Lindem Herz
Let me ask a RIDICULOUS question. Why are we so adamant about getting a subbed version of this??? Most of us agree that it is highly inferior to the Deculture edition AND 90% of this is ALREADY SUBBED!!!!! GOOD LORD!!!! 'Cause even a little character development is important? Gubaba
Maybe, just maybe...ten fansubbing groups were planning on doing MF...but before they started, they decided to check Macrossworld, and saw so many people attacking the broadcast version, and then said, "Wow, if even Macross FANS dislike it so much, let's just forget about it." Hey, it's possible... *runs away to avoid incoming Itano Circus*
cyde01
really guys there's not that much that's different in this episode. i posted this in the episode 1-2 talkback thread yesterday: dressing room scene: mikhail: Miss Sheryl? girl: Eh? I'm not her! mikhail: I beg your pardon. It's just that you looked so beautiful from behind (doesn't have the negative connotations in Japanese). girl: (giggles) Oh my! luca: Can you believe Mikhail senpai, (hitting on girls) at a place like this? He has nerves of steel! You don't seem nervous at all either, Alto senpai. I guess if you come from that kind of background, you're gonna be used to this kind of atmosphere. alto: Luca! One more word and I'll.. background: hello!! luca: it's sheryl!! it's the fairy of the galaxy!!! sheryl: what are those kids!! i told you i don't want any fans backstage!! cathy: they are students who will be doing the aerial acrobatics in the opening. sheryl: students!? you put amateurs on my concert staff!? cathy: they are from our fleet's elite.. sheryl: tell them to take it easy and not disrupt my concert!! although i'll doubt the fans will be looking at anything besides me. (closes door) cathy: "fairy of the galaxy?" she's more like a little demon. aerial acrobatics scene mikhail: upward air balloon!! (dunno if i got that right) you're gonna be late units!!! alto: just keep going. mikhail: alto!! cut it out!! alto: the crowd likes it. next up, the rainbow corkscrew. CHECK IT!!!! mikhail: alto!!!! alto: GOOOO!!!!! don't get scared miss fairy. cathy: idiot!!! alto: dammit!!! (catches sheryl) i'm sorry. i'll get you right back.. sheryl: just keep flying!!! alto: what? sheryl: hurry!! alto: alright! mikhail: that idiot! all units follow unit 2!! alto: you're.. amazing.. I don't think there was anything else new. all the old scenes had the same dialogue as the deculture edition. remind me if i missed anything else new. veffidas
Which is why I question the reasons behind the fansubs delay. I'll reiterate my comments made in the episode thread: http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?s=&a...st&p=578360. There's a lot of work besides translation that goes into making a fansub. Just because the dialogue is the same for the most part doesn't mean it won't take just as long to release. Read the other posts in the thread there as well; nemesis_trooper tried his/her hand at it and came back with a sobering perspective. There's also the fact that the ED cannot be properly translated due to Kanno's trademark non-language. This can cause some groups to want to stall until there is an official transcript available. For the most part, releasing a version 2 months later isn't something fansub groups desire nor is releasing an incomplete translated episode neither. Gubaba
It looks like the Deculture version came in sixth (three points shy of the top five), the MBS broadcast was 2nd, and the TBS broadcast was 3rd. Ya gotta wonder, though...what kind of competition does it have for the Thursday night Two A.M. slot...? At any rate...now we KNOW the ratings were good! I'm not sure, but I don't think it's that unusual...... I've seen a lot of well-regarded anime that airs incredibly late like that; I don't think it's necessarily the equivalent of what airs in the US at 2 AM, for example. To be fair, I noticed while I was there that most anime was on well after midnight. I even managed to catch reruns of SDFM at 3 AM Thursday mornings...complete with commercials for the Wave Macross model.
azrael
The blog says, back in December, the special got 6th place and it made them worry a bit. But this time around, they got 2nd place, with the TBS airing the following day in 3rd place. So they reached the Top 5 on their first week almost everyday. But they want the #1 spot in the ranking by the time they're done so.... Anime has to air during odd hours because, well, unless you're Crayon Shin-chan or Sazae-san, then you don't have many time slots except mid-mornings on Sunday after the Super Hero Hour, or late night. There is no other real time slot around (with Code Geass R2, I'll take exception). As for MF's competition, well... xxxHOLiC Kei @ Thursdays, 25:25 To LOVE-Ru @ Thursdays, 25:25 Junjou Romantica @ Thursdays, 25:20 This doesn't include shows still running at the moment. Holocause
Let me ask a RIDICULOUS question. Why are we so adamant about getting a subbed version of this??? Most of us agree that it is highly inferior to the Deculture edition AND 90% of this is ALREADY SUBBED!!!!! GOOD LORD!!!! For collection's sake too. Like many other anime series that I seriously follow, I collect the episodes (None of the Macross shows are ever leaving my HDD). And while there is the DC edition, when the series finally ends and I've got all 50 (hopefully) episodes, I'd like to have episode 1 among them. What I'm wondering now is how many fansub groups will be working on MacrossF? Anime-in-Action already has ep 1 on the books but I don't know if they will be the definitive fansub version. I'm kinda hoping Shinsen comes out with one too as I like what they've done with Gundam 00 and the DeCulture edition. I also hope whichever fansub group I choose, they work at it til the end. I've encountered some fansubbers work on a series only to stop tranlating mid-season.
Gubaba
...I guess I'm alone in really liking the broadcast version. I don't prefer it to the Deculture version, but it kind of reminded me of M+...some things are better handled in the OVA (the opening), some things are better in the movie (the ending). The Deculture version had better mecha porn, the broadcast version had better, um...character development porn.

Like I said, it's the nature of editing, which can gain and lose in equal measure. Don't let the typical polarized reaction on MW exaggerate the issue. There is much to enjoy about the broadcast version and the Deculture Edition has some superior sequences as well. Personally, I would really enjoy a 40-45 minute cut with everything included. Macross Frontier almost demands a long cut and it would work well without sacrificing pacing. Edited April 8, 2008 by Mr March

I agree, I think both cuts succeded in what they were meant to do, I can understand the beef people have with the editing on the broadcast version, I also feel some cuts feel too rough, but I also think that this issue has been blown out of proportion. Actually, if you add the time the new scenes took, then that will give you an idea of how long a "complete version" would be. Personally, I find it interesting that Western fans prefer the Deculture Edition over the Japanese fan preference of the MBS version. There is still a culture gulf between both fanbases or the "buzz" affect worked as well as expected, by broadcasting the DC edition early. The DC and MBS versions are essentially the same episode with different focuses. Combined they give us a full introduction to the three main characters and their demeanors. Zinjo
I haven't read this anywhere? New to the forums? Coming in 2nd in the time slot ratings is a fairly positive afirmation of the episode. However, I do concede (as stated in the context of the statement out of which you quoted "a" sentence) that the 2nd place ranking could just as easily be due to fan "buzz" as a result of the DE version shown back in December... Then there is the reality that Macross Plus was far better received here than in Japan, compared to Macross 7.
