JsARCLIGHT Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 I'm torn between getting the HD DVD or the Blu Ray. If they both have the same picture and audio quality then I'll get the BD version. Quote
Vermillion21 Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 It'll be the regular DVD version for me ... I'm waiting to see who "wins" the new DVD format war ... Quote
bsu legato Posted December 18, 2007 Author Posted December 18, 2007 Only a few hours to go (unless you favorite e-tailer shipped it early). There's an awesome writeup of the 5-disc set on The Digital Bits. I think I'm going to stay up all night watching this stuff and call in sick on wednesday. Quote
David Hingtgen Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I still have neither HD-DVD nor Blu-Ray, but I plan to pick up an HD copy. Just have to decide which... Quote
Hikuro Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Well it's on my want list for christmas, so we'll see how things go...this might be my christmas gift to myself for the metal case version.....I just hope I"m able to find it in time since I don't get paid until thursday. Quote
eugimon Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 getting mine this week. Opted for the HD-DVD set sans metal case. Quote
Duke Togo Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I'm getting the case, standard DVD. I'm not sold on HD or Blu yet, they seem like Laserdisc to me. Should be shipping tomorrow from Amazon, but they have a habit of shipping stuff ahead of time (and not telling you), and you get your ship notice (and package) on the release date. Quote
Mr March Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I'm getting the case, standard DVD. I'm not sold on HD or Blu yet, they seem like Laserdisc to me. Ditto. I want that 5-disc case version on DVD. I haven't made the HD leap yet and don't have an AV system to seize advantage of HD anyway. Quote
Dangard Ace Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 BluRay boxset for me. I want the attache case with the spinner. Quote
EXO Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I guess we're all on the same boat... A friend has been hinting at me that I'm going to get this, but she's trying to fish whether I'll go blu-ray or HD-DVD... I'm leaning towards blu-ray. I want to wait but I also want this for Xmas... How about we all go blu-ray and push the issue? lol. Quote
Keith Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Got mine last thursday. I went for the 4 disc DVD, and I'm quite happy with it. I haven't watched through any of the extra's yet, but the movie disc is quite beautiful. It's crazy how well this film continues to hold up. I do wish that the work print wasn't a box + excess exclusive though. Quote
David Hingtgen Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Keith---the Blu-Ray version is available to get the Work Print without the box/case, and only 5 bucks more than the 4-disc DVD version. IMHO you probably should have snagged that version if you have a PS3. Only the normal DVD requires you to buy the uber-case version to get the work print. Quote

GobotFool Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 getting mine this week. Opted for the HD-DVD set sans metal case. I had a chance to see one today, the case isn't metal, its plastic. oh well. Quote
JsARCLIGHT Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I'm watching my Blu Ray set on Amazon like a hawk... it hasn't shipped yet. Then again Amazon just lost a package of mine recently so here's hoping this one gets through on the first attempt. Quote
Mr March Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 How about we all go blu-ray and push the issue? lol. I'd love to, but I just don't have the money right now. There's really no point owning an HD player and disks if I'm using a stereo CRT television. Besides, blu-ray is the superior format, so we all know it's going to fail Quote
Duke Togo Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Mine has been sitting on "Shipping Soon" since yesterday. Quote
Mr March Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Yeah, there's no way I'm ordering anything now until after Christmas. You're just asking for trouble Quote
JsARCLIGHT Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I'm more than happy to wait... I just don't want my set going missing like my last order. Amazon is good about sending out replacements, but it really bums you out to watch your tracking info go from "in transit" to "exception" to "contact shipper". Quote
Duke Togo Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Yeah, there's no way I'm ordering anything now until after Christmas. You're just asking for trouble Oh, I'll have it by Thursday. Amazon is pretty good with this stuff. Its most likely already shipped. Quote
Duke Togo Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Finally got my shipping notice, it'll be here tomorrow. Quote
JsARCLIGHT Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 High Def Digest just gave all versions of Blade Runner on Blu Ray and HD DVD five out of five stars for nearly everything and have rated it a must own. I think I just got wood. Quote
Duke Togo Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 The Holy Grail of DVD released, for sure. Alot of people have been waiting for this for a very long time. Quote
Mr March Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Damn right. It's about time this classic was given classic treatment. Quote
Alpha OTS Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 As a science fiction movie nerd, this is what I should have bought myself for Christmas..... Instead, I just spent $70 on standard DVD Toho films..... Yes, I await the barbs. Eventually I'll get this. Quote
promethuem5 Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I am sooooo befuddled by everyone's excitement over this release... I saw Blade Runner a few years ago (version w/ the Unicorn at the end I think...) and I thought it was rubbish. It was such a boring and stupid film, and the whole thing is pitch-black so you can't see anything... about the only thing I enjoyed was all the model-work for the vehicles and city shots, and that's only bc/ I've actually seen the main building model in person... Quote
Duke Togo Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Maybe the most respected science fiction movie ever made. Most of the anime we all watch was heavily influenced by it. Quote

Blu-ray or HD-DVD? lol. I'ts probably beyond you, so I wouldn't even worry about it... go watch your Fantastic Four... I'm sure that wouldnt bore you. Quote
promethuem5 Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Haha, wow... not what I expected back I have no problem with classics and such, so don't mark me as an action buff who doesn't watch stuff for the plot... it's just this one film I can't wrap my head around... I've tried and tried and simply cannot see the amazingness in it... Quote
Mr March Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Blade Runner is not really an accessible film. It works primarily on the strength of the visuals and the subtext. Blade Runner is also notable for the twist of protagonist/antagonist characterizations. The protagonist, Deckard, is nearly devoid of emotion and quite cold while Batty is an emotional and complex being yet plays the antagonist. Lastly, it's also known for creating a very real vision of a fictional world with a visual design so detailed and immersive it looks more realistic than most science fiction constructs that benefit from all the modern special effects technology. Much like Nolan's "Memento" or Kubrick's "2001" you really have to pay attention to what's going on in order to really get a lot out of it. The film is deliberately paced and almost meditative, which for some viewers is just a pretentious, slow or boring way to tell a story. If you rely upon the action sequences and dialog to carry the show, you're missing the other layers of the film completely and end up bored with a film that feels longer than it is. Quote
David Hingtgen Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Personally I never really "got" the story either, it's more of a visual thing. To rephrase your comment---literally, SEE the amazingness. Look at the world of Blade Runner. That's mainly what I get out of it. Visual style. Quote
promethuem5 Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 See, that's where I still get miffed... I'm all for the noir style an all, but when I watched the film, there were large sequences where I couldn't see a THING bc/ all the shots were so dark... Quote
Duke Togo Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Its like A1 not liking Gurren Lagann... for the life of me I don't get it, and I just have to accept there are some things in life I'll never understand. All I can hope for is that someday this film will click for you. Quote

I'm all for the noir style an all, but when I watched the film, there were large sequences where I couldn't see a THING bc/ all the shots were so dark... This probably has more to do with the copy you were watching and what you were watching it on. Quote
Uxi Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I definitely think it's overrated. That said, it's got some good sci fi at it's core. Too many of it's premises are dated now, though... Especially the whole Japanese-Corporate-run-future thing. Quote
