I've also been looking for a way to re-read all those comics. I was just a teen when reading them and I treated them all like disposable junk... I'd read one when I bought it then throw it in my closet. Years later when I left home my mom threw them all away.

In 2002 Marvel put out 5 Trade Paperbacks that covered issues 1-50 with cover art by J. Scott Campbell

I picked these up myself back then, but I do still see them around at Local comic shops in L.A.

I'm sure a google or ebay search will find em

The J.Scott Campbell covers sucked. His art has detoriated into overly exaggerated figures(more so than before, his stuff before at least had a sense of realism).

Ray Park is studying up on the old comics to find out more about Snake Eyes. Turns out he was a fan before he was casted as well.

IESB has an interview up about the Joe movie. I love how some of these questions are danced around, without any real answers being given. Basically, if you liked Transformers, you'll probably like GI Joe. However, fans of good movies will have to find entertainment elsewhere.

Well yeah, he's no Michael Golden but they're not that bad. At least it wasn't Rob Liefeld.

Darth Maul studying the old comics?

I guess he's looking for some classic Snakes Eyes lines like

...

and

...

What about him studying the new comics? Are they considered canon by the old fans? (At this point, I've read far more of the new comics than the old ones)

As far as I know the original Larry Hama penned Marvel Comics are the "official" canon of GI Joe. They are widely accepted as the "true" story of GI Joe followed by the Sunbow animated TV show... except that Sunbow pretty much did their own thing story wise and the two mediums clash on several subjects and characters.

For what it's worth, the Hama comics are miles above the relatively juvenile TV show.

Yes, the new comics actually tie into the old marvel run, though Devils Due did some things that irritate many, like killing off Lady Jaye for nothing more than shock value.

Agreed.

GI Joe has a canon?

Yes, the marvel run and current comic run. Reloaded was another continuity though.

I certainly consider them Cannon and why not? they continue off of the original storyline, and they're good. the only problem I have is that they ret-con Megatron out of the final issues of the original run.

OH and the Lady Jaye thing sucked yeah... but the whole Red Shadows story-arc was horrible imho.

I agree, with the exception of the lame-ass GI Joe vs. the Transformers cross-over series .... meh!

Well the original crossover had no support from Larry Hama, and Megatron's appearance towards the end of the original series was forced too. It was Hasbro that wanted to see the two series crossover for marketing purposes, there were appearances by Flint and Cobra Commander in the Transformers cartoon as well. I can understand the decision from Hasbro's perspective they were the two most popular toylines they had at the time... both with an action theme of two armies fighting each other and both in the realm of science fiction to some extent... but while GI Joe do not seem out of place in the Transformers universe a lot of people have a problem with Transformers in the Joe universe. Personally I've liked all the different GI Joe/Transformers crossovers cause it never warped my whole perception of the Joe Universe that Transformers exist in it... (though if one follows the conclusion that GI Joe takes place in the mainstream marvel universe because Spider-man also appeared in the original TF mini-series AND J Jonah Jameson appeared in the GI Joe comics, it gets a little weird). I just took it that, "sure their are aliens in GI Joe... giant mechanical aliens but we're considered with the slightly more realistic adventures of an anti-terrorist task force and won't mention the TFs very much... got ya!"

GI Joe and TF has always been connected to some extent... for budget reasons most of the BGM between the two cartoons was shared for example.

I can understand why Devils Due ignored Megatron at the end of the series and made their own crossovers an alternate universe but I would not have a problem with a in-continuity crossover either... infact I'd like to see the G2 Transformers with the Autobot/Decepticon alliance that was formed at the end... that would be interesting.

I wonder how a TF/GI Joe movie would be received?

It would pretty much play out like Transformers. The spec-ops guys in the movie could just as easily been given distinct personalities, codenames, and characteristic quirks. The irony here is that if a direct representation of GI Joe were to be injected into the Transformers movieverse, it would actually render the new Transformers silly and unrealistic instead of the other way around.

That's what I mean, talk about a stupid-ass idea ... just lame.

hmm... I dunno, there are a few things that would make it diffent then the military angle played out in The Transformers movie. And would an anti-terrorist team with code names be less silly then a fast talking and comically inept Men in Black team?

They are talking about on the Joe board must aren't happy.

If you try to google image search you'll find some gay mild pornish picks. The actor was a former Arbcombie & Finch model. He is best known for playing white thug looking guy who learns to dance in the movie "Step Up"

All of the casting choices look terrible for this film. They've gone way too young and Cheap IMO.

If we need any of the Rawhides it's Law and Order.

"Hey Law & Orders the theme man! I drive the car; he finds the bombs... we tried it the other way but it didn't work"

Or Jinx cause she's hot and she's Storm Shadow's cousin! booyah!

I'm think about how Rex becomes Cobra Commander. I assume Rex had to be skilled enough and have a good character to be part of the team. A G.i.Joe should be able to resist normal methods of persuasion and corruption. I than started to think will the Movie Cobra Commander be like the cartoon one? What if it was the don't ask don't tell policy? There is no reason for Rex if I was right for the team to leave it. There is no good reason to believe that the team is incompetent enough to choose some that wasn't right to join.

That movie is old news... If I recall right it was already linked elsewhere. Actually I'd say it was damn good for a fan movie... but what makes it corny is...

1) According to Joe intelligence Apophis was an Egyptian god??? According to Joe intelligence? We need military intelligence to look this stuff up? the Joes don't have access to an encyclopedia?

2) Why didn't Snake-eyes snap the Baroness' neck as well? He takes out a small fry with no qualms but only punches out a big snake and just leaves her there so she can recover?

3) When Lady Jaye breaks to go for the stone why does she shout? "Yo Joe!" and draw attention to her with drawl? wouldn't it be better to hope she isn't noticed in the chaos?

4) Why does Bludd tell Duke that Baroness went after Lady Jaye? They didn't seem to know up till that point and Cobra would have taken the day right there.

5) Why the fart did the Cobra Troopers want to take off Snake-eyes mask? He's not "Batman" it's not like knowing his face is going to do you any good... either just shoot him or tie him up.

It's stuff like that... and the whole ancient Egyptian artifact of teh powa! that GI Joe needs to avoid in the live action.

Ah, but that is precisely what makes GI Joe what it is--at least, as I remember the 80's cartoons:

--the totally ill-timed and inappropriate [in combat] rally cries; hey, you're one of the good guys and damned proud of it!

--the needless speeches revealing evil plans from the bad-guys

--the merciless arse kicking of faceless minions, while sparing the honchos to fight another day

--the irresistible urges to find out secret identities of good guys--and at the most inopportune times--even if it could cost you the advantage in a fight

lol, these are staples of the genre. while a 10 year old watching Saturday morning cartoons wouldn't give it a second thought, one can readily see how this might not fly with an audience of 20-30-somethings, no matter how wistful and reminiscent they may want to be...
