misterryno
I am sure that there is a topic somewhere started already with something of this nature but I just wanted to let everyone know that I am currently wathing the SDF Macross TV Series. I am about to start episode 15 and I must say.....this is GREAT!!! I mean, I really enjoyed DYRL, but the series is really awesome as well. Well....that's it. Exsedol
It is great! I love it too. So much better than Robotech. I like both equally. I grew up with robotech. It got me in to anime. I knew it was a compilation of 3 japanese series but back then it wasn't exactly the easiest thing to find english subtitled versions of the originals so my adulthood has been a nice rebirth in to the original macross and southern cross and mospeada shows, which are cooler than the robotech versions but robotech is sentimental. I even picked up SD: Orguss on the way so I owe homage to Robotech
Tekkaman Blade
I grew up with Robotech. However, I definitely prefer Macross over it ever since I saw it. The main thing that turned me over to Macross was how much the personalities of the characters seemed to change. I hated Minmay with all my being in Robotech. She came off as a completely self-centered brat, but when I saw Macross, she was more nice and "real" than she had seemed in Robotech and I felt sorry for her at the end instead of laughing at her. Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0
I too grew up with Robotech but was vastly more impressed by the original Macross after seeing the Animeigo sets. Much more mature, and everything makes more sense. It inspires me to buy more chunky monkeys, and flip through my Perfect Memory book. kensei
I grew up with Robotech too, but it died ever since I saw the original. Nothing beats the original.
UN Spacy
I also picked up HG's/animeigo remastered Macross boxset recently. After watching Robotech it's the little things that make Macross more complete, precise, and mature.

That's why I'm ingaged.....no more games.
miriya
When I was a kid and watched Robotech I did not like Minmay and I wondered why Rick did not go for Lisa right away. Now that I have seen Macross I did not particularly like Minmay (sure better than Robotech though) and still wondered why Hikaru was so obsessed and why he did not go for Misa sooner. Sure, she is a rock star and I have been obsessed with Bjork for years but I think that this is part of the plot, part of the story to get the audience to be like, "Dude! Forget Minmay and go for Misa!" and then draw that feeling on for us from episode to episode. I think that the teasing of our emotions is part of what makes it so enjoyable. Instead of instant gratification which is over too soon. My $0.

My $0.02 One of my favorite pivotal moments is in "Force of Arms" when Hikaru sees Kaifun kiss Minmei, Shao Pai Laon plays in the background, and Hikaru goes ape with his Super valkyrie after bidding farewell to Minemei. The shimmer from his visor and the visor of the VF-1S was well timed and awesome in that scene. Its just more dramatic in the original than in robotech. danth
I like the original better, but I still really like the BGM from Robotech. And to be honest the Robotech opening blows the Macross song out of the water! Boy, I know I'll get heat for that one, but it's how I feel. Even the Minmei music has some nostalgia value for me, but it's pretty bad. One other thing I noticed -- Love Drifts Away is not as dramatic or energizing as We Will Win. When I watched the big showdown in Macross, I noticed the fight lacked the dramatic punch that the Robotech episode had, since they were fighting to such a slow song. But seriously, We Will Win? Man, what a stupid lyric!
Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0
"We will win" did not match the melancholy mood of the battle the way that "Ai wa nageru" does. The music in Macross is matched well to the scenes. It has more impact, and is timed quite well. I've started rewatching the animeigo version. This time in its entirety and in ORDER. Currently on episode 3. I want a VF-1D more than I wanted one back when I was 3. The interpersonal relationships between the characters are great. The mayor is a prick. Global should have thrown him off the ship. I liked how Claudia and the bridge bunnies immediately called out Misa for being too uptight. The characterizations here are much better than in Robotech. Also 180 kills for Roy in the Unification wars? Damn, I knew he was an ace, but never knew he had THAT many kills! The music playing during his escort of Hikaru was great. It says "THIS guy is bad ass". It was funny how Claudia mentioned his 5 kills during a raging hangover. Heh ace in a day with alcohol. I can see why Hikaru fell for Minmei. The sequence showing her save is still one of the most impressionable I've seen.
misterryno
Well...I just finished the SDF Macross TV Series...after falling asleep during the final episode 3 seperate times...I have been soooooooooo tired lately. Anyway....I almost cried when Misa told Hikaru that she loved him and always would. I know he'd get rid of that self centered, scatter brained, can't make up her mind beatch Minmei. GOOOOOOO HIKARU!!!! Smart man. I actually think Misa is hotter

