But I STILL love Bassara - my conversion to Macross 7 is solid! Heck - I even listen to Fire Bomber on my Soundwave MP3 Player every day ! :)

And it's not that I don't like Ranka anymore - Sheryl has just made great strides of progress :)

But anything is possible --- and you have to give a thumbs up to the writers of M:F for creating a story where the audience's preference in the love triangle changes:)

Otherwise it would be boring and there would be no dramatic tension :)

VFTF1

Good point about the love triangles...balance is key.

And hey! I'm listening to Fire Bomber RIGHT NOW! ("Hello," if you really want to know...)

Someday you'll have to tell us all the story of your conversion to M7...I know I want to hear it, at least...

Simple.

The quote you showed of me saying that Macross 7 sucked "No Thanks" and all was written by me after seeing a few YouTubes of Macross 7.

I don't even think they were from the series proper - and all it was was Bassara in his VF-19 on the right, and some Meldran in her Quid Rau on the left and rainbow colored beams shooting forth from each as they...sang at one another.

The picture quality and sound quality (as is often the case on Youtube) were low.

This was my first exposure to Macross 7 and I was shocked - shocked because it looked like they had taken the wonderful Macross saga and turned it into Pokemon...or something of the sort...

But finally - I downloaded the entire series and watched it STRAIGHT THROUGH.

Ahh...those were wonderful days... episode after episode...beer after beer... XXXL sized pepperoni pizza after pepperoni pizza...

I didn't like Planet Dance - so the beginning was a bit rough on me - but having Max and Exedol there made things bearable...

I can't remember exactly at what point I fell in love with Bassara - I hated him for most of the series - but I guess ultimately it was his wonderful persistance, Submarine Street, him singing to Sivil in the forrest -that did it.

Yeah - actually it was then that I came unglued and fell in love with Bassara...

The episode where he goes to Sivil in the forrest and sings to her - and that Protodevilin punches him, but he keeps singing...

It was such a moving song and such a moving scene - and I decided there and then that Bassara was God :)

From then on, I was avidly cheering Bassara on, opening myself more and more to his music and his way of doing things; it was refreshing and liberating.

So...the forrest scene - if I had to put my finger on it - the Forrest scene with Bassara singing to Sivil and the reporter being shocked and the protodevilin Gigil being angry...just everyone being shocked and angry and flustered about what Bassara was doing juxtaposed with the beauty of the act- trying to awaken a beautiful woman with great music - that's when I decided this is the best Macross Series! :)

That's admirable really, being able to say what you really like. I'm actually afraid that I'm siding too much with Sheryl that I'll find it hard to move to the Ranka camp when I suddenly feel like I want to. You know what I mean, it's like being in too deep in something that it's hard to get out? (At least I was able to move from having Ranka as my favorite to Sheryl very easily :p)

Do not be ashamed of being enslaved by Queen Sheryl. She is a worthy mistress so you should have pride in being her slave. She had the collar around me from the first few minutes of the Decultured Edition and I haven't felt the need for freedom since. I can't really find anything but ambivalence or slight fondness for Ranka so far. She is not disagreeable, but it's just that she still seems so immature, more so than the other characters.

I have to credit Alto for bringing me to like Sheryl.

My view of Sheryl was pretty much exactly like Alto's in the beginning - I was pissed at her for running away while people were in danger, and for basically giving off the impression of some stupid celebrity. Add to that the fact that her initial song wasn't the best in the world (IMO) and there was really nothing going for her (having a nice body/good looks meant zilcho, particularly in an anime series where just about every girl is really cute anyways).

But slowly - particularly with episode 5, as Sheryl was revealed to be attracted to Alto, her helping out Ranka - basically as she was humanized - I got to like her more and more.

In episode 8 - Sheryl did a "reverse Minmay" - Minmay went from being a really sweet beautiful girl that any guy would love to marry and settle down with into being a horrendous flirty cynical pop star. Bleh.

In episode 8 of MF - Sheryl went from being a horrendous flirty cynical pop star into...being the cool, beautiful adventurous girl who we go to school with.

Score!

