So the Shinsen Subs version refers to the 2 different types of augmentation pack for the VF-25 as "Super Pack" and "Armored Pack". It will be interesting to see how the AiA translation calls them, once I've finished downloading it.

(Edit in) Actually, listening to what is being said, rather than reading the subs, you can hear the SMS commander(?) clearly say "Super Pack" & "Armored Pack" in English, so I guess that makes the names official.

Personally, I love the look of the Armored VF-25 fighter mode more than the Super Pack VF-25. I really love the Stampeed Valk vibe.

I'm very curious about what is being said in this screen capture.: -

"A message from both of the Macross Frontier Governments".

I wonder are they referring to both New UN Spacy (NUNS) and the civilian city government, or perhaps there is a different government structure in place?

Graham

My guess is a this just interpretation from the subbers, albeit an understandable one since when subbing anime you don't have the kanji to help you understand the context.

The subbers choose to interpret the sentence, with the kanji 両 (both):

マクロスフロンティア両政府よりお知らせします。

Which would indeed translate a "A message from both of the Macross Frontier Governments".

I would take that with a grain of salt of interpret the sentence with the kanji 領 (territory, juridiction)

マクロスフロンティア領政府よりお知らせします。

And then the sentence would translate litterally by "A message from the Macross Frontier Juridiction Government".

Of course, the subbers' interpretation is not wrong from the point of view of pure translation. But you have to be aware that this "Both governements" thing is a just their guess, a possibility among others. We would need a written Japanese script or some more background info to sort this out.

Finally was able to watch it for the first time today... fricking amazing. So many of the scenes were homages, even the choreography.

The enemy approach to the fleet was basically the same footage as the SV-51 attack on the UNS Fleet from Macross Zero, but in space.

Here are some substantive musings of mine.

Are the "space monsters" part of the Protoculture? I'd say so. The markings and its similarity to AFOS is one. But also notice where they approach the Space monster's base, its the same pyramid shape as the archive that Exedol enters on planet Rax during Macross 7 and meets the protoculture avatar. One other thing is that the SM mecha faintly resembles the gjagravan-va enemy attacker from VFX-2

(props to Chris from MAHQ)

gjagravan-va.jpg

maybe the information is still classified, but a select group could be in a "need to know" situation, or possibly they could have high enough security clearances to see this. we don't really know what all permissions the mayors get, and this SMS, maybe it is Special Military Squad/Service and they are a higher security. we really don't have anywhere near enough information for anyone to have a firm stance on this yet.

I think you're right. Exedol in M-7 seems to be the person who had this information and in Macross F, its the Mayor.

It would be funny if to reduce the costs in putting it into mass production, the transformation ability of the VF-17 was removed, and thus rechristened the VF-171. :p

I'm pretty sure the VF-171 transforms. Watch how they fall apart when hit: they disintegrate according to the transforming parts and the seam lines are clearly where they should be on the VF-17. The VF-17 was supposed to be a space superiority fighter first and foremost, which is precisely the territory that Macross Frontier. If they are green pilots its likely that they are too inexperience to use the transformation sequence to its fullest benefit.

A little aside: While it was said the VF- 19 was supposed to be a replacement for the VF-11, it seemed ill suited for that role. Remember during Macross+ Milliard said that the 19 was supposed to be able to conduct precise raids in renegade territory: that seems to me to be more a special forces fighter's job, not your run of the mill cannon-fodder valk. While the YF-21 seemed to be wildly too expensive (morphing wings), I think the VF-19 probably was still too expensive for most colonies to construct except for leading squadrons like Diamond and Emerald in Macross 7. If there is one point I can't fault Kawamori, its that he's always made the macross universe believable in terms of the technology progression. While UNS can design all the next generation superfighters it wants (roughly one every decade) many colonies still use cheaper, simpler designs, like the VF-5000 in Zola, and the VF-17 in Macross Frontier. This also explains why we still see stryker type wheeled armored vehicles vs destroids: they are cheaper and do the job just as effectively as destroids.

This thinking also might give an explanation why a private military company operates a bleeding edge fighter. Given the extreme costs of such vehicles it might make sense for some colonization fleets to contract out high end missions to private groups. These groups could move around to fleets that are more likely to call upon its services; ie where combat is more likely to occur. Maintaining high end squadrons (like Diamond squadron) costs alot of money, especially if you're going to reenter space where a fleet might not see combat.

Looks like the launch arms haven't changed a bit in all those years, whatever timeline you're in. ^_^

vlcsnap65040ip6.th.jpg vlcsnap65236er6.th.jpg

As for the Launching arm of the VF-171s, its launched off of the ARDM follow-on class, so its technology is circa 2010, which should not be surprising.

