sqidd Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 I tried searching for the answer to this, and I swear I have seen part of my answer somewhere so I apologies if this is one of those noob questions. I want to watch all of the Macross stuff start to finish. I found where to get the first 36 episodes in English, but I don’t know what comes next in the “series” and if it can be had in English. So how about a hand? What is the order of all the Macross stuff and the name of it? Is it available in English? A good place to purchase it? I would like to get everything “Macross” in English and to have a weekend of it. Thanks Jason Quote
miriya Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Hi there Sqidd, I must somehow convince you to watch the 36 episodes of macross in Japanese with English subtitles. This is the BEST way to see it. You can get it here for $39.99 http://www.robotech.com/store/viewproduct.php?id=93 The original Japanese show newly dubbed into english is available but really just watch the above. It is available for $34.99 here http://www.robotech.com/store/viewproduct.php?id=243 Of course you could watch Robotech. After watching the entire Robotech macross saga and then watching the original Japanese with english subtitles. I formally renounced Robotech and became a macross purist. I grew up on Robotech and had loved it for decades but after seeing the original with eng subs I now think that Robotech is really cheezy crap (with a huge amount of sentimental value). I implore you to watch it in its original form with eng subs. It is quite amazing how HG and Carl Macik butchered the show. Macross timeline coming up..... Quote
miriya Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 First in the timeline is macross zero, which is a tie at best macross ever with the original show for me. IT IS JUST AMAZING!!! WARNING: Do not buy it from ebay or an anime store. The only commercially available macross zero DVDs contain the WORST SUBTITLING EVER! I just could not understand it! It is screwed up because it was translated from Japanese into chinese and then from chinese into english and it is just rubbish! There is a perfect translation available fan sub version by ANBU which is the BEST!!! You can not get this on DVD but you can torrent it to your computer and burn a DVD from there. You can find this on many torrents around. I think this one has it here: http://old.sharemanija.net/modules.php?op=...le&sid=8837 More soon.... Quote

I am hoping that Macross does the same thing to me! I got the Robotech box set a month ago (that’s what started the toy thing) and I have watched two discs ad the only reason I am still watching it is sentimental value. The purists on this board are purists for a reason, Macross has got to be great. The subs on the other hand…………..I won’t survive! As much as I agree with you that to get the whole experience I need to watch the dubbed version, I can’t do it. It’s just not in my DNA. I have tried watching all sorts of great movies that were dubbed and I can’t make it past a half hour. Your urgings are very appreciated. The timeline and some direction towards a place to purchase would be great (assumptive close ). Quote
miriya Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Ok so first is macross zero (not yet available in dubbed verision - best sub is ANBU) Then there is the TV show Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (best is the original Japanese with english subtitles) Then there is Macross Do You Remember Love (DYRL) the movie which has several versions available. I got this one and am happy although some other members may be able to point you in to the direction of a better quality release. Link is here http://discountanimedvd.com/detail.asp?dvdno=117 Then there is Macross 2012 which kind of goes simultaneously with SDF Macross TV, the movie, and then a little tid bit more story that happens after the DYRL movie. It is mainly Minmay music videos with some flash backs and some added stuff. Link here http://discountanimedvd.com/detail.asp?dvdno=220 Then there is Macross Plus OVA with 4 episodes and then a movie version that is those episodes condensed with stuff taken out and a little bit added. I personally like the OVA best but I own both and enjoy both. I really love Macross Plus! It is second after Zero and SDF Macross for me. It is available in Japanese with English Subtitles as well as english dub. OVA Link http://www.amazon.com/Macross-Plus-Collect...1148&sr=1-8 Movie version link http://www.amazon.com/Macross-Plus-Movie-B...1148&sr=1-7 More soon.... Quote
miriya Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Next after Macross Plus is Macross 7, Macross 7 Dynamite 7, and Macross 7 the movie. You can get them all here http://discountanimedvd.com/detail.asp?dvdno=14607 but it is subbed and I do not know if there is a dubbed version available. Debatable after that is Macross II Lovers again and Macross II the Movie but some would say that this comes right after DYRL. Can someone more knowledgeable let me know too. There is an english dub of the movie link http://www.amazon.com/Macross-II-Dub-Hirok...a/dp/6303695345 and the OVA Lovers again is very hard to find. You can maybe torrent is somewhere or find on ebay. Mine does not have a dub version only subs. Another cool think is the 20th aniversary DVD which is not even subbed as far as I can tell. It actually crashes my computer but it is worth it for all the cool scenes. Link http://discountanimedvd.com/detail.asp?dvdno=1637 Maybe some other members can correct me on some of this stuff? Quote
miriya Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 If you have to go with dubbed version of SDF macross go with this one instead of robotech. http://www.robotech.com/store/viewproduct.php?id=243 Quote
sqidd Posted August 12, 2007 Author Posted August 12, 2007 Wow, thanks for the homework. I didn't know there was that much stuff! I'm excited Quote
valk1j Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 There is no dub of Macross 7. The best set for Macross 7 are these by FX: http://www.discountanimedvd.com/detail.asp...ateName=Macross http://www.discountanimedvd.com/detail.asp...ateName=Macross Macross II the Movie is the same as Macross II Lovers Again, there is no difference the Movie just puts each episode together. Macross II is not part of the Macross continuity it is an alternate universe of Macross. Macross continuity: Macross Zero : 5 episode OVA SDF Macross : 36 episode TV series Macross Flashback 2012 : 30 minute OVA music compilation with about 5 minutes of new footage Macross Do You Remember Love? : 2 hour movie that takes place in the Macross universe c.2031 Macross Plus: 4 episode OVA and 2 hour movie with added footage and re-arranged scenes for better flow in movie format, some scenes from OVA are removed. Macross 7 : 49 episode TV series Macross 7 Encore : 3 sort of missing episodes from series - they take place during the series Macross 7 Movie : 1/2 hour movie - OVA type animation but takes place during the series as well Macross 7 Dynamite : 4 episode OVA that takes place a year after the events in the above series All the Macross 7 stuff above is included in the 2 sets that i linked. Better to stick with subtitles and get used to them, because if Macross 25 is released here through Bandai Visual, they don't do dubs.... Quote