Also - slave puns aside; Sheryl is completely Alto's slave :) He's just a delicate and reluctant master who doesn't realize his power :)

But that's what makes them such an adorable couple :)

What the hell happened to this thread?? i was basically just reading other threads first because i was expecting more of the same (i.e. "my vote's for sheryl!" "my vote's for ranka!"). but then all of a sudden, it has become this philosophical and existential roundtable discussion on the perfect woman! wow. what a difference a few days make. what a difference a post or two makes? it's like AS couldn't hold in all that love-triangle angst, and it spilled over here. :)

well, my eyes are tired from reading the posts, i'm dizzy from all the insights, it felt like i was reading Sophie's Choice all over again, so... hell yeah, i love this thread. good points all throughout! :)

what can i say that hasn't been said already?... basically nothing!! anything else i add would be anticlimactic. i'm just surprised -- shocked and aghast -- about what happened to VFTF1. dude, i distinctly remember you as one of the more adamant ones against sheryl during the first episodes, even though a lot of us tried to convince you otherwise. back then, you wouldn't even consider the possibility that she could develop into an acceptable character. so welcome to the Sheryl club! stay for as long as you want... or until that other you takes over again.

I don't really know why this scene annoyed some people, if anything it was Alto who was being a complete idiot more so than Sheryl running away. You do recall Cathy saying that it would cause a diplomatic incident if something happen to Sheryl? Imagine that Michael Jackson back at his the height of his King of Pop fame got knocked off in some backwater country due to lax security. Massive outrage from fans and a diplomatic incident would've happened... and in Macross idols like Sheryl are held in high regard. For the Frontier security team there was no question about what to do when danger was close by, they get her out of there and into safety ASAP whether she wants to or not. Don't forget that Sheryl initially wanted to stay on stage, after calming down and being told the situation she rightly realized she couldn't do anything and so went along with the Frontier security people who were doing their jobs.

I'm surprised a couple of heavily armed operators didn't just rush her into a Grizzly or similar armoured vehicle. Seriously, that kind of lax security is what gets VIPs killed in the field. She should go hire Frontier's favorite PMC to provide her with better security (guaranteed valkyrie escorts) and other, special benefits.

the undisclosed truth is that alto has been religiously reading sheryl's blog posts. and he specifically remembered posts like "i will sing no matter what happens" and "i will love you to death". and then to suddenly see sheryl running away without doing any of that broke the fanboy's heart. ^_^

on another matter, couldn't you have used any other example besides wacko jacko? i don't want sheryl getting anywhere near that vicinity of weirdness in the future. :p

The car she rode in is a Transformer.

I do get both Alto's and Sheryl's views of each other on that scene. Alto saw someone running away when there was something wrong going on (he didn't know what it was, but his reaction was understandable). Sheryl saw someone who doesn't know what's happening shout at her and call her things. They both reacted the way I would, if I were in their positions. But for Alto, my advice would be, know first before accusing, for Sheryl, learn a little more tact / kindness in speech. They both acted like immature kids in that situation.

Jacko likes shoutas, our Queen Sheryl however is more into ersatz-yuri.

He was doing it wrong, had he taken his helmet off, then Sheryl's security would have recognized him as Superdimensional Princess Alto and treated he..err him with more respect.

EDIT:

Speaking of which, had the Chō Jikū Hime-sama Alto been included in the polling he'd have probably gotten 170 votes by now.

I guess my reaction is highly colored by Macross 7.

In Macross 7, Bassara WASN'T held in high regard - sure, initially the military invested time and effort in him and into Chiba's Sound Energy theory, but as it became aparent that Bassara had his own agenda, and that his one true Tosugheki Love heart beat to its' own tune and wasn't about to be ordered around - I think the military stopped caring as much about what could happen to him.

Sheryl, on the other hand, was treated like, and acted like, a typical celebrity - aka - sure, a VIP - but not REALLY all that concerned or passionate or even CONSCIOUS of what was going on around her.

I guess I "expected" too much from her - due to Bassara being so heroic and wonderful - I just figured the next Macross Idol would be as well..

But she acted a bit more like Myung would have; or that entire entourage: the cynicism and fakeness rather than the heart and soul :)

But I got over it since she digs an up in the air wierdo like Alto, cows, and runs round without her panties - all traits I desire in a woman.

You desire a woman into cows and Alto, oh, and not to mention cows?

Yes :) I have plenty of cows around here because I spend half my life on a farm :) So women who like big animals that say Moooo!! are a must :)

but i have to admit.... the scene was way out of there in the de-culture edition, simply because there was no prior interaction between sheryl and alto. it was really off. could you really blame sheryl for ignoring the ramblings of this crazy kid she's never even met before?

it was only in the broadcast edition that it felt acceptable for that exchange to take place. Alto: "i saved your life, so you listen to what i have to say!" Sheryl: "well, i wouldn't have been in danger in the first place if it weren't for your corkscrew, so bug off." See? didn't that sound more reasonable? :p

Yes, but I wrote interested in someone "as wierd as' Alto :)

The idea being that since I could be considered wierd, then a girl who is interesting in "wierd people" "like Alto" would concievably be interested in me :)

Speaking of which - I showed my girlfriend one episode of SDF Macross TV - Pineapple Salade; and while she enjoyed it very much, he main comment was "wow! They have super hair!" (this about Roy and Hikaru)....

