Lion lands #3 in the weekly rankings?!?!?! Okay I'm just a bit disappointed since I was hoping it would make it to #2, but still... CONGRATULATIONS TO THE STAFF!!!

This is good news, can't wait for Oricon to update their website :)

Official figures for this week's sales:

1- 467,288 Arashi 『truth/風の向こうへ』

2- 57,667 Pornograffitti

3- 56,455 May'n/Megumi Nakajima

The #1 position is definitely secured by Arashi, but that margin between 2 and 3... Oh well no use dwelling on it! Here's to the 4th Macross F CD to get to the top 3! Fifth Macross CD to get inside the top 5!

Bear in mind that "Lion" is an anime-related soundtrack and it's doing fairly well compared to the normal music sales.

I know! AFAIK, this is unprecedented...

It's amazing how well the MF singles/album are doing. May'n, Megumi Nakajima and Kanno have really made some amazing songs.

How is this succes on the charts affecting Macross frontier? I have no idea if Macross frontier is able to reach the Japanese mainstream audience.

many thanks!

"Won’t someone please softly stroke the outline of the void?

The words of love that couldn’t be saved

Were erased by the waves of time

So I want the answer once more

Crucified by fate, the Northern Star is burning

I scratched you out and made you a cloudy blur

But still, I once loved how you laughed sweetly"

wow. just wow.

It's already gone down to number 14. Its high rank is really mind-boggling for me, because as usual, there is virtually no radio airtime, no TV appearances, no commercials outside of its own time slot, no poster ad campaigns outside of designated otaku hunts, so it's almost as if Lion's huge achievement is, to use an oxymoron, blatantly invisible.

I mean, people on MW are asking whether May'n or Nakajima or MacF itself are becoming mainstream due to this, but I see no proof of this anywhere. Like I said from day one, I have no idea how they are selling so much, because there is no recognition for the characters or the show or the singers in your average household here.

And I really dislike that the Mainichi article is hailing this as an "anime song boom". These CDs are selling not because there is a sudden new interest or demand for anime songs, but simply because they are damn good.

So for that much alone, I say well done to Yoko Kanno and everyone involved for a great -- and rare -- achievement. Good music in the top five, who'd have thunk it!! :p

Having said that, there is definitely more to this than meets the eye, and if researched properly, this is more proof to my theory of segregation within media audiences in Japan, and the totally different makeup of what we in the West would call "mainstream".

When I first arrived in Tokyo before, one of my Japanese friends was emphatic in saying, "Don't believe the Japanese media! They get EVERYTHING wrong!"

Probably an overstatement...but I did see some truth in it.

It's also stupid to say something is an anime song boom when all these hit singles are coming from just one show. Now if Sekirei had placed #5 and other anime original theme songs had done the same than maybe you have a case. One show... no you don't.

But that's journalism for you!

Agreed. I also like Dynamite Explosion better without the Humming Bird extended intro, but the one thing that I never liked about Fire Bomber was the glossy production. Fukuyama Fire sounds much less "produced" (and Fukuyama himself sounds like he's about to tear your throat out with his teeth), which I think makes it heaps better as a rock album.

But then, most of my favorite albums sound like they were recorded in two days in an abandoned warehouse somewhere...

And my sentiments exactly with regards to this, too. ^_^

I have mixed feelings about Ranka and Sheryl's songs. But my favorites are What 'bout my star @Farmo, Welcome to my Fanclub's Night, Northern Cross, Diamond Crevass, Aimo and Seikan Hikou.

I like most of Sheryl's songs because they're well composed and May'n does a great job vocalizing the cords. She has a bit of a pop music voice, but that's part of her appeal. I love her emotional tones so I generally prefer her soulful songs :p

What 'bout My Star @ Farmo definitely takes the cake for me, when the two girls sing together, it just sounds magical. The simple but slowly maturing tone in Ranka's voice and the professionalism in Sheryl's voice, you have a bit of both worlds and it's just perfect.

I'm still waiting for the full version of Sheryl's Aimo ;)

Can't wait to grab all the CD's once they're out.

Diamond Crevasse is still my fave. 2nd is the Ai Obete imasuka remix.

Try listening to Bobby's version. It tends to produce interesting results.

This is to quote someone from YKDB, talking about Anata no Oto:

Lol... my boyfriend just told me, that they use "Dokun" in a sexual context in Japan XD.. So he was kinda surprised about the song.. like," what did she just sing?? o.O"

Then someone asked what "Dokun" was in that *context*...

Ahm... well it means "pumping"... like pumping up... I first thought it means the blood is pumping through the heart... but it usually means the blood pumping through somewhere else.. more down the male body :p

Got the idea? or should I really say it? xD

Funniest set of lines I've read in that forum ever  Go RANKA!

*sings*

Your sound is dokun dokun dokun...

Bobby should sing this stuff.

OK, I also found this one as well. Bobby singing My Boyfriend is a Pilot, and it's the extended version with the second verse to boot. Be warned it is horrible in both the audio quality and content.

By the way, the SDF:M song that I mentioned before that's heavy on the sax is titled Sayonara from disc 1 of The Complete Macross. Nice song and I like it, but it sounds like something my father would listen to. :p

See, that's the problem...these three Bobby songs (I can't find the Ranka/Bobby "SMS Theme" duet on youtube, but I'm sure it's there) and the Sheryl version of "Space Brothership" or "Brother Spaceship" or whatever the kids are calling it these days, have been floating around for a while now, but all of of them except the Sheryl song are horrible sound quality.

I'm not even sure how they were released, originally...it was a cell-phone-download-only release, right...?

And why has nobody put them on the internet in good quality?

I'm hoping that the first edition of "Nyan Tora" will have them as a bonus disc (like the Cowboy Bebop movie soundtrack with the "Cowgirl Ed" single), but somehow...I doubt that'll be happening.

Yeah, I remember one guy putting out some of Ranka's songs in good stereo quality on YouTube. Before I got the entire albums, I ripped the audio from it to listen to it on my iPod. My usual source for the soundtracks has everything but these Bobby versions. I wasn't aware of the cell phone download only songs. So, I guess that these are not out on CD yet.

I suppose no one with good computer audio skills have been compelled to put it out there yet. I imagine the YouTube ones I posted were probably recorded via microphone while the cell phone was playing the song. Very old school and rudimentary. It always irks me to see someone post something on YouTube where they took a video camera and shot the TV screen.

anybody know what the name of the new track that debuted in ep 22 was... not northern cross but the song sheryl was singing right before klan spilled the secret to alto?

To make up for the horrible Bobby links, here is a fresh and funky version of Lynn Minmay singing a remix of My Boyfriend is a Pilot. Step aside Ranka and let the master show you how to put a new spin on My Boyfriend is a Pilot. Actually, I'm not sure if they sampled Mari Iijima's voice or if they had someone else sing it, but it's cool nonetheless.

Prepare to get up and dance. Enjoy! :D

Edit: I think this is my favorite version so far.

No, the Bobby songs aren't on CD, and I think are unlikely to be. The strange thing is that the youtube versions, the NicoNico video versions, the Nicosound versions...it's all the same version! Only ONE PERSON IN THE ENTIRE WORLD has felt compelled to download these songs and put them on the internet! In this day and age, I find that astonishing.
