As you all know Rick Sternbach was the senior illustrator/technical advisor in most of the Star Trek tv shows (as well as movies). Here's some interesting info that just made my day.

The fun thing about the Stargazer is that Greg Jein used a larger scale

Macross kit for some of the parts required for the 4-footer shooting

miniature; I used a smaller scale kit for the desktop model in Picard's

ready room. Greg had to scratchbuild the other anime bits, course, but it

was nice to be able to tell him which Macross parts were used. In fact,

another Valkyrie kit came in handy when Captain Garrett was killed aboard

the Enterprise-C; the thing sticking out of her head was a VF-1 wing.

I dont recall the *exact* Orguss and Gundam kits I canibalized, but I do

recall that the Gundam kit was molded in lime green and black, and had

some kind of octopus tentacles. The Crusher Joe "Galleon" came in a tiny

cardboard box and was part of a series along with the fighters.

To be honest, it's old news. I first read about this about 10 years ago. There's apparently plenty of in-jokes on the okudograms and the signs on the doors and over the patients in sick bay - mind you, they're next to impossible to read unless you are actually on the set.

Aside from the mentions in the compendium:

consider for a moment the name of the sister-ship of the Enterprise: the Yamato. Rick Sternbach is an anime fan amongst fans, and I miss his column in the first year of Animerica.

Actually there are several anime references in ST:TNG.

Mostly as homages back to the anime shows that would flatter Star Trek with cameo bits.

In the episode "The Icarus Factor" where Riker Sr. and Jr. battle each other in a ficticious Japanese game of "Anbo-jyutsu", there several of the katakana characters are actually the names "Lum", "Ataru", "Kei" and "Yuri".

Both Urusei Yatsura & Dirty Pair (as well as others) often had cameo bits referencing TOS of Star Trek .

The name of the ST:TNG episode in question is "Yesterday's Enterprise."

And yes, I'm a Trekkie. :D