This was interesting :)

Well - my girlfriend will never watch the entire series. She does buy me toys though; but that's cause she loves me - not cause she understands me :)

So when I had the chance to show her something from Macross, I showed her two things:

a) a still screen cap from SDF TV when Hikaru and Misa embrace in the cockpit of Hikaru's Valkyrie upon seeing the Macross touching down on earth after the battle with Boldoza.

I showed this to her because it just so happens that (honest to God), my girlfriend looks a lot like Misa Hayes (not a coincidential pick on my part!) and although I'm a bit chubbier, taller and certainly older, I guess I could pass for a Hikaru impersonator - especially if you drank some beer....ok lots of beer...

Anyways - she agreed that Hikaru and Misa looked a lot like us - so I was pleased.

b) Pine Apple salad - I specifically showed this "traumatic" episode to her because she isn't at all an anime fan, and actually never in her life watched cartoons - except very basic Communist era-cartoons which, despite their sometimes being charming, were no where as sophisticated as the Japanese anime... so I showed her Pine Apple Salad as a window into a world she COMPLETELY doesn't know AT ALL - and I figured that given the serious tone of the episode, the fact that a hero dies, and the emotions shown in the episode, it would be a better start than something where there's lots of shooting - although...I guess Pineapple Salad had lots of action anyways...

c) I have also been successful in getting her to listen to Bassara and Minmey sing. MP3 Soundwave is good for that - we were sitting around with her daughter trying to piece togetehr a puzzle of cats and dogs (we failed!)...and I transformed MP3 Soundwave into robot mode to sit next to her - so she decided to have a listen, and was particularly moved by Minmey. She said Minmey's music was "hypnotic" - in the positive sense... as for Fire Bomber - she enjoyed everything except Totsugeki Love Heart; which she claims sounds "violent" (which it totally isn't - but if you realize that she's into soft rock and Jazz then you could kind of see how Totsugeki Love Heart's fast pace would sound "violent")...

So that's the high and low of it :)

One day - I will of course maneuver her into watching all of M7 and eating only Pizza and drinking lots of beer with me for a week straight :) Well..maybe for an hour straight... she has this "I'm a woman and have to look good and act feminine" thing...not that I'm complaining about that - but she's just not a "chum around with" girl - more a woman with a soft spot for crazy people like me :)

now that you've explained it, pineapple salad does seem like a good choice for a non-anime fan. good call. :)

hahaha. showing your girl all of macross7 when it took you so much effort to get her to watch one SDF macross episode and listen to a few songs? good luck with that! :)

No, it's simply a problem of misunderstanding, a showcase of the imperfections of vebal communication.

Alto:"Not all people have been evacuated (pointing to himself). People have been here for you [read: I have worked for you]. You should still have something to do before you leave [read: give me a ride to shelter]." Sheryl:"(not looking at Alto the whole time and thinking he is a selfless but stupid boy) it's only for professionals." Alto: "That is where your professionalism goes(stunned, thinking Sheryl means a professional singer having privilege over a school boy not it's a job for professional soldiers to handle enemy.)."

This is the real story.

If your scenrio is true, I bet there is another scenario would happen about one year later.

In the house of Nomes, Sheryl asks Alto Nome in chains(he adopts Sheryl's family name):"remember when we first met?" Alto:"Yeah, we flied together." Sheryl:"no, you knocked me out of stage, and threw some dirty nonsense towards me." Alto:(trying to escape but inable because of chains). Sheryl:(pick up a whip and the regular daily game of Nomes begins).

Nanase. Nanase. Nanase. I will always find a girl of her proportions who wears corrective lenses attractive.

Have you cast your vote? If you haven't, do it. Nanase's number haven't increased for a while. Since Ranka and Nanase are unlikely to catch up Klan-chan in 2nd place and dethorning Sheryl from the #1 is simply impossible, I'm more interested in who will end in the 3rd. Nanase definitely need more support to be more competitive.

Yup, I cast my vote for her the minute I found this thread. Hopefully she'll get more screen time and character development but...as things look right now, I think she'll remain strictly a background character. Eye candy, if you will, like the bridge bunnies. God, I hope not.
