I believe Max's rank at the time of Macross 7 was Colonel. Which kind of explains why in Macross 7 and Macross 7 Trash why he can't just have Barton's or Bacelon's head in a platter as they were of the same rank.

If Max real rank was "colonel", he was still not a FLAG officier and consequently giving him the command of a FLEET is illogical.

Illogical it may be, but that didn't stop the U.N. Spacy from giving Misa Hayase command of a ship and its escort fleet at the rank of Major...

I guess being a UN top ace pilot could contribute to something, not to mention he is the first human ever to wed a Meltrandi.

If Mac 7 fleet ever encountered a rogue Zentraedi fleet, Max only need to get Milia and kiss her in the front of the Zentran, and if anything else fail, he could demonstrate his skill in a valk or Battle-7.

Yeah, but both George Kirk and James Kirk were "captains" in unusual situations unlike Max. And since "captain" is a rank equal to a "colonel" of the army and the air force, no problem there.

There's a reason why I say "captain of <insert a ship or fleet here>", i.e. command of the vessel/fleet and not "Captain", i.e. the rank. They are the master of a vessel (Wikipedia). Perhaps a better translation of "Kancho" is "skipper" for those of you who can't differentiate the 2 meanings.

Got a few questions here, not really sure if they're noob questions, but didn't think it warranted a thread on it's own. Anyways, coudn't find the answers to any of these in the cCompendium, just wondering what everyone else's thoughts are on these subjects regarding the relationship between Hikaru and Roy:

- Hikaru is ethnic Japanese, Roy is probably of German decent but born in North America (Canada, US....who knows) so native English speaking.

- Did Roy spent most, or some of his life in Japan, and that's why he can speak Japanese, understands Japanese culture, the whole sempai/kohai relationship?

- Did he ever teach English in Japan, like every other foreigner in Japan?

- How's Hikaru's English? Pretty fluent, or heavily accented?

- Is the official language aboard the Macross Japanese?

I've never watched the English dubbed version (except for the older Robocrap version), does it take into account accents, or is everyone speaking English at the native level? It'd be interesting if they took those issues into consideration when dubbing, or God forbid they ever make a live action Macross.

We given that Hikaru's grandpa was a barnstormer and given Roy's relationship with Aries. Its safe to say they are American.

In DYRL Hikaru did speak English to the ARMD flight controller.

They've never said what the official language of the Macross universe is. They've used English in various places like VF-X and in Macross Frontier (ep. 1 Deculture edition). Keep in mind Shin Kudo is Japanese-American and was part of the U.S. Navy and yet they were all speaking Japanese. I'm gonna blame it on the "Universal translator"-effect. Why are Hikaru and Roy speaking in Japanese when they probably are speaking English? Universal translator-effect.

Milia's Rank in Macross Trash is listed as Colonel (See translation hosted here). If she was 2nd in command (before running for Mayor) Max out ranks her at least by one rank. I'm gonna say Max is brigadier general like Global was.

Roy could have been multiple European decent as well as Germanic. Roy, Hikaru & Hikaru's dad are all pilots. I think English is the universal air traffic control language. Roy could talk to them without having to know Japanese. If Roy was flew for Hikaru's father he would have picked up some Japanese and learned some of the customs. South Ataria Island/Macross City seem to have a heavy Japanese influence. Being stationed there Roy could have picked up some of the more common languages.

Every soldier & citizen of the UN Government learns several languages and speak can them fluently.

Yeah, but at the end of Space War One 99% of UN Spacy personals were killed. The number of commissioned officers with great experience in space combat like Misa was certainly low. That's why Global took this into consideration and made Misa a fleet commander even if she did not have the required rank at that time. Also, nothing in canon Macross indicate that Misa was still a "major" when she took command of the Megaroad fleet. I think so at least. Misa's situation was unusual because of Space war One. This is what I am trying to say here.

Thank you for the answer. ^_^ Proving that Max was indeed a FLAG officer and therefore was in the right to command a fleet. Like Azrael said "captain" is Max's position and "brigadier general" or "rear admiral" is his actual rank.

I was just watching MF episode 25 again and I was wondering. When Alto and Brera are charging towards Grace. What causes Alto's Face Plate on his helmet shatter? Was it supposed to show how fast and how strong the force was, or just anime magic to build up the moment? I mean he didn't hit anything nor did anything hit his 25.

