According to some friends of mine over at Zombie Squad pointed out, there was more than one monster. Apparently pics on one of the viral websites linked to the movie show the military fighting one of them offshore. That explains why there was such a rapid response by the Army to these things taking a hunk out of New York. Supposedly, it starts at an oil rig out in the Atlantic. The Navy gets initially involved before calling the Air Force to send F-22s and A-10s. Maybe the sequel will include the story of how exactly these things came to attack New York.

And yeah..I hate rich people who live off mommy and daddy's hard earned success.

But...none of that is actually in the movie. Other than Beth's dad's apartment in the very, very beginning there isn't even any real reference to their parents, or what any of them other than Rob actually do for a living. I think you're making an awfully big assumption based on very very little. But then you post this

And me being a soldier, I would have shot that fool with the camera and any screaming dumba$$ civilian who got in my way of killing that monster or its fleas.

...and I know there's no real point in trying to engage you in any sort of adult conversation. Enjoy your crappy bootleg.

Baloney!!! I'm glad I saw a bootleg copy of this than pay $10+ for this crap. Make it a Blockbuster or Hollywood video wait. It's not worth seeing in the theater. I'd rather go see American Gangster in the theater 10x over than this crap.

And me being a soldier, I would have shot that fool with the camera and any screaming dumba$$ civilian who got in my way of killing that monster or its fleas. Call it: collateral damage or friendly fire.

Nice... an American soldier witho no regards to life, especially American citizens... and someone who buys illegal copies of movies. So patriotic, so uncriminal. Your argument not only reveals you as a tool, but a simpleton as well.

Am I the only one who thinks the military responded quite mildly to the threat? Sure, they had some tanks and soldiers trying to machine gun the monster, but I was expecting like 20 Apaches around that thing like hornets. F-22's, Napalm... the works...

They should have called that special ops team from Transformers :p

Well, you have to figure a metered response operating in a variable environment alongside a large scale civilian evacuation. You can't just fly in hundreds of units and blow the crap out of an area that millions of your own people are in. Plus you have the unknown element of the monster, the general chaos and confusion of an unexpected attack from beyond and the general logistics involved of mobilizing a large combat force into an area where they are not normally available. I think the movie was a pretty good facsimile of the first hours of what a real tactical response to a monster would be like.

Going to probably see the movie later this week, I'm hoping the camera isn't as shaky as Blair Witch. Would the movie have been more tolerable if the hand held camera had image stabilization or something, would that have minimized the shakiness?

besides, if 2 apaches and dozens of hellfires had no effect at all, what's the point of dozens of apaches and hundreds of hellfires? Besides, the carpet bombed the thing with no effect...

Oh yeah...you got chaos going on, but you got "average joe" filming everything like that camcorder was clued to his face *lol* Did he even drop that camera even once in this make believe crap? In real life, I would have slapped that fool.

Ummm, in the movie its actually referenced that Rob is the vice president of a company. I have no idea what any of the the other characters did for a living but I really don't see where you got the impression that these people were parasites other than the fact that they were well dressed.

And Hud dropped the camera on plenty of ocassions. You often see him running back to grab the camera. I guess if you had to slap him around for anything it would be for being an idiot and running back in the middle of a monster attack to grab a dumb camera.

Were you not around during 911? Where the frakk was the military that day? They couldnt even get jets to NY. What about the gov't response to New Orleans? I'm not about to debate political crap, but I'm just citing those 2 actual events as real life resonses to emergency. Please don't get all political on me...

As I was saying... logistics. Our military is spread out over the entire country and the best an individual state can muster in a disaster situation is a few platoons of soldiers, some light armor and perhaps a few helicopters and some air national guard planes. And all of that stuff alone takes time to execute and mobilize.

I can believe the angle that the government knew the monster was coming / already there and had pre-deployed some units but the second the thing made landfall they had to up the ante... and upping the ante militarily takes time.

Anyone see this?

Sounds like it could be cool.

Honestly, I'm surprised this sort of stuff hasn't turned up sooner. I'd have expected the first series of a toyline to show up on Toys R Us and Target shelves in early Dec., just in time for Christmas, given Hollywood's much more merchandising-driven approach to marketing their crap these days.

P.S. Have the 1st series Rambo toys shown up at Toys R Us yet? LOL, "...new hyper-action Rambo figures! featuring accessory machete, knife, bow-and-arrow, assault rifle, kung-fu grip, and ultra real middle-age paunch!" <_<

If only the Cloverfield monster weren't so expensive. It'd be fun to play "Cloverfield vs. Transformers"* on my desk.

*Did I mention I turn 28 in two weeks?

Really? I was so bored out of my mind and probably fell asleep during the middle of the film that I didn't even notice the camera falling. God, this movie sucked. They should have stuck to traditional filming with some camcorder scene ala Blair Witch Project.....not the freaking entire film I should have taken Dramamine too, to stop my dizziness. I hate reality tv and now they're sticking that crap in the big screen.

they were well dressed because they went to a party. People tend to dress up for those things. And only Beth is shown to have come from any money. The apartment at the beginning of the movie doesn't seem upscale to me.. unless rundown stairs and walls covered with grafitti are common in the nicer apartment buildings in manhattan.

Heck ya...all you need is 2-3 AC-130 Spectres up there AIMING for the brain of the monster's head and that thing is finish.

I didn't buy....I watched it on a COMMUNIST CHINESE COMPUTER SERVER online. And for the record, I don't give a rat's ass about Hollywood and their annual crap of bs movies. When I buy DVD's , I get my money's worth. Any legal matters taken, will be on that site.....in China. Kinda like people watching on youtube.

Two, I was speaking hypothetically if I was in that situation with ordinary citizens like....you. In real life, who knows??

