Renato Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Mods, please move or merge this thread as you see fit. I can understand if there are too many Frontier threads at the moment, but I have a ton of stuff to upload so I need to keep these in the same place for the time being as I cannot put them all up in one night. I thought about putting this in the Frontier News thread but if I post them sparsely they'd just get buried. Anyway, as I mentioned in the Arihiro Hase thread, earlier this week I was browsing in the library and I came across a few interesting materials. This one here is the latest (April 2008) issue of Animation Note magazine, it's a (mostly) no-nonsense quarterly mag dedicated to the animation industry for pros and amateurs. This season's special feature is on mecha design with a whopping 20-odd pages on MacF alone. There's some never-before-seen stuff in here so I hope you enjoy it. And yeah I rushed the scans so some are wonky or upside-down. I don't really have the time, so if you could fix them yourselves... Here goes: Quote
Renato Posted May 18, 2008 Author Posted May 18, 2008 Next batch... Just occurred to me: I'm gonna look real stoopid if someone's already done all this, since I haven't checked the boards for a couple days... Quote
Renato Posted May 18, 2008 Author Posted May 18, 2008 Last one for tonight but more to come. Sees yas! Quote
MilSpex Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Last one for tonight but more to come. Sees yas! You don`t study much do you? Nice scans! Quote
eugimon Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 awesome. The vajra version of the regult is pretty darn interesting as well as that zentradi with the gu-11 gunpod. Quote
Duke Togo Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Until we get a translation, I think these do nothing but add more questions. Quote
OmegaD3k Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Vajra Regult?! O_O DO WANT! Bandai, please make models of these, k, thanks. Looks like the Vajra are controlled by pilots afterall.. The uniform looks very similar to the "shape" of the energy spike within one of them in Episode 5, where Ranka was singing "'Bout My Star"(?). Quote

The uniform looks very similar to the "shape" of the energy spike within one of them in Episode 5, where Ranka was singing "'Bout My Star"(?). Well, we don't know. A bunch of these could have been pre-production concept designs. That's why we need a translation. Quote
Final Vegeta Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Even despite some of these may be preproduction sketches, I am glad to know there are further Vajra types. After episode 7 Vajras look less menacing that they were at the beginning. FV Quote
azrael Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Well, we don't know. A bunch of these could have been pre-production concept designs. That's why we need a translation. I think you guys are reading it upside down (as Renato said). The only things I see are the paper-to-CG VF-25, the Vajra red lobster and scenery.... Quote
Project Phoenix Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Most of these are pre-production design sketches that later evolved into the current designs we saw on Frontier. That humanoid with the gunpod is the early design for the Ex=Gear. What's interesting is that the Zentradi Regults were supposed to be organic originally with bug like wings! Quote
Morpheus Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 (edited) Yes, lineart :D Any lineart of the capital ships? Edited May 18, 2008 by Morpheus Quote
Realist_Classic Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Thanks for scanning and sharing the artwork. Really funky and bizarre-looking designs. If anything, I now have greater appreciation for the sheer amount of creative energy and work behind MF's production. Quote
raymond Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Last one for tonight but more to come. Sees yas! Look at the logo designs at the lower left corner. Are any of these on that mystery VF27? Quote

junior Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Look at the logo designs at the lower left corner. Are any of these on that mystery VF27? I think they all say either 'Frontier' or 'Galaxy'. So most likely these are sample logos intended for the two colony fleets. Though it's a bit hard to read the word on the lower-left logo on the first sheet of paper. Quote

UN Spacy Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 I took the liberty to straighten, crop, and zip Renato's images. Thanks again buddy! http://www.mediafire.com/?tensgzhl1yi Quote
Renato Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 Mornin' all. BTW Thanks for the clean-ups, UN Spacy. Quote
Renato Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 One last batch. Oh, yeah, those Vajra Regults were just pre-production sketches. There's a little hand-written memo written on them saying, "Nah, not very likely..." Quote
Mr March Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Mornin' all. BTW Thanks for the clean-ups, UN Spacy. Dat's right bitches! Revoltechs Rock! Read 'em and weep naysayers! MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Quote

MisaForever Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Thanks for these Renato! However, you do realize you're scanning some of these upside down right? Quote
Graham Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Don't you know about Renato? He walks around on his hands n' head 24/7! So for him, these are the right way up. Graham Quote
mike_s_6 Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 Sheryl looks really cute in those outfits... but where did her boobs go? One of those texts beside her costumes also says Audition ?! Quote

Err... the Vajra Regult actually seems like some Vajra unit that is deployed from a hive like structure... it seems to fly by deploying some sort of wings (like the red large Vajra type unit) and then folds those wings while in the "Regult" mode... If this is ever used in the show... it will mean one thing... Protoculture! Edited May 19, 2008 by Kronnang Dunn Quote
darkrealmbahamut Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 The Kabuto Vajra is intimidating looks like it could rival the Monster on dealing out the damage. Quote
