Then do something about it! <img src="http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B))" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

Now, it should be said upfront that I actually liked the rainbow coating but the corner of the left "rear view mirror" in the cockpit rubbed the inside of the canopy and rubbed off a small spot off the rainbow coating and it made it look like a dark spot.

This bugged the piss out of me until I got brave and decided to remove the coating entirely.

Here's what you need :

1. Some Q-Tips

2. A bottle of Tamiya acrylic paint thinner

3. A big pair of brass balls.

First, remove the pilot from the canopy. Remove the fuselage and hold it upside down with the canopy open and grab a Q-Tip and dip it in the acrylic paint thinner.

Now for the important part :

BE VERY CAREFUL not to get any of this on any part of the black canopy paint. This stuff WILL remove the paint!!!!

With that in mind, rub the Q-Tip on the inside of the canopy while holding the removed fuselage upside down. You will also want to brace the canopy with one of your fingers to prevent snapping the canopy off when applying force as your rubbing the wet Q-Tip inside the canopy.

This is going to take a few minutes, so be patient. The thinner WILL wear the finish off, just keep rubbing and if necessary, re-dip the Q-Tip to keep it wet. Once you think you've removed all the rainbow coating, you can either take part of a wet washcloth and some soap and clean the thinner off the inside of the canopy or even use another Q-Tip and wet it and use soap.

If after you dry it you still see some of the coating remaining, you can repeat the process.

Now, if you should accidentally remove some of the black paint from the canopy, you can try using Tamiya Black Acrylic paint to touch it up.

Now for a couple of pics :

PICT2788.jpg

PICT2789.jpg

As you can see, it works great! On the first pic, the blue on the rear of the canopy is the screen from my computer, FYI.

So if you're not a fan of the rainbow coating on the canopies of these new 1/60 VF-1's, or you're like me and found that part of the inside of the cockpit rubbed off a small spot, you can indeed do something about it!

One last thing :

I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR VALK SHOULD YOU FRAK IT UP!!!

Kyp, Thanks for this thread. This is very helpful. I think that the rainbow canopy is a cool idea and looks cool at times but really i want to see the pilot clearly so this is great to know that it can come off.

Kyp, kudos to you for being brave enough to use your new 1/60 as a guinea pig. If I ever do decide to get the v2, I'll be sure to get a bottle of Tamiya acrylic paint thinner. From some of the pictures I've seen, it looks like the rainbow effect can sometimes distort the cockpit details, which I find counterproductive.

wow, good idea...when I get my VF-1 I'll decided if I stay with the rainbow canopy or not...thinner sometimes fogs up clear plastic, yours doesn't look like it, but since you have a good pair of brass ball, you should try dipping the canopy in future to give it extra shine

Nope, the Tamiya acrylic paint thinner doesn't fog the plastic. And while that was definitely a concern, I just couldn't stand seeing the spot where the rainbow coating was rubbed off by the side mirrors inside the canopy. After a half hour of trying to overlook it, I couldn't stand it no more.

GREAT plan Kyp!!! But I think I will leave mine. THANKS!

You know, a thought occurred to me...

Some mods can either add value or take value away, but I think my mod actually added value to it as it's THE ONLY V2 Valk with a clear canopy as opposed to the regular rainbow coating.

And I know there's quite a few that would rather have one with a clear canopy. :p

I think I'll shave off a bit of the rear view mirrors to prevent the cockpit from rubbing against them ;)

Thanks for the tip though, but I kinda like the rainbow effect!

I did too...but I didn't have a choice as I couldn't stand that spot that was rubbed off. I liked the coating myself. :(

No, it was my anal, detail oriented OCD that said I had to. :p Trust me, the clear canopy looks a lot better than having that dark spot .

I suppose if I actually wanted a rainbow effect canopy again, I could remove the fuselage and post in the wanted section for an even swap, but it's not worth it for me to do that.

Besides, it just looks like the 1/48's did now and every other Valk before this had the canopies clear so it really doesn't bother me. I just won't be doing this mod to any other 1/60 VF-1 I get...well, maybe the 1D because I'm not sure I want that effect on that Valk.

:lol::lol: I know how the ol OCD goes mate. <_< I'm getting better...slowly. The bit about posting it for a swap is not a bad idea for anyone that ever ends up in your situation or whatevs.

Hi I am getting the new tv version VF-1S anyone interested in trading me for the rainbow tint canopy?

Thanks, 1st time post

not an overly grand idea. the coating is infamous for losing it's integrity.

(ie; developing cracks and chipping away)

-this is exactly why YAMATO has discontinued the coating on their subsequent releases...

i'm about to finally come into ownership of a very reasonably priced 1st Ed. 1/60v.II 1S Focker, suffering the infamous canopy coating cracking,

and, to be honest, the coating on my 1J Hik T.V. is actually beginning to show signs of the same.

as such, i'm considering attempting complete removal of the coating, via Q-TIPs saturated in medical grade 91% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL.

this stuff is AWESOME for removing adhesive goo, cleaning the tape path of VCRs and audiocassette decks,

and WILL dissolve fully dried TAMIYA COLOR right off of ABS plastic, without visually affecting integrity of the material...

So do you think the Isopropyl Alcohol will do the trick? I recently acquired a 1/60v.II 1S Focker Weathering Edition with the canopy coating cracking, and I also have access to laboratory grade solvents.

i don't know, but i'm going to give it a shot today. i'll keep you all posted on the results.

also, i got the alcohol at my local WAL-MART...

UPDATE - it's taking multiple applications, but i think it's working...

Hmmm...perhaps Tamiya acrylic paint thinner is the better route to go. How many applications is it taking, Shaorin?

Any of you guys know if there is model paint to emulate the polarized affect or how to tint the canopy to look more realistic

Me three. I really like the look of the polarized effect and none of my Valks have the chipping/cracking happening to them. It's a bummer my later Valks don't all look the same. I thought it was a really nice touch.

as do i, but once the coating starts to fail, as so many coated copies seem to inevitably do, it seems best to find a way to strip it right off.

in regards to that, that method i had mentioned back there, up above, with the 91% Iso Alcohol? IT - REALLY- WORKS.

it takes several Q-tips, saturated in the stuff, and plenty of rubbing all around the interior surface of the canopy,

but it WORKS, PERIOD...

Did you notice if the repeated rubbing with the Q-tip scratched the inside of the canopy at all?
