I thought of it earlier today (independently), and when I finally got some internet time I find several of you have already beaten me to the punch :) This one gets my vote!

VF-25 Katana

It heavily follows the style of the VF-19 Excalibur, which is also named after a weapon, but it looks to be sleeker and more elegant - contrast the Japanese katana with the European longsword and you can see what I mean.

And, I dunno... it just seems to fit.

All these suggestions are all well and good, but can any of our Japan based members actually help us post our suggestions? SaveRobotech? Renato? Sketchley?

Now we probably can't post every suggestion, so we should narrow it down some what.

Out of all the suggestions, the ones I like the most are Seraphim (or Seraph) and Katana.

I like Seraph, and it's got to be Seraph, not Seraphim. I can't think of any plane that has a "plural" name.

(Of course, a Seraph is supposed to have 6 wings, but I doubt any valk will conform to any of the known angel-wing configurations, besides the low-ranking 2-winged ones)

I liked the names of the famous Japanese swords better. Katana is cool, but so generic almost.

I'll go with my previously suggested VF-25 Scimitar, it sounds good and can be easily written in katakana: tsu-mi-ta-ru or tsu-i-mi-ta-ru

I was thinking of actually doing that sometime this week for gits and shiggles.

Well, just thinking out of historical aircraft... I think the only ones not named for existing aircraft are the Excalibur (unless I've missed some aircraft named that somewhere) and the Nightmare (not counting any non-canon planes).

Dunno if it's been said before (haven't had time to read all this yet), but we've had Lightning, Thunderbolt, and Sturmvogel all from WWII, aside from the original XB-70 Valkyrie.

If I were going to pick a name from WWII era, I'd say go with Corsair. The origin of the word lends itself nicely to SMS being an independent military contractor I think, since it comes from an old French word for pirate, or more specifically, a privateer from the Barbary Coast.

Seraph works well too, but while it fits the plane fine, I don't personally think it goes as well with the mercenary aspects implied so far. If the design is used by the entire fleet, that's not really an issue though.

Given the subject of past aircraft names, I'm rather suprised these didn't turn up:

VF-25 Starfighter II

VF-25 Starfire II

VF-25 Shooting Star II

Perhaps a little too obvious to think of..

They're also very '50s B-movie-ish, but I like them. ;)

Probably because I have a soft spot for Kelly Johnson's designs, and the F-104 in particular.

Even if it's for Gits and Shiggles, keep us posted whenever you do.

Have they officially named Ozma's boys as Skull Squadron? Is it too late to change it to Cordite Squadron? 'Cuz then I'd be on board with the Starfighter...

Perhaps there's room for a secondary VF-25 CF squad..

F-104. Great idea. Not so great in practice..

Still one of the better looking planes out of that decade IMO. ;)

There's still a few sword or knife names you could use..

X-3 Stiletto

F-86 Sabre

F-102 (Delta) Dagger

I've always wanted someone to actually use Rapier.. there was an F-108 Rapier, but it was a prototype escort fighter for the original XB-70 Valkyrie, and got canned shortly after the mockup stage. Seeing the relationship to the original, I'm surprised we haven't seen it used already (except in the Wing Commander games).

Could always go for oversized stuff, and call it the Claymore, but meh.. would fit a bomber better I think.

seraph is the best, it means fire in hebrew, they are the angels of fire!!!!!!!!1

If we're going with a sword theme I'd go with VF-25 Nodachi based on the overarmed FAST packs.

It would be cool if they would call an unarmoured VF-25 a Kodachi, then a one with light FAST Packs Katana, then one with Full Armour a Nodachi, the biggest mother of them all.

Other than the Zanbatou of course.

Naginata is cool too.

My vote is for VF-25 Norris.

It'll probably be a refrence to SDF Macross whatever it is, seeing as how the -25 is obviously a reference to the 25th aniversary and whatnot. So Valkyrie II is a good bet, even despite the MII stuff.

So far Valks have no naming convention to speak of, so it could be anything.

How about Pepsi presents VF-25 Diet Pepsi? That has a ring to it.

So does that imply that Ozma will roundhouse kick the Vajra in episode 2?

In seriousness to the thread, I too like the idea of the Corsair. I was gonna suggest it myself, but was beaten to the punch. Ah, they'll just call it the Valkyrie anyway...

VF-25 Hunter

VF-25 Seeker

VF-25 Skywarp (only if it is attached to a fold booster :D)

VF-25 Dragonfly

VF-25 Spidermonkey (these are agile animals you know)

VF-25 Frankenstein (the designers stole the feet off eureka 7's mech)

vf-25-battroid.jpg

eureka7_2_640.jpg

VF-25 Terminator

VF-25 Taipan (a poisonous snake)

VF-25 Aether

VF-25 Wraith

VF-25 Ouroborus (snake eating itself - the repeating of events which would symbolise macF as a "reboot" of SDF:M with no beginning or end)

I sure hope so. That would be awe inspiring.

So then you're vote is for Corsair III?

F4U Corsair

A-7 Corsair II

VF-25 Corsair III

If it's a real aircraft name, then I think Crusader would be cool. Crusader II.

I think Nirvash was also designed by Kawamori.

VF-25 Morpheus

VF-25 Trinity

VF-25 Neo

VF-25 Smith

I remember someone misread an annoucement of a Valkyrie into Broccoli, so I add them here

VF-25 Broccoli