<_< Really? I was assuming he's temporarily gone so hotblooded that the sudden change in temperature shattered the glass of his helmet.

Damn. That sh!7 is dangerous! :o

If you think that's bad... go read Macross 7 Trash, where they actually succeed in weaponizing spirita...

Wait...Wha? How did they manage to do that, and how did they implement it?

Oh nothing just a Zentradi-Varautan conspiracy extracting Aggressive Spiritia from T-Crush players and using it to heighten the emotions and power of the Mind System user.

Col. Bacelon was going to use it for a little Zentradi rebellion on Macross 7.

Just recieved a AKG k416p, not a high-end phone, but a good one... Then i went to listen to "Macross The Complete", wtf, never realised there is noise at the background. And it is a APE file, that should be lossless... Is it this way? or an evil person uploaded a mp3 converted to APE and fooled me???

You know something went terribly wrong when someone converted a mp3 into an ape an expecting it to sing without feeding it with bananas......

It could easily be that the noise is in the original masters. I don't have a copy of the CD to check, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I know a lot of early CDs that were re-releases of older albums had a note on the back informing people that CDs were so good they brought out flaws in the original recording/apologizing for background noise they could do nothing about at the time.

I have the actual physical CDs, so if you tell me what track, I can check them out for you. I've honestly never noticed, and/or it's never bothered me, though.

Noise from track 44/CD1 is very noticeable.

Yeah, you're right, there is a hissing noise. Volumes I and II of the SDF soundtrack were re-issued last year, perhaps they were remastered.

Is that true Roy Focker joined the Air Force because one of his friend got killed in the UN Wars ?

Yeah pretty much. Aries mentioned he wasn't the type to join the war. Even pacifist Hikaru was expecting him to go back barn storming after the war.

The Anti-UN wasn't above hitting civilian targets. Shin saw his folks wasted by Anti-UN soldiers.

Even the base on Mars wasn't safe from the Anti-UN when they stole a Oberth class ship.

Though I suspect there is more to the story considering Roy's connection to DD Ivanov.

That was one story I always wanted to see fleshed-out. It just seemed there was more to it than just the typical student-master merry-go-round.

The last re-done [VIP] Mac7 dubs I've been able to get were 28-32 back in January.

The last MacF BD rip appeared in February.

Anyone have any news? Is the last MacF BD actually available yet?

I'm planning on rewatching Macross Frontier (even if the characters annoy me as hell <_< ) and I want to know which are the best fansubs for it ?

I've been unable to find any that I really like (which is why I'll eventually be making my own), but THORA gets pride of place because they're using the BD rips instead of TV broadcast versions.

But in your opinion, which are CLOSE to the real deal ?

But in your opinion, which are CLOSE to the real deal ?

I haven't seen all of them, so I'm really not sure. Plus, as I'm not exactly fluent in Japanese, there's a lot that I don't catch just watching the series (watching is one thing...if I'm gonna translate, I need to study a show).

As such, most of the huge gaffes I've noticed tend to be things like song lyrics. Or else it's things that aren't mistakes, exactly, but questionable editorial choices (Shinsen had a lot of things like this). But that comes down to opinion.

I started off with Shinsen subs for viewing, and they were all right, but of course they never finished the series. Then I started watching Lunar, who were pretty good. The fact that they used Robotech terminology was kind of off-putting, but other than that, they seemed perfectly acceptable. And of course now THORA (using the AOne/Menclave subs, I believe) is doing a solid job.

But I think the real problem with MacF subs is that everyone started doing them when the show first began, and no one bothers to revise their early scripts in light of later developments. because of that, there's a lot of stuff in the early episodes that are mysterious, and only get explained in later episodes (a good example is Ranka shouting at Ozma after he got wounded in episode 3. In retrospect, it's clear she's flashing back to Brera, but the subs I've seen can't support that reading). NOW would be the perfect time for a fansub group to start on Frontier, and do an excellent version (although maybe they should wait until the movie's out).

Likewise, with no standardized subs for (for example) DYRL or Zero, a lot of the homages in the dialogue get muffled by the subs. *sigh* If only someone would go through and come up with new subs for EVERY Macross story, we might solve that problem... ;)

Thank you for taking time to answer my question. :) I'm going for THORA because I have no interest whatsover to let Lunar with their robotech terminology ruin my Macross Frontier experience (the characters are already doing a great job at it <_< ). ^_^

How about paying a professional translator to do the job for us Macross fans ?
