Macross 25th Anniversary TV Special thread *READ THE 1ST POST*

I haven't watched the subbed version yet---is the VF-25 specifically NAMED Valkyrie, or is just "called a valkyrie". I'm not sure if it's canon in Macross to call "all transforming jets" valkyries, but we the fans sure do. If the -25 is NAMED Valkyrie, it should be the Valkyrie II. Unless we've got a new/retconned universe where the VF-1 never existed, and the -25 is the first to use the name. VF-0 never did get a name IIRC.

As for reusing names on planes---all the time. F-4 Phantom II, A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-35 Lightning II, F-5E Tiger II, etc. And---VF-4 Lightning III, VF-22 Sturmvogel II.

In regards to using tanks over destroids, It seems more logical to have tanks covering ground that won't tear up the streets or environment inside the colony.

then they should make destroids with caterpillars on their legs. er, wait then they'd look too much like a guntank..

my 2 cents..

love the animation quality. the frontier city and the battles look amazing! also love the myriad homages to past series and how the 1st ep appears to be a mixture of the 1st ep of macross tv and the beginning of dyrl.

ranka reminds me of a mix between minmay and that one zolan chick from D7, with maybe a little mao thrown in for good measure. i'm glad she doesn't remind me of mylene. don't tell me she's a dog girl?

alto looks effeminate, but at least he talks and acts like a guy. i was afraid he was gonna be some kind of wuss.

a lot of comparisons have been made between sheryl and past macross characters, but she reminds me of janis marin more than anyone else. i honestly didn't care for her singing. sounds like she's speaking some kind of jibberish language, but i guess non-Japanese speaking fans are used to that. freaking kanno and her jibberish languages.

Pretty sure she isn't a dog-girl; she clearly has human ears (usually in anime where there's a dog or catgirl, they actually have animal ears, not animal ears in addition to human ears).

Personally, I also like the made-up languages Yoko Kanno uses in some of her songs, including "Wanna Be An Angel" especially from Macross Plus.

it is canon to call all transforming jets valkyries, in the series. the characters in m7 refer to all transformable fighters as valkyries, including but not limited to basara's 19, the "fire valkyrie." basara says in the show "gimmie back my valkyrie" several times when they take it away for maintenance. don't know for sure what to call the 25 because there's no way to say "a valkyrie" in the japanese language. i think they were referring to it as "a valkyrie" and that it actually has a different name, but i'm just speculating.

edit: one interesting thing to note. there is no reference of the word valkyrie anywhere in macross plus. they refer to them the entire time as kahensentouki, or variable fighters.

Yep, they were there (M7 ep.15), but only as "attractions". It is unclear if they are no longer used in combat and have still some utility as "labour" machines.

well they were "attractions" but the purpose of the Batteloid festival was to find suitable war machines City 7 could make use of, and we did see the Monster in action (true we see that it should NOT be used for civil defense).

Basically my understanding was that they found that a Valkyrie batteloid was just as well suited to ground ops as a destroid so they scrapped destroids (except things like the Variable monster of course)

i know that we refer to all transforming jets as Valkyries or valks, i just wasnt sure that was an in-story thing. The only reference in Frontier that I noticed was Alto saying soemthing like 'is the nw valkyrie deployed already?

Actually if I remember correctly the Monster II had treads on the bottom of it's feet, the MII Destroids all had wheels and the Cheyenne also had wheels.

Hello all!! I am a long time Macross fan and I just saw Macross Frontier. I must say I have not been this excited about a new Macross series in a VERY long time!!!!! This looks so awesome; the animation, the music, the constant adrenaline rush!!! It's all perfect and I can't wait to see more. I have nothing but hope and confidence in this series and will try my best to keep up and discuss it with you all! Thanks for the awesome board.

The Monster II had some kind of hovering system from what the animation suggested.

It would be a pretty weird retcon if they make it that the VF-1 one never existed when they have a statue of one right on top of the school.

She was singing Japanese with a whole lot of English words spoken the Japanese way. I also think that her voice is a bit too throaty, I like Megumi Nakajima's voice better

i'm loving it so far.

i think the plus was more ghost in the shell (good movie, i actually bought the dvd) than macross and that zero went to much into the supernaturally side like ninja scroll (another good movie, i actually bought this dvd too) and "kinda" rewrote the macross universe. i liked plus and zero but they just didn't "feel" like macross to me. i'm still pissed that 7 made max and milia get divorced (one of the highlights of sdf macross was their dogfights and synchonized fightin') and then they had to go and ruin that memory for me (i haven't seen the uncut scenes from the dvd set but my friend told me that the divorce is a "trick" and it's not real, but they acted like it wasn't a trick in 7). i watched all of 7, encore, the galaxy is calling me and the dynamite 7 despite ppl tellin' me not to 'cause it wasn't good. dynamite 7 was actually good even tho' it didn't have the macross feel to me. no comment on II and the reporter/pilot 'cause i found at that the creator of macross didn't even write that ova/movie after i rented it (and hence it's alternate universe tag).

anyways, frontier seems like it will get back to bein' macross for me. mechs, pilots (that fly them to destroy the enemy) and war. i've been waitin' for news about the next macross sequel since i read about it six months ago and it seems that the predications and rumors about it centerin' around a school (just like full metal panic? Fumoffu which i haven't watch yet along with the 2nd raid... i've just seen fmp!, i hope i can get it, megazone 1, 2 & 3 and other anime off of my "unusable with this motherboard but workin' hard drive" so that i don't have to re-dl it) were WRONG. i didn't expect to see ep 01 so soon, i just happened to go to the macross section of crunchyroll.com and i saw it (i have them dl'ed and dvd so i wan't even plannin' on watchin' it on there)now i can't wait for ep 02) on there. so i luckily found a seiyan subs mu dl on anime-eden.com/forum. then i torrented a shinsen subs dl so that i could know what sheryl was singin'. so i had to upload it to flyupload even before i found out how terrible the translation was by seiyan (that gave me an excuse to make a dupl. thread on anime-eden for an already upped episode).

i have a feelin' that they made up a new villian instead of makin' it the supervision army. but it would be interestin' to see who the supervision army is. but with a name like the supervision army i would think that they are the "space police" and that they were at war with the zentraedi 'cause the zentraedi only knew war, war and more war...

Something I noticed that I haven't heard anyone else mention is how rude and selfish the pop idol singer (Sheryl) is in this series. While it's different, I like that they're actually going a different direction with her than the other series. Maybe she'll end up being hated in the end and someone else will take over? Just a thought. Not to say that she isn't sexy or can't sing. LOL That one song that she does sounds AWESOME. Any thoughts on how her character will progress?

While it's different, I like that they're actually going a different direction with her than the other series. Maybe she'll end up being hated in the end and someone else will take over? Just a thought. Not to say that she isn't sexy or can't sing. LOL That one song that she does sounds AWESOME. Any thoughts on how her character will progress?

I had said the same thing, and as someone pointed out to me, how would you expect an intersteller pop star to act? Also, she comes off a bit differently in the good subs as compared to the bad subs.

the only part that i thought was rude and selfish was when she was tryin' to escape towards the end of the show. then i realized that it was her manager/escort/friend that said those lines and not her.

my bad, i just went back to that scene and sheryl did say that. i so used to readin' the subs that i didn't noticed whose lips were movin'. i thought that the only thing sheryl said was "foolish child" (shinsen subs) and that the other lady had said everything else in sheryl's defense.