Mac II takes place approximately 60 years after the events depicted in DYRL and has a very different vision of the Macross universe post SW1 as opposed to the Studio Nue continuity. However with the release of the time/space slip of 1995 in the Stuido Nue continuity, who knows if that will somehow make Mac II a canon series, but in an alternate reality from the Nue continuity, as well as open the door to other AU Macross stories. Quote
Keith Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 I seriously doubt there will be AU Macross stories, as II proved, it just doesn't work. Besides, we already have Gundam. How many damn times do you want to see the Zentradi invade? Quote

Those are the ones that have the horrible translation for subtitles that make no sense whatsoever. I hold to my original statement that the best way to see Macross Zero is to watch the ANBU fansubs. Keith Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 True the translation is bad, but the ones with just English are DVD-R's, at least with the chinese subtitle versions, he'll get a real DVD with better video quality. Quote

sqidd Posted September 9, 2007 Author Posted September 9, 2007 Well I am half way through the SDFM series right now. I watch 2-3 a day. Strangly enough my wife got into them! Which is cool. I have to wait for her to be home to watch and episode now though I am sooooooo impressed with the series over R%$&*$#@!. I'm glad that I only watched the first 6 episodes of the re-issue last month before I got the SDFM series. It's cool that I watched those episodes so the Macross series could be put in perspective. As in, how much better it is. I had not seen a R%&^*%$#@$ episode since I was 15, so I don't remember much of the story line, which is cool because SDFM is all surpises for me. I just saw a clip from Zero ad I had no idea that the anumation was so much more advaced, I can't wait to watch it! I thought of something the other night though that I didn't ask in this thread. I asked for the timeline and the order of Macross, but what I didn't ask for is in what order they were released. I am assuming that SDFM was first ad at some point Zero was a pre-quil. Is that correct? What order were they released in? I curretly have: Zero SDFM Plus vol 1 Plus vol 2 Macross II I am thiking I need to get my hands on DYRL at this point. It's not like I need another DVD yesterday or anything, I am ot watchig them that fast. But I do want to start lookig for more soon so I have them in waiting. thanks again for your help! Quote