Three, I couldn't care less what you think. Who are you??? I bet you(99% of all you people in here) download all kinds of crap in that computer of yours (porn, mp3s, and movies).

Just STFU and stop being a douchebag. Everytime you post you mention that you're in the military. Yeah we get it. I'm guessing your superiors are pretty embarrased of that. A soldier talking about shooting innocent civilians even hypothetically is as funny as an idiot pointing a loaded gun.

Two, I know you're a freakin douchebag that we banned a while back, so keep acting like one and I'll be only happy to do it again. The more you try to sound smart the more you show what type of simpleton you really are.

Rescue people? BORING.

I guarantee if there was a 300ft monster stomping New Orleans we would have seen a better response...

Is not that the military was not available... There was just nothing to shoot at :)

I'm going to try not to be political, but talk militarily.

The military isn't some godlike service ready to have any sort of hardware on site with in hours. that's not how it works.

To site the examples given above, in New Orliens it's not like the military base down the road was ready to go; all the emergency crews near the hurricane site GOT HIT BY THE SAME HURRICANE, they had to get equiptment from around the country into an UTTERLY DEVESTATED part of the southern coast. Not just one city. IIRC there was major military responce with in the week of the storm hitting. And let me sum up just a few of the reasons for a "long" response time. keep in mind that the US Armed forces, while trianed somewhat to aid disaster victims, ARN'T a large scale fire department. Most soldiers have humvees with machine guns, m16's or m14 rifels and combat medical training. In the words of some fictional military medic "I mostly patch holes, i'm not trained for this." Sure you could dump guns and ammo out of "A" humvee and drive to the rescue, but when it's 10,000 humvee's that becomes a lot of un attended machineguns and ammo, also how are you going to fuel the gass guzzlers? with diesel stations 10 feet underwater? All this required planning and mobilization. And it's not like the entire country was sitting around on a hair trigger to go respond to a disaster of that scale, USUALLY local responce is enough.

I could go on and on, in short...

If you're going to blame ANYONE for a slow response it should NOT BE THE MILITARY. That be like blameing the SWAT team because an ambulance didn't snow up on time.

Now to get back on topic. I think the Military response in Cloverfield was impressive almost to the point of unbeleivability. True, soldiers and Humvee's could easily be put on target quickly, but to think they'd have multible Abrams tanks on target with in less than 7 hours is a pretty impressive responce time. I don't know how many Armored Divisions they keep in manhatten, but i'm sure it's not many *btw thats sarcasm i'm sure there are no armord divisions on the island.

True there could have been Cobra's on hand relatively quickly IF there was a marine base nearby, with choppers armed fueled and on scramble readyness. In most cases I'd imagine most military killing vehicles in the US are kept an hour or two of prep time from actual combat readyness. Arming live weapons, doing diagnostics, fueling, pre flight and pre combat system checks all takes time. And would take longer for a group not on scramble alter, ie: pilots are at home sleeping, not at the air strip in flight suits.

It's also very possible that Choppers were on hand early on and we simply missed it. The military responce in the movie is clearly not a major plot point until day break the next day, and then if you notice, the heros seem to lay low most of the day and dont' set out untill dusk the next day (which makes me think the 7 hours quoted by the Rob is not quite accurate)

I agree, it's not fair that Transformers got an AC-130 and cloverfield didn't, though to be fair, unless Hud had been told while the camera was rolling that a gunship was on station, how would WE know ? And while the f-18's were doing bombing runs on the monster, you know any attack choppers in the area would have bugged out. Do they keep AC-130's armed and ready to fight with in 7 hours of New York city?

I think the military was well represented here.

I was impressed with the response... but I was curious, where's the closest army-base to NYC that has deployable Abrams? I'm from Upstate, so I have no idea what's down there...

My point exactly. If it was LA i know there could have been tanks from Camp Pendelton in a few hours, and Cobra's nearly instantly, if a carrier was in port in San Diego, naval planes could have been on hand relatively quickly too, if most of the crew wasn't on shore leave. I'm just skeptical of how much military hardware is kept ready to fight on or near american soil.

I know in 9/11 is was quite a while before military planes were in the skys, and the first on scene were unarmed f-18's that had been on training missions. I think it was an hour or two before armed fighters were on target.

Loved the movie, hated the camera work. 3 people were sickened, had to leave the film in the theatre i was in alone. I am so sick if that lame shaky cam. I pray this is the one that teaches them to stop using it, this movie would have been way, way, way better if they had used the shaky cam only in a half dozen or so specific scenes in short bursts. It would not have detracted from the idea that Hud was carrying the camera if it was steady most of teh time however, not being able to keep up with what was going on all the time, well it really pulled me out of the story. I liked it but won't watch the movie again. If they used a steady cam I would have bought the film on DVD or Blu-Ray and watched it repeatedly.

I saw it with a friend on Friday night. He actually threw up after the film. Though I can have motion sickness issues at times, I was perfectly fine during the movie.

As for my opinion about it, doing the whole movie from solely the perspective of the camcorder was definitely unique and in a way was kind of like 24 in that your witnessing things in real time (sort of). But beyond that, I didn't feel much of a connection to the characters, the monster should have been given more screen time (obviously very hard to do since the whole movie was done from just that one perspective), and the ending was very unfulfilling, in fact I heard a number of people in the theater voiced their disatisifcation at the ending of the movie and numerous others waited around through out the credits hoping some Easter Egg was at the end to help justify them sitting through this whole film.

Yeah that would have been the other thing about the movie that the deployment of ground and air forces on New York was that rapid.

If a Bradley's main gun couldn't hack it against the monster I doubt an Apache would do much good, and if I remember correctly they mentioned using Hornets to attack the monster, plus you don't really want to napalm an area that Civvies are still evacuating from. ^_^
