Valkyrie addict Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 Hello...I was watching the differences between the VF-4 in Flashback and the macross design book and the much later differences in the VF-4G in VFX... I was just wondering, in the Macross universe...is there any explanation for the differences?? why is it 'G' and Lighting 'III'?? I know that's it's most likely due to Kawamori revesiting an old old design he didn't intend to developed I supposed the VF-4 in FB2012 was also being tested by Hikaru and perhaps the final design is the later in VFX?? what are your ideas on this guys? mikeszekely Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 (edited) The original Lightning was the P-38 Lightning, an American WWII Fighter. Lightning II was a working name for the F-22, before they settled on Raptor. So, at the time, the VF-4 would have been the third plane to use the name. As for the differences, the VF-4G has upgraded engines. I think I saw some lineart a few years back of a different head unit, but I'm not sure where it came from or if its canon. The one Hikaru was flying wasn't necessarily a test plane; the VF-4's mass production began in February of 2012, and the Megaroad didn't launch until September or October, if I remember right. Rather, the VF-4's production ended in 2022 and it was officially replaced by the VF-11 in 2030. A variant with newer engines is the only reason why anyone would use one in 2047, when the first VF-X game took place. Edited October 12, 2007 by mikeszekely Quote
Sumdumgai Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 The VF-4G, as mikeszekely said, is an updated version of the VF-4, much like the VF-1X in use during 2047. Kawamori didn't finish the VF-4 design for battroid until Macross Digital Mission VFX (VFX2 is so much better, it's not only playable, it's fun!). Quote

IIRC, Kawamori never planned to do a battroid version of the VF-4 initially (he just designed a "cool" looking fighter for the Angel Paints animation in FB2012), but when he got back involved with the Macross franchise in the 90's , he then created one as Sumdumgai said. "The VF-4 is tranformable, but only now as a retcon." Explanation: Although those fighters' GERWALK mode and Battroid modes were not protrayed when first shown, mecha designer Shoji Kawamori has specifically described both the VF-X-4 and VF-4 as transformable variable fighters since the begining when they were drawn (1983 and 1987 respectively). Their stated ability to transform is not a recent retcon. Translation: Kawamori will get to it when he gets to it. Quote