These are details that that we merely ignore while watching most anime, but his various designs are immersive and quite revealing of the humanity which he gives to the futurism in his stories.

looking at the environmental, architectural, and mecha designs in each of the series which he has handled (like Escaflowne and Arjuna) shows that he has a redesigned vision and version of the world

Kawamori actually has some sort of continuity in there: human civilization' s expansion towards the stars and the expansion of technological knowledge but nevertheless preservation of it's human and humane culture (reproductions of Earth's famous structures as a major example).

I think this is a great point... something that GITS SAC did which I think just enriches a series and also presumably makes it cheaper than hiring someone to design it all from scratch.

Regarding the VF-25 pilot that gets crushed by the red bug, when I first watched the raw video, I thought his name was Gideon. However after repeated watchings (12 times so far), I'm also leaning more towards Guillaume.

Not that it really matters, as he is puree now.

I think his name is "Henry Gilliam". It can be seen in the ending credits :)

And after 12 viewings so far, I'm still not getting bored and plan to watch it another 2 more times tonight (AiA sub). Reallly really excited about Frontier. The character designs, mecha designs, music, action, story, enemy. All fantastic. This is probably the best first episode of an anime ever IMO.

Guys, how long is the first episode? I located a file from AiA and it seems like it's only 26 minutes long. Is this accurate? I coulda sworn someone said it was an one hour.

The special including Ep 1 was 1 hour. Alone, the 1st episode is roughly 26 minutes.

sorry to say man buts it really 26minutes long, such a shame. I also have great reason to believe that Mikhail Brown, and Luca Angelloni are part of SMS just like

the OG skull sq. meaning mikhail is suppose to be like max (>??????) and Luca as kazaki, all I am going to say is I hope they die a vivid and intense death WHY YOU SAY BECAUSE I DONT WANT MY MAN OZAMA TO DIE, NO WAY IS HE GONNA DIE, NOPE I DONT CARE WHAT YOU SAY, OZAMA WILL MOST LIKELY BAG THE SHERYL LOOK ALIKE B))

This episode has a surprisingly large rewatch value. Kinda scary, don't think I've ever rewatched something so many times within such a short period of time. Mayhaps digital crack is hidden in it somewhere?

I find it kinda odd that Alto wouldnt be in it too. We all know that Michael(sp?) is the #1 in the school. But from what i gather, Alto was #2 (maybe just because he's too impulsive and emotional?) So why wouldnt he be recruited too.

Kinda got the same feeling too about Ozuma and the misa-type girl (Lt. Glass, i think)

That does add a bit more clarity to the announcement. I've always wondered if the colony fleets were like travelling governerships. It may be possible that the reason why they retained the name UN (United Nations) was because each new colony was considered a "nation" world as opposed to a colony world.

However I am curious as to why the UN or at least Spacy was reformed in the NUNS?

As for Alto and the SMS, it is entirely possible that Micheal and Luca are "cadets" or "apprentices" in the SMS and qualified through school, yet Alto hasn't for some reason. Sketchley already pointed out that the "Highschool" is probably like a vocational highschool for pilots.

my friend on phunk-one.com (not sure if the forum is still up, the admin told me that he was takin' the site down) lives in japan and he bought the uncut limited edition dvd set of macross for like $600-700 (but he said that it came with two 1/45 yamato valkrie, other bonuses and that he's a HUGE macross fan). he said that it included deleted scenes like hikaru and misa's wedding at the end of ep. 36, the sdf-2/megaroad leavin' earth with hikaru, misa and minmei at the end of ep. 36, max and milia havin' discussions of fakin' their divorce for the safety of the zentraedi/human race (and the reason why we find out that they are divorced in macross 7) and other scenes that they weren't able to fit into the tv series time limit. i was hopin' that animeigo's uncut version contains these scenes 'cause i have anime friend's fansubs version of the tv show.

If that is indeed the case, then your friend should rip those scenes and show the rest of us. I am a bit skeptical it is legit personally...

Sorry, this whole thing about Max & Millia faking their divorce smells like fanfic to me. I'm definitely calling BS on it.

Besides which, if such an extra existed, it'd be all over the internet, youtube, torrent, etc. More than B.S., I call shenanigans!

They are supositions based on available information and the new retcons, nothing more, I make no authoritative statements of any kind. If my posts are actually" read" instead of reacted to, it would be clear.

I make a statement and Duke responds with replies akin to "no it isn't...", "you're wrong", "maybe maybe not", etc... no real substance to any counter position in the debate. It's like arguing with my 10 year old nephew, actually scratch that last, my nephew is much more eloquent (scary smart that boys is)...

None of my statements can be deemed "definitive". We are speculating on what all this new information means and how it may or may not fit into current continuity, assuming this is going to be the originial continuity. Until we get more episodes to view and the story is fleshed out more, it's all speculation. Unfortunately some have taboos and the reaction to said taboos tend to slip through into their responses.

I am open to anythng Kawmori throws at us. Hell I've come to appreciate Mac7 for what it is (that's saying a LOT). Thus far I am very intrigued by what we've seen of Frontier so far...

