The OVA's were kinda short (and Plus didn't even take place during a war, so...)but I think they did their part well. They had their characters deal with the aftermath of an event, rather than during it like the last 9 eps. of the original series. Plus's is oblivous, Zero has more to do with how they're going to live with their survival mechanisms now that the war is dying off.

7 on the other hand had the characters far more relaxed in their common lives than they ever were in the original. And their stories were alot more silly in most cases, enough of comedy to enjoy but hard to take seriously. Nadesico is an example of what they should have strived for.

I hope we get to see some of the Supervision Army, but with the Protodevlin gone shouldn't they be as well?

Exactly, the OVA's are short, of course they're going to deal with one event. The difference is HOW they deal with the event. In Plus, you see Isamu , Guld and Myung actually struggle with their shared past and how it affects their current lives. You actually see the consequences of how each, individually, chose to deal with a traumatic event and the steps they each take in their own ways to deal with it. I hardly see how that can be described as shallow characterization.

And to call Isamu and Basara the same character is pretty off. Isamu may not care about what people think of him, but it's pretty obvious by the end of the OVA that it's nothing more than an act. A way for for him to protect himself from becoming emotionally attached to others, so that he won't be betrayed again. And even at the height of his acting out, he rarely tries to push his beliefs on others, instead it's more of a casual disregard and recklessness. Basara on the other hand, shoves his beliefs down other people's throats and has no motivations other than the infantile truism: war is bad, my singing can stop it!

As for Zero, zero showed a clash of cultures and philosophies. If juxtaposed hard and soft, flexible and rigid, moral objectivity and a subjective world view. The characters each came into it, having their personalities shaped by one moral and ethical code or another and their interactions were driven by it. They struggled with how reality and situations challenged their world views. Again, Zero has people actually reacting and coming to grips with what is happening in their lives.

The most you can say about 7 was they were fighting some space monster... but their core beliefs, their motivations are never challenged, other then they all come around to Basra's War is Bad mantra. And yes, I understand that this was a central theme of SDF:M, but 7 does it in such a childish and black and white way. There's none of the moral ambiguity, the personal struggle that was seen in SDF:M that makes for good drama.

I'm really digging the city screenshot, and the fleet screenshot. The character design I've got mixed feelings on, but it's one partial picture nothing to come to any judgements on other than an initial ho-hum feeling towards the style. Of course, I've not much cared for a character design style in Macross except for when Mikimoto was doing them. And even then, I'm not always a fan of the actual costume design. We'll see.

I'm not digging the CG Valkyrie. Again, just one less than stellar screenshot to begin with, so nothing to rush to any judgements over, but it seems to fall somewhere between a low point such as Aquarion, and a high point such as the better CG in M0. Still in the "I'd rather see them hand drawn" category. However, if the character animation is decent, and the backgrounds all nice and detailed and good looking, and the designs themselves are solid, I'll be happy.

Overall I'm liking what I'm seeing. Here's hoping there's an actual video for us all to see sooner rather than later.

Of course, I'm heading to bed now, and might not have any time at all to check for updates between when I wake and when I run out the door to hop on an 11-hour train ride to visit family, so I might not even be able to check the forum until tomorrow night sometime. We'll see. Man, the anticipation. Can't wait.

Yup yup.. I love the interior san francisco inspired city shots. And I find myself enjoying the look of the animation. It does have a macross 7 feel, in the choice of colors and lighting. Which I don't mind, I just appreciate that it seems to have a much higher production value.

And the CG valk does look... meh. It's hard to really get a feel of the design yet, but I'll wait and see.

How do you know that? Macross 7 had beautiful opening animation in parts. The actual series animation for Macross Frontier could look just as cheap as Macross 7 in-series mecha animation.

That is the poorest possible picture that could have been taken of the new Valkyrie, with the exception of the rear side of that exact frame :)

I like some of the details on the Valkyrie (especially the VF-5000-esque torso), but YET AGAIN, this is so damn little that I can't say one way or the other until I see more. Damn, this is a killer. I'd almost prefer to have nothing than these scraps.

Those colony ships look cool. That sure is a different design from the old egg-like New Macross Class Ships.

which would be the reason why I used the word "seems."

ahahaha!! you have to give Kawamori some credit for, Macross is nothing like Gundam, since Gundam has been remade like 60 times already, at least Kawamori throws us something we could never see a mile coming

that valk looks a lot like the doodles shown in his sketches... it seems to be carrying a gunpod so we might still get the cool vrrrrrrrrrrooooommmm sound

Those look like tourists subs out of Disneyland.....

and that valk.... looks...... gundam-ish!!!!! Oh, my.... next pic we'll get a revamped version of the tittied valk

I wash I was wrong

I'm really interested to see the design of the colony ship.

I think those are the colony ships. Possibly a much larger fleet than say the Macross 7 fleet. Then again, they might be dropping tackier designs like the Einstein, and instead have a group of smaller colony city/agriculture ships specializing in specific things. One of those ships might have a city specializing in research and design, while the next one is full of farms and fields growing food. Then a military fleet along with them for escort.

