rather mostly Macross City set. This took sometime to finish because all the buildings and background scenery. I tried recreating the set to match what was shown in Epsiode 1 of Macross:SDF. The 1/5000th scale SDF-1 is from Imai. Now it has a pretty decent place to be displayed in. And about the 1999 Island, the ocean water was just several shades of blue gloss spray paint. The lighter blue was painted closer to the land to mimic the shallower areas. The speckled water surface was done after applying several layers to give some wave roughness. The island itself is made out of towel paper dipped into a diluted Elmer's glue solution. It hardens just like plaster based material. Brown paint was then applied. Woodland Scenic's green grass was then applied. This set did not take much time to build since it was rather small compared to the 1/5000th version. Plus it was done while I was working on the larger one. If I can make it to next year's MacrossCon2009, I will bring these sets. Deculture! Quote
miriya Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 I almost want to cry looking at these! Makes me feel like I am 8 years old again. .. . . Quote

Bri Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 What an incredible piece of work, well done!. Out of curiosity how big is the 1/5000 setup? Can't really get a sense of the real life size of the display from the pictures. Quote
UN Spacy Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 The buildings are so well done I keep thinking it's CG. Beautiful work sir. Quote
cowie165 Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Hats off to you Ron for such an original piece made with such skill and thanks for the pointers! I love those 1/5000 cliffs! Quote
big F Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 WOW. Oddly I saw the Thunderbirds Tracy island toy set yesterday and thought why has no one ever made a Macross island set. great work Quote
TSP Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Didn't noticed this great build till now. Shame on me for not lurking properly. Fantastic work! Quote
Black Valkyrie Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Wow, excellent. Keep up the good work. Quote
Necron_99 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Great job. How big does the entire diorama measure? Quote
Knight26 Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 That is beautiful, I wonder if you could vacform a mold for it so others could try building their own based on it. Also, when you really look at it it makes you realize just how little of the city they were able to put into the Macross, probably just the housing area and a little bit of the business district. MechTech Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 The aerial view looks realistic! Hey, I can see my house from here! - MT Quote

Max Jenius Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I always wondered what the island kit looked like. AWESOME! Quote
misterryno Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Now if you were to make a 1/60 version of this island....that would SURELY sell! Quote
Hiriyu Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Really excellent work. I thought that the picture below was a screen capture from the animation, until I clicked/maximized it! Quote
ron5864 Posted September 18, 2008 Author Posted September 18, 2008 Great job. How big does the entire diorama measure? This sets were made for displaying the SDF-1. But they were also made for Macross fans. I hope to bring them to the next MacrossCon. The 1/5000th scale set measures about 20 inches deep by 30 inches wide. The cliffs are about 4 inches high. The 1/20000th scale set is about 12 inches by 15 inches. And Misterryno, if I were to build a 1/60 scale version, I better start looking for a real deserted island... I'll post more photos into the photo gallery when I get back from work travel. Quote
505thAirborne Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 The whole diorama looks great!! And your 1/5000 scale SDF-1 is one of the best built examples I have seen in a really long time!!! You did a wonderful job!! Quote
505thAirborne Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Now if you were to make a 1/60 version of this island....that would SURELY sell! Hey Misterryno, a 1/60 scale size Island!!?? That is insane.... SO insane it just might work!!! I like your thinking!! Quote
