There was a Code Geese version as a freeby giveaway in Newtype a couple of months ago.

We would order Pizza Hut... but damn, they are expensive.

Yeh, another popularity poll for this month. Nothing much we can take from this since this is a flavor-of-the-month poll. But I'll take comfort in the fact that Frontier is up there and ahead of Geass R2 this month.

actually in japanese anime, they don't really stick closely to the current japanese ranking names, its a much more simplified ranking system which seemed to be a common naming system for all forces be it air force/navy/army.

personally i find it so confusing to use so many different names and its even more confusing trying to see which rank is equivalent to which rank in another force.

perhaps this is also due to where i'm brought up, we have a unified rank structure for army, AF and navy (only the naming for 'General' changed to 'Admiral' for the navy) - what you guys will say is that it is somewhat similar to your army rank structure.

Luckily, this makes it easier for me to understand the anime ranking structure

and if u or the subbers insist on using US ranking system, you're only gonna confuse yourselves. ;)

Jeffrey Wilder is 大佐 - Colonel

Ozma is 少佐 Major

Klan Klan and Bobby are 大尉 To me that is Captain ranking.

Cathy is 中尉. that is (1st) Lieutenant.

Mikhail is 少尉 2nd Lieutenant.

notice the first word is repetitive (from low to high) 少 -> 中 -> 大

there is an occational 准 which is lower than the above. e.g. 准尉 - Warrant Officer, 准将 - Brigadier General

it is soooooo much easier to name ranks this way.

To say that a rank structure "that has been tried and tested", well... dont forget the other naming conventions are tried and tested too. :)

Makes sense.

Hell, depending on the country the higher the rank, the more different they get and the same goes the closer to the bottom.

The only real constants seem to be the lieutenant through major grades, then things tend to veer off from there depending on the nation of origin and in some cases depending on the branch.

The most notable changes in the universe is that from Plus onward, only officers were fighter pilots as opposed to the non-coms that originally appeared in SDFM, such as Hikaru, Kakizaki and Max. Now I am not entirely sure if that has been continued in the SMS, but in the UNS it has been the case AFAIK.

R2 is #1 and CG #3.

Anime

#2 Macross Frontier

Male

#4 Alto

Female

#3 Sheryl

#4 Ranka

Nice to see Soul Eater jump up from #20 to #4, that's going to have a good chance of going past Frontier because the first 11 episodes are average compared to later manga events.

haha, yeah i was surprised that non-commissioned ranks are pilots in SDFM, cos the AF pilots here are officers (is it similar for other real-world AF?).

As for Alto, in ep 7 he was referred to as 准尉 - Warrant Officer, which should be under non-com ranking right?

Nanase: Alto Kun...

Alto: Nanase San...

Uh, he's leaning in so she can whisper to him. They're in a theater.

It's a class between non-coms and coms.

Like an ensign in the Navy.

Probably once he proves himself he'll get a commission.

Ensign is a commissioned rank in the Navy... well it is here anyway (US), like I said it is all I know. As for the debate on what the show uses, it doesn't bother me what it is actually using for it's rank system, I was just comparing it to what I know so that bit is done.

I wasn't so surprised to see non-coms in SDFM, however I think your right, non-coms generally aren't pilots. You could argue though that the Macross has a shortage or personnel and were taking anyone they could get (and got lucky they got Max... and Kakizaki).

In some services WOs are NCOs, some they are intermediate between NCO and COs. In the US I believe Chief WOs count as commissioned since they actually do receive an official presidential officers commission.

In the Canadian Army/Air Force WOs are the senior NCOs equivalent to a US Army Master Sergeant or US Navy CPO. In the US Forces the Warrant Officer is a kind of recognized "specialist" with skills not found in enlisted personnel but without general officer and command training. Within the fictional frame of Macross I can certainly see recruit pilots being given the rank WO. I believe most US Army helicopter pilots are/were WOs.

Yeah what he said.

However the term ensign to compare the two is my mistake, as per above the equivalent would be a CWO in the US service.

I see then, simple misunderstandings, they happen all the time.

I think I saved myself trouble by not looking at that above mentioned dating sim game.

Eww, wavpack.

Enh, forget what I said. Screw that one...I'm getting the 320kbps mp3 version at dmhy.

Seems to be a little slow, though...