Guess Kawamori loves cable cars...

The VF definitely retains that VF-5000-look from the production drawings.

The colony reminds me of the Gundam space colonies but with a more Macross-feel. Where in M7, we saw different shapes, we see all identical shapes here.

I would still prefer a video.

Pulled these pics off 2ch:

These were apparently taken from the event.

Some words are cut off, but I'm pretty certain this should say "銀河歌姫来艦" (The Galaxy Songtress/Diva Comes Aboard). Probably debatable whether the green-haired girl is a fan (the blonde girl in the back being the singer) or the singer.

The girl with green hair is wearing a China dress beneath that apron...

"A love story intertwining love, friendship, and a planet's destiny"

Valk image. Some posters on 2ch thinks this looks more like some sort of VF-1 variant tailored to the singer. (In which case, I think it would make more sense if this were some VF-5000 variant or later model)

This new Valkyrie has features which appear to be similar to the VF-19 and VF-5000. Looks like the paint scheme is white, blue and red. Angel Birds? Not likely though...

The fleet

The ships of the fleet reminds me of the Akusho Area docking bay island of the Macross 7: akusho_area_docking_bay_island.gif

With only 1 pic to rely on, it's really hard to judge the look of the new VF.

From what I can remember from the video is. Pilot uniforms resemble DYRL uniforms and helmets white with the yellow and black shoulders. There was a quick shot in the video that resembled the Megaroad launch scene form flashback, and it was a ship that looked similar to the Megaroad or could just be the Megaroad. The Valk fighting is back to fast anime style not the more realistic effect done on Mac Zero. The characters are more like something you would see in the new anime shows bright colors not alot of detail in character hair. Very hard to make out the enemy but I sure I saw large tentacles on screen.

Japan has plenty of cable cars. Maybe it's just to make the series more realistic for the target audience (Japanese)?

Or it's indicative of the population size and mass transportation needs of the colony vessels? And/or it's a stylistic statement, as the colony vessel in Macross 7 had subways...

perhaps the new fleet is entirely composed of smaller vessels, that minimize the risk to a large chunk of the population. In this theory, the effects of the events of Macross 7 are clearly evident, giving the strongest support to this series being a continuation of the Macross story, and not a reset.

Oh yeah that shot of the cable car was the last shot of the footage shown. The pic in the forums is as the cable car is pulling out of the station and the camera moves up but before it moves up that white post on the bottom of the screen had a sign that said Shibuya.

So, I guess these are good news...except for the tentacles. I don`t know why but I wouldn`t mind space monsters though; like something `a la Gunbuster...

Tentacled Space Monsters™ could be cool. I'm remembering the Delzag in Megazone23. The Space 1999 episode 'Dragon's Domain' had a Tentacled Space Monster™- very Cthulhu Mythos.

Bring on the Tentacled Space Monsters™.

So as a plot device, only females can pilot the new valks and have to sit in the cockpit naked? :D

That would be brilliant. I love the Megaroad design, would be great to see it. That would mean the fleet may be some 50 years old. Very interesting.

From the pic of the new VF previously posted, my comments are as follows: -

  • It has an angled chestplate in Battroid mode ala VF-5000 and VF-17.
  • The rear half of the gunpod visible in the pic, looks fairly traditional, i.e like a GU-11.
  • The right hand could possible be a tri-claw, rather than a normal hand (the pic is not really clear enough to tell).
  • The shoulder mechanism looks like it could have a similar transformation to the shoulders on the VF-11.
  • Some type of blade or fin (possibly folded tail fin?) is visible on the right forearm. Or perhaps it is the wing assembly connected to the back and is actually behind the forearm.
  • Possibly an officer or aces model. A head laser or antenna is shown on the right side of the head, It is likely that there is one on the left side as well.
  • Transformation looks fairly standard, possibly a combination of VF-1, VF-5000 and VF-11?
  • Cockpit and nose probably folds under the chest in Battroi mode, rather than having the nose cone between the Battroids legs ala VF-1, VF-0, VF-11 etc.
  • Not keen on the color scheme, although with the lighting in the pic it is difficult to tell.

Although it's difficult to tell anything conclusive from the one picture, I'm betting those new 'Frontier Class' colony ships are huge, probably dwarfing City 7.

It wouldn't surprise me if they are close in size UC era Gundam colonies, well lengthwise anyway, if not diameter. I guess as they only have one landmass, they would be like UC colonies cut in half lengthwise.

Ah, Frontier Class, I missed that earlier. I would have liked an old Megaroad still out there looking for settle.

Let me clarify myself, he must like cable cars from San Francisco, CA, USA. Cuz that would be the 2nd time he's used them.

If it's Macross meets Legend of the Overfiend, keep the guro out of it please. :p Almost blew chunks when I saw a clip from Urotsukidoji. Tentacles I can handle, but not guro.

The head of the new valk reminds me of one of the Patlabor heads.