Ah, well if you are indeed just speculating and not making statements that's fine and there is no reason to argue, except to provide further information. However, Duke and others are reacting to statements you've posted that are written in a rather definitive manner. Such as the one I quoted, that you've gone back and forth with Duke over. You stated, in no uncertain terms, that the M0 incident had been declassified. The way you wrote it was not suggesting that the incident may have been declassified, but that it had been declassified prior to the events beginning in Frontier. Duke was merely pointing out, in his own way, that there is nothing to suggest that this is a certainty.

Perhaps there is a miscommunication? From that post, Duke has mainly been criticizing that one single point, which was stated as a definitive as written, and his argument has been pretty much entirely to point out that this is not something we know as a definitive. After all, in a text based environment such as a web forum, how you write something is every bit as important as what you're trying to say. It would avoid further miscommunication to avoid definitive terms when speculating.

From this link: http://www.famitsu.com/anime/news/1212399_1558.html

Alto's family is not just a line of kabuki players. They're a line of male kabuki players dressed as females. That's probably how he got teased as "Hime/Princess", I wouldn't be surprised if his father was a queen in one play. Tee hee.

So its gonna turn out he's a kid whose mad at his dad?

I wonder why he doesnt cut his hair? Also wonder if that charm around his neck (i think it is a charm rather than a necklace or dogtag) have some significance?

Watched Episode 1 of MF for the first time.

Am well pleased with it. Some quick thoughts:

1) Bassara is now instantly cool compared to this hideous celebrity byaach! because AT LEAST Bassara was an idealist and had a good cause that he sang for - this Shyrly Temple or whatever her name is is a just a hideous spoiled celebrity who doesn't even sing well - it's like Paris Hilton without the porn video. I hope she gets squashed by a bug :)

2) Princess Boy is a very nice play on sexuality and male pride. I find it surprising and pleasant - largely because it's so far away from what I would have done with a main character and I like it when a show does things totally different to how I would have done them...

3) Nyan Nyan girl IS GREAT! :) The dance, the waitress outfit, the silly frog-phone - I love everything about her. Top marks :) It's the Minmay who will never stop being the cute girl who works at Nyan Nyan, the Minmey who never gets spoiled by celebrity life and shacks up with her cousin - it's everything good about Minmey and then some:)

4) The enemy mecha... meh! I'm not happy about them. They look like something out of Starship troopers. I KNOW I'd like them if Yamato did toys of them - but for now we got a pretty unimpressive glimpse of them - have to get used to them or something...

5) Misa Hayes wanna-be: I like the fact that she's there - but not sure about her yet.

All in all - good stuff.

Obviously -the mecha is spot on.

I don't understand why people have an argument about anime and planes "flying" in the space.

Chill out and take a beer. At least, that's what I'm doing ! Kanpai !

They don't. Look at the original vf1. It has a ton of thrusters all over the place. They could not animated the effects of it due to budget.

Btw. I don't belive that frontier city is any bigger then city 7. It is just that city 7 had high sky scrapers and frontier 7 is more urban and sub urban then tall city structures. Most people think it is big due to the small size of the ship in front of the city. It looks pretty small actualy. It is probably 2-400 meters wide. the docking mechanism is supposed to be 150 or so meters wide on city 7. It also does not look modular. they probably decided to not have the main battle fortress docked with the city when they created it.

I don't know why but the NUNS like NUN5 to me.

Civilian and military government ? A separation of the two could be a logical possibility.

WOW that puts things in a better perspective, and I was right mikihail is the new max based upon the color of his valk helmet. And what in Benders name is Brera Sterne, looks like something out of final fantasy. thanks Kresphy

If the bugs are biomechanical fighters I'd lay odds that Brera Sterne is the pilot of the red one.

One thing that I hope changes in MF is that the VF-171 pilots get a backbone. I can understand them not being aces (though it'd be cool if a few of them were so we can get some good VF-171 action), but having military pilots freak out the way they did was pretty sorry.

Wow, a trailer for the second episode already! What a great Christmas!

Looks like Ranka is getting sucked out through the city dome breach. I bet Aruto ends up saving her, just like Hikaru in DYRL. Wonder if they get trapped in an abandoned section of the ship after? heh, maybe we'll get a nude Ranka shower scene.

And looks like Ozma comes to save the day in his armored VF-25.

I can't seem to find the trailer for the second episode. =( I've checked all of the links on the first post of this thread. Could someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Does anyone else get an updated MacII vibe from the mecha *ducks head*

there's a definite and deliberate nod to MacII in the show. When that pilot ejects from the vf-25 and fires off his weapon at the bug, that little helmet thing pops up over his head, a'la macross II. I thought it was a nice touch. And yeah, the new FAST packs on the vf-25 give me macross II flashbacks as well.
