Hi guys,

was just wondering if model kits made out of vinyl use our regular hobby acrylic paints or if there were other paints that needed to be used. i only ask cause i saw some spray paint at home depot which said it was for vinyl so it got me thinking. thanks

The method I use is to coat it in a car body paint usually mat black for dark colours or mat white for light and just air brush away.

Once the car paint is on it works as a basecoat and protector against any other paints. The great thing is you can get the car paint in a rattle can and this makes it quick, cheap and easy to use as a primer.

Just remember to give the parts agood wash to remove all the release agent from the casting, as this really messes up your day if you dont, trust me on that one.

Sweet!!! Thanks guys, that answered a lot of what i need to cover....i have an airbrush so that will be a big help in itself. Just wondering what would you use to remove paint on a vinyl kit should i screw up somehow,....i'd hate to accidentally melt the kit while trying to get the paint off. thanks

Maybe if it was a soft vinyl kit...stick to acrylics..water solubels. You can mix paints only after the base coat is really really dry..otherwise it can start to wrinckle and crack the paint..i once used a spray can for primer then tried to go over it with acrylics..the acrylic paint dried almost imedetely while the base coat was still wet resulting in mess....