The Macross theme on the other hand rings of hot blooded Japanese male ballads such as the Yamato, Mazinger Z, & Galaxy Express themes. VFTF1
I agree with Graham - that's exactly why I'm staying a Bachelor woot! Seriously - the problem wasn't that Minmey was fickle - the problem was the Hikaru was a dweeb who didn't understand women - probably because women are not as easy to steer as an airplane. Roy had the right idea about women (and airplanes for that matter!) ... But Hikaru just got lucky enough to meet a lady - namely Misa - which saved him from a lot of grief. The moral of the story? 1. The Majority of Women are Like Minmey 2. Which is why the majority of men should be and have to be like Roy 3. Unless they are lucky enough to find a Lady like Misa VFTF1

Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0
Just got done with episode 4. Holy hell Roy is so much better here than he was in Robotech! Roy rules. Minmay has got to be the most indecisive and random woman in the entire franchise. Not to mention a coward. The end of episode 4 says it all. Still not as bad as she was in Robotech. It was funny how the entire bridge crew was laughing at Misa and trying to hide it. She is too uptight thus far. I like how direct Roy is. Does anyone know which studios animated certain episodes? I know Anime friend did some of episode 4, as some of it was horrible! Minamy must be the first woman Hikaru has been around in a long time, he seems rather naive to women. But all in all I really enjoyed it. And to you Graham, TOOOO FUNNY. Really 10 years??? That is AWESOME. Congrats on that mate.

But all in all I really enjoyed it. I just finished watching all 36 and I think it was great. The episodes that you describe as sucking I am guessing are the ones that are a bit slow or "girl heavy". I agree that some of this stuff could have been better balanced and scattered more evenly throughout the series, but all in all if you are into the overall plot of the story the slow parts do hold a good entertainment value. After you have watched the entire series watch DYRL right away. WOW! Talk about blowing the top of your head off. No slow spots there. You get 36 episodes jammed into 120 minutes
Exsedol
hehe I'd have watched SDFM then 2012 and then DYRL. Ginrai
Minamy must be the first woman Hikaru has been around in a long time, he seems rather naive to women. Hikaru is 16 years old. Of COURSE he is inexperienced with women.
Anna
I am in the process of converting my dvd's to ipod video format. I was watching the spacefold scene and was relieved to see that Vanessa was actually shocked to find out they were near Pluto. In Robotech, when Gloval asks her where they are, she just calmly says, "Inside the Orbit of the planet Pluto" whereas her Macross counterpart is more like, "Um, captain about our location." as if she isn't really sure how to break the news that they were WAY OFF
Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0
Hikaru is 16 years old. Of COURSE he is inexperienced with women. I completely forgot about that, that explains it. Some of my favorite parts thus far are Hikaru's first transformation of the VF-1D and consequently falling into Minmay's room, Roy saving Hikaru, and Hikaru saving Minmay in midair. The ambush from the rings(his first combat sortie) was great too.

warpaint22
Ah, so naive... I've been married for 6 years, with her for 10 and the games change, but never stop. Well I'm in between.... Been married for 8 years and I agree the games change and never stop but they do become more painful. Especially when you say "Hey babe, Yamato is releasing a new valk, (ducks for cover) and I really need one maybe two for my collection (starts making bed on couch)." Anyway I'm with the guys who love robotech for nostalgic reasons, brought valks to my childhood and I've always loved the Mospeada mecha. But alas Macross is so much more mature and it makes a huge difference. Once you have seen macross I find it hard to watch Robotech with the same inthusiasm as I once did. I think there is room for both but it's what HG has done to Macross fans. If HG had confidence in thier product they would let the fans decide which they prefered instead of basicly banning Macross in the west. But this debate has been done to death. Macross ROCKS, it's the original and the best hands down but I'm more of a DYRL fan as I guess I like super and strike valks more than the standart type but for story SDFM is just awesome. But all in all it's the mecha I love and macross has the best of the lot.
energon
Is it a requirement to say bad things about robotech? Is it bad to have your own opinion and not be afraid to say you love Robotech? I love Robotech and like Macross and will not change that opinion and yes I have watched both. I like Toynami and Yamato and even Bandai and the only thing I hate about this place is the constant battying about Robotech. Anybody in their late 20s grew up on Robotech and I really doubt it whey members in the US say they new about Macross in the 80s because there was no internet and barley any import of toys and cartoons. Its like Transformer fans saying “I hate Transformers, I prefer Diaclone and Microman, its more realistic”.

Macross owes it's life to Robotech and Americans. Like it or not it's a fact. I learned to like Macross better though cause I didn't like Masters and New Gen that much. Macross is god and Robotech is it's prophet here on earth Without it I'd have never gotten in to Anime. Keith
B.S., without Robotech, Macross would be in much better shape in the U.S., with Funi, Bandai, & ADV fighting over who licenses what over here! Also, if you don't like robotech bashing, go to robotech.com. This is Macross town!
